Death Is Not The End
St. Johns United Church of Christ
St. Johns is a community of faith centered in Jesus Christ, seeking guidance and direction through the Holy Spirit, and demonstrating Gods love to all people in words and deeds.
Over the past three months, we have reflected how the image of the door may be viewed as an invitation to deepen our faith. We have considered what its like to stand at a door and knock, what its like to hear someone knocking at a door, and weve considered the door of our heart, the door through which we access the divine. It is my prayer that one or more of these spiritual exercises or the Lenten Spiritual Practices included in our Lenten worship bulletins have been helpful in deepening your relationship with God and your faith. Next on our liturgical journey is Holy Week, April 1 7. Time for a dramatic shift. Holy Week puts us in the thick of things, so to speak. Holy Week takes us to a place where many of us are not comfortable. Specifically Im thinking of Good Friday and Jesus death and burial. Good Friday is the day when the grave was closed. Depending upon our work or the size of our family or the age of our friends, we may only visit fresh graves a few times in our lives. A grave can feel like the end or the last scene to be acted out in a persons earthly life. Going to an open grave is the last of our death rituals, following last illness, last visits, last rites, last breath, last arrangements, notification calls, the last (funeral) worship service, the procession to the grave, the committal service and the last words: Almighty God, in whose eternal care are all your people, we commit our sister/ brother to her/his final resting place, earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust For some people, those last words stick in their heads and hearts. Its finally over. (S)he is really gone. I feel so alone. But these are not the last words of a people of faith. We believe rather in the empty tomb. We believe in the empty grave. We are a resurrection people. We know that death is not the end, but a new beginning. We know that death does not have the last word. And so we proclaim our faith: Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O death where is your sting? Thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ! We come on Easter morn not to visit a sealed up tomb or a covered over grave site. We come on Easter to give thanks to God that through Jesus Christ, the grave is not the end. The stone has been rolled away. The grave is empty. The spirit lives on. We come in confident and certain hope of the resurrection to eternal life through Jesus Christ, firstborn from the dead. Because he lives, we can face tomorrow. Happy Easter, one and all.

Welcome Our New Members
At the church council meeting on March 12th, we approved a recommendation from the Congregation Life Committee for new members. Three of those members were introduced to the congregation on March 25th by their mentors. (See their information below.) Please join us in welcoming these individuals with open arms. Also joining St. Johns is Denise Martin who will be introduced to the congregation at a later date.
Congregational Meeting
A brief meeting of the congregation was held on Sunday, March 18th during the worship service to elect Bert Brown as a trustee to fill a vacancy left by the resignation of Ken Westnedge. Bert was unanimously elected and we thank him for his commitment and service to our church family. The semi-annual meeting of the congregation will be held on Sunday, May 13th during the worship service. The primary purpose of the meeting is the election of church officers. The nominating committee recommendations will be listed in the May Messenger and on the bulletin board outside Pastor Jons office. As a regular meeting of the congregation, any business may be raised. If you wish to introduce any business, please contact Teresa Jolles, Church Council President, before the meeting.

Celebrate the End of our Program Year May 19th 4-8 pm
Launch Sunday brings us back together in September as we kick off our church program year. The Picnic is our celebration at the end of the program year and a time to be together for fun and fellowship before we all take needed breaks in the summer. We enjoyed the location at Sunday Park in Brandermill last year. The picnic pavilion at Sunday Park is in a cool wooded area on the Swift Creek Reservoir. Sunday Park is located near the Brandermill Church at 4500 Millridge Parkway. Maps will be available in the parlor later. We ask each person to bring a side dish or dessert. The Congregational Life committee will provide the meat and drinks. We plan to reserve a pontoon boat to enjoy the reservoir. We will have games, face painting, and a surprise guest!! So put this on your calendar now and plan to be there!!

Adult Education: Pondering Jesus Parables
One of Jesus favorite ways to teach was to tell parables: stories that take common experiences and turn them upside down, disrupting peoples assumptions about what is right and good. Come wrestle with these puzzling stories each Sunday beginning April 22, 9:45-10:45 a.m. in the Guild Room who knows, they might turn your life upside down in just the right way!
April Roundtable: Fitting the Bible into Everyday Life
For many contemporary Christians, Bible reading is a Sunday activity or something we do in a crisis rather than a regular pastime. Fitting an ancient text into daily life doesnt come naturally. Does reading the Bible frequently have value in the 21st century, or is a weekly worship dose of scripture enough to keep us going? Come explore this timely question and a variety of Bible reading ideas on Sunday, April 15, 9:45-10:45 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. All ages welcome!
Confirmation
St. Johns Confirmation Class of 2012 (Hank Allen, James Cook, Trey Lyle, Savannah Quick and Lydia Woods) are in the final weeks of their preparation for Confirmation, to be celebrated Sunday, May 20th. In March, the class attended Shabbat services at Jewish Reformed Congregation Or Ami, led by Rabbi Ben Roemer (Jerry Simonoff and Sharon Machrones other place of worship). On April 27 28, the Confirmation Class and their parents will be on a Capstone Retreat at Richmond Hill to select scripture and prayers for their May 20th service of worship and to prepare their confirmation statements. We also wish to thank their adult mentors who have been spiritual guides for the past two years: Mark Atkinson (Hank), Richard Bighinatti (Trey), Sharon Machrone (Lydia), Jeff Michel (James), and Emilye Pittman (Savannah).
Attention All Families With Children under age 17 (Other interested adults and children are welcome, too!)
Pastor Party Saturday, March 31, 3:30 5:30 pm This is a chance for the children to get to know the pastor better. Adults are encouraged to stay and do the activities with the children. Our topic is Moses. We will pay special attention to the Passover part of the 10 plagues. The Jewish community celebrates the escape from slavery with the Passover meal, called a Seder. We will be having a Passover meal on Palm Sunday during church school. Palm Sunday Sunday, April 1, 9:30 am Outside parade with other churches (and donkey). Stop at St. Johns to pick up your palm branch and then go across the street to First English Lutheran church. FYI : goodies will be available in the parlor after the parade. 10:45 am All children and youth gather in the Parlor to get ready for Palm Sunday Worship. They will lead the choir into the sanctuary with palm branches raised high. 11:20 am Passover Meal (Seder) will be served in the Guild Room in the basement. Adults are encouraged to attend. Please RSVP so we can have the table set up for everyone.

