Ecumenism and Inter

Ecumenism refers to unity among Christian churches, seen in examples like a unity dinner celebrating 130 years of cooperation among churches in West Virginia. Interfaith dialogue involves respectful discussion of religious similarities and peace across faiths, such as a 2005 conference bringing together Jews, Christians and Muslims in Washington D.C. The Church of England disagrees on women bishops and same-sex marriage. The Catholic Church disagrees with stem cell research destroying embryos and artificial contraception, believing contraception prevents procreation contrary to God's will.

Ecumenism and inter-faith dialogue Ecumenism: a movement supporting unity among Christian churches/ denominations.

Examples of people from different Christian denominations working together: Wednesday 16th September: Unity dinner sponsored by the West Virginia council of churches. The West Virginia Council of churches, an ecumenical organisation that is celebrating 130 years if unity. Milton Area Christian Churches Working Together (MACCWT) is a cooperative organisation of churches working together in Milton in order to welcome Christian new comers as a result of the rapid residential growth of the area. CTED- Churches together in the Epping District.

Interfaith dialogue: meeting of qualified members of different faith in a formal setting to discuss similarities in religious practices and opinions. The purpose of this is to share/ expand a common view (e.g. peace is a common goal among all religions). Examples of interfaith conferences include: 20th February 2005- Washington D.C: A model gathering of Abrahamic faith between Judaism, Christianity and Islam. 25th February 2005- Midtown Tuscon: Second annual PeaceWalk held in Tuscon. 150 Jews and Muslims took part.

Two examples where the Church of England disagree: Women Bishops- The debate of whether women should be given the opportunity to be ordained as bishops has lingered within the Church of England since 1966. On November 21st 2012 however the Church of England general synod voted narrowly against the motion. The measure was passed by the synod's houses of bishops and clergy but was rejected by the House of Laity. The outgoing Archbishop of Canterbury opposed the final outcome and stated: Of course I hoped and prayed that this particular business would be at another stage before I left, and it is a personal sadness, a deep personal sadness that that is not the case. Furthermore, the Archbishops successor, Bishop Welby, also opposed the outcome of the vote and stated: "Very grim day, most of all for women priests and supporters, need to surround all with prayer & love and co-operate with our healing God." The final results were 44 for and 3 against with 2 abstentions in the House of Bishops, 148 for and 45 against in the House of Clergy, and 132 for and 74 against in the House of Laity. Same sex marriage- The Church of England stated that by giving civil ceremonies the status of marriage would "alter the intrinsic nature of marriage as the union of a man and a woman" Marriage should remain between a male and a female as it has done throughout history and must serve the basic biological concept of procreation. Gay marriage cannot endorse the concept of procreation and is therefore improper.

Two examples where the Catholic Church disagree:

Stem cell research- The Catholic Church bases its teachings on this issue around the concept that an embryo is a human being. Therefore they are against embryonic stem-cell research because it involves the destruction of human embryos. Pope John Paul II stated that embryonic stem-cell research shares the same outcomes as abortion and euthanasia in the fact that innocent life is being eliminated.

Artificial contraception- The Catholic Church follow Aquinas Natural Moral Law whereby God created humans with specific features, each with their own function to carry out. By using artificial contraception the body cannot procreate (against God will and therefore morally incorrect). Additionally because the Catholic Church believe a fertilised egg to be a living human being, and therefore contraception that would kill the fertilised egg is considered as murder (e.g. abortion). In 1986, Pope John Paul VI published Humanae Vitae (On Human Life). He believed that Catholics needed guidance on contraception and that Humanae Vitae would convey the importance of traditional teachings on the issue. Every marriage act must remain open to the transmission of life (Humanae Vitae).
