DOSS CCTV cameras featuring Sony EFFIO signal processors

The complete Doss line up of new CCTV cameras now feature Sony's new EFFIO* DSP and 960H CCD image sensor. This means a huge 700 TV lines, plus an array of cool features! The installers reading, might be thinking that it's going to involve them learning more, which is true, but the new series will also simplify the camera selection process and give us all a better end result!

A lower lux level is desirable, but in complete darkness, we'll need IR light. We specify the IR distance in the model number i.e. IN15PRO is 15m or a IN50PRO will be 50m.

Back to basics

Before discussing the new technology, let's consider the basics. You have a camera directed towards an image, like the stadium below. You'll choose an optical lens that matches the desired coverage. Behind the lens, the part of the camera receiving the image is called a CCD (or CMOS). Once the image is received by the CCD, it's converted into voltage, which in turn goes to a chip. The function of the chip is to convert that voltage into a digital signal. For that reason, the chip is called a Digital Signal Processor.

WDR and why pay more for it?

As mentioned earlier, WDR or Wide Dynamic Range is a key difference in the EFFIO chips. The EFFIO-E doesn't have WDR. The EFFIO-S has a half baked WDR. The EFFIO-P has real WDR. Here are some shots from the factory where the Doss Cameras are manufactured.

Applying the basics to the Doss cameras

When the image is first received, it will pass through a lens. The fixed lens in models like IN30 are made by Lan Zhou Xin Tai. The same lens is fitted to Samsung CCTV cameras. The Pro series cameras will be fitted with vari-focal (manually adjustable) lenses made by Dawon in Korea. From there, the image will be received by a Sony CCD. We selected the Sony Super HAD CCD II* (model ICX663AKA). The CCD chip is 1/3" in size - superior to the smaller 1/4" chips found in mass market retailers.

SENS - off SENS - on These images show that in certain situations, there's no impact, but in others, it's essential. Okay, so we have worked out the coverage, IR and conditions, but what type of camera is best?

The processor will be an EFFIO, which stands for Enhanced Features and Fine Image Processor. There are actually 3 different grades of EFFIO processor, from the standard EFFIO 'E' to the 'S' and finally, the premium 'P'. The major difference is the WDR feature, which copes with the extreme variations in lighting conditions. Based on testing, the DSP may make no difference, but in certain lighting conditions, it will be essential.

Dome or Integrated (bullet) Camera?

Selecting the camera

Step one would be determining what area we want to cover. All else constant, a better camera will cover a larger area as each camera will give us a more detailed image. If you have a better image, you can use digital zoom to extract the required information. Less cameras will save us on hardware like cabling, DVRs and power supplies. Less cameras will also save us on installation and monitoring times.

There's no clear answer, but we'd make a couple of generalisations. Dome cameras are more durable. Integrated cameras are easier to install. More powerful lenses and IR can be fitted to integrated cameras. Domes are less intrusive, so, aesthetically more pleasing, but less of a deterrent to offenders. Now we've chosen a camera, but is it a good investment? And isn't technology changing? The industry seems to talk about 2 new emerging technologies IP systems and HD-sDI We use IP technology for certain jobs. Given the right conditions, the quality is fantastic and it's very expandable. Unfortunately still, in terms of value, the vast majority of jobs utilise coaxial cabling to a recording device (DVR). This solution delivers great value for money and will suit anything from domestic or most medium sized commercial applications. For more professional jobs, the existing RG59 cabling can also be upgraded to HD-SDI. We have been shocked by the quality of the HD-SDI coaxial systems.

New technologies

Selecting the coverage will also be determined by the lens. With a lens at 9mm, you'll get around 40 degrees coverage. If you go down to around 4mm, the coverage will broaden to around 90 degrees. A handy way to check out the coverage is to use the M035 wrist watch. This will take a video feed from the camera and power the camera at the same time. Again, with the exception of the DOME30PRO which has a 4~9mm lens, the Pro series feature the Korean Dawon lenses with a full 2.8mm to 11mm coverage. This means that one camera should suit most situations. You'll see some camera brands with either 2.8mm to 11mm and others with 2.8mm to 12mm. In general, 2.8-11 is Korean and 2.8-12 is Chinese.

In the Dark

If we are operating at night, we'll need to rely on the Lux or IR features of a camera.

No lag and completely uncompressed 1080P resolution over a single RG59 coaxial run. HD-SDI has been used in the broadcast world for a long time. Now we have introduced this technology into the CCTV camera arena. Check out our first 2 models on page 4 to your left.

energizer ultimate Lithium Lithium batteries are light and offer massive capacity. They are mainly used to power cameras. Due to good volumes, we are able to offer the Energizer brand name at a price normally associated with generic supermarket brands. maxell Button Cells Maxell button cells continue to be manufactured in Japan and continue to be 'the brand' in button cell batteries.

Powerone (coming soon) We consider PowerOne to be the best in hearing aid batteries. PowerOne's German production facilities are the most up-to-date and largest in the world.

sanyo Sanyo ceased production of standard batteries to focus on rechargeable batteries.