Area Congregations Together in Service (ACTS) is a Greater Richmond interfaith mission providing support and resources during periods of financial crisis to prevent homelessness. ACTS vision is to be the premiere faithbased organization working to prevent homelessness in the Greater Richmond Area, fostering a community that values and cares for persons in crisis. ACTS takes a proactive stance by financially assisting people, regardless of their faith belief, who are in imminent danger of losing their stable housing. ACTS finds this to be the most cost effective and compassionate manner in dealing with a desperate situation. Richmond is currently experiencing the longest wait for a bed in a shelternine weeks! The cost to shelter a mother and two children per month is $2,900. ACTS can keep a family stably housed for an average of $500. Homelessness becomes more expensive for municipalities and taxpayers paying more for health care, medical treatments and incarcerations. And, lastly and most importantly, the immeasurable cost of and consequence of the loss of dignity of a human being, neighbors in our community! Since ACTS began seeing clients in August 2006: 872 households have been financially assisted. 2,137 people have been positively affected 955 of those 2,137 people were under the age of 18 Over $600,000 has been expended on assisting people with rent, mortgage, utilities and a few other expenses that may arise
CARITAS Says Thank You
Dear St. Johns CARITAS Volunteers, I would to take this opportunity to thank all those members of St. Johns who volunteered their time to assist with the St Johns CARITAS mission from the end of January to the end of March. We served approximately 37 homeless women during this time each evening. We thank everyone for his or her donations to CARITAS in the purchase of necessary supplies (coffee/hot chocolate/lemonade/ sugar/cream/cups/stirrers/napkins/snacks). CARITAS is a very important mission for our church and our community. We appreciate your dedication and help to this outreach mission. Thank You! CARITAS Chairman Richard J Bighinatti
The key component of this effort involves developing dedicated relationships and financial support from congregations such as our very own, St. Johns UCC. Currently, there are 40+ other such partnerships with many different denominations. When clients are referred from partner congregations such as St. Johns, they are fully assessed by a case manager who determines the funding needed thereby reducing the burden on the staff of the congregation and offering the church a resource to give to people in need. Over the next three years ACTS has set goals of assisting 1,380 households. ACTS can only do that with your financial support. In addition to your monetary donations, ACTS gladly welcomes items such as the following: Personal Care Items, Paper Products, Cleaning Products, Childrens Items, Misc. Prior to the client leaving when the assessment is over, ACTS case manager gives each client a care bag consisting of the above items most of us take for granted. These bags always put a smile on a desperate persons face. Donated items may be left in the Parlor. Please see Billy Poarch, Executive Director of ACTS should you have any questions.
William Byrd
Dont forget that on the third Sunday of each month, we receive contributions of nonperishable food items for the William Byrd Food Bank. Ask for a shopping bag with a shopping list attached from a member of the Welcome Team when you come to worship, and then bring your offering on the third Sunday of each month.
One Great Hour of Sharing
The annual all church offering for disaster relief, One Great Hour of Sharing (OGHS), was received on Sunday, March 18th. To date we have received $1385. Thank you St. Johns!

Stewardship Message
Stewards of Our Relationship with One Another
Potomac Association Spring Meeting
The annual spring meeting of the Potomac Association of the United Church of Christ will be Saturday, April 21st at 9:00 AM at Greenbelt Community UCC (Greenbelt, MD). If you wish to attend this meeting, please contact Pastor Jon.
No one can serve two masters... You cannot serve God and wealth. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Matthew 6:24, 21 The Rev. Dr. Richard D. Weiss observes that being stewards in the household of God is intensely counter-cultural in significant ways. We live in a society where we are taught explicitly and implicitly that to be truly human is to be self-sufficient, independent, protective, competitive, acquisitive, accumulative, a consumer. If you pay money, you should get something. There is no limit to the satisfaction of our desires. Our spirit is nourished and our worth is measured by what we possess. What are the marks of this counter-culture, the Household of God? We are interdependent and collaborative we need each other, others need us. We share surplus so each has enough. In order for all to live, each limits accumulation. Money is just another resource to be allocated to ensure shalom. Our spirit is nourished by living up to who God made us to be. Our worth is given by God. Churches have a unique ministry opportunity to liberate members to order their financial life according to their faith values. Laura Dunham wisely notes in Graceful Living: Every choice we make to spend, save, or give has an impact, creating a ripple effect. How each of us decides to live matters.
