Cable Fault Current Calculation

The document contains calculations for determining the fault current capacity of copper tape used as insulation screening for various sized power cables. It describes using a formula to calculate the fault current based on parameters like the copper tape area, initial and final temperature, and provides sample calculations for copper tapes used in 3-core 300sqmm, 185sqmm, and 120sqmm cables showing the tape meets the requirement of carrying 200A for 1 second. A similar calculation is shown for a copper screen in a 1-core 240sqmm cable.

ANNEXURE I

Calculation for Fault current of Insulation screen i.e. Copper tape for Three core cable ( 6.35/11 kV ) 3C X 300 sqmm. Name of Customer : M/S. EIL INDIA LTD, BPCL.. P.O NO : 4145 Dt. 22/11/10.

The Formula used for Calculation of Short Ckt./ Fault Current :I 2 = K2 S2 log e Q1 + B T Q0 + B Where I = Fault current in Amps T = Duration of short circuit (fault current)in seconds K = Constant (226 for copper) S = Area of copper tape = 40 x 0.045= 1.8 sq.mm (Copper tapes of 40X0.045 ) Q1 = Final temperature of copper tape = 200 OC Q0 = Initial temperature of copper tape = 80 OC B = Reciprocal of the temperature co-efficient of resistance of the copper tape per OC at O 0C = 234.5 = Constant I2 = 2262 X 1.8 2 loge 200 + 234.5 1 80+234.5 I2 = 165486.24 X 0.323211868 I2 = 53487.11676 I = 53487.11676 I = 231.27 Amps for 1 seconds for each . Thus the requirement of CU tape to carry 200A for 1 Sec is met
