The document discusses calculating wind load coefficients (Cp) for a rectangular building with dimensions of 45m x 15m and a roof angle of 10 degrees, based on several wind direction cases. It provides the Cp values for columns on each face and halves of the roof for 8 cases considering wind from each face with Cpi of ±0.5, according to IS875 Part 3. The Cp values indicate whether the wind force is toward or away from the building.

Dear Sirs, Let us consider a rectangular building/shed with size in plan 45mx15m and eaves height is 5m. Let the angle of the roof be 10 degrees. In both tables 4 and 5 of IS875 Part 3, wind on the long side is considered as theta=0. Hence, sides A and B are 45m, C and D are 15m. Let us consider Cpi is + or - 0.5 L=45, W=15, H=5. Hence, H/W is 1/3 (<=0.5) and L/W=3 (3/2<L/W<=4). From Table 4, we get Cpe factors 0.7, -0.25, -0.6, -0.6 for theta 0 and Cpe factors -0.5, -0.5, 0.7, -0.1 for theta 90. Similarly, from Table 5, we get Cpe factors -1.2 (windward side) and -0.4 on leeward side when theta is 0 and Cpe factor -0.8 (portion near wind face) and -0.6 (portion away from wind face) Case 1. Wind on face A (theta=0), Cpi is +0.5 Cp for columns on face A=.7+.5=1.2 Cp for columns on face B=-0.25+0.5=0.25 Cp for columns on faces C and D=-0.6+0.5=-0.1 Cp for half of roof on A side=-1.2+0.5=-0.7 Cp for half of roof on B side=-0.4+0.5=0.1 Case 2. Wind on face A (theta=0), Cpi is -0.5 Cp for columns on face A=.7-.5=.2 Cp for columns on face B=-0.25-0.5=-0.75 Cp for columns on faces C and D=-0.6-0.5=-1.1 Cp for half of roof on A side=-1.2-0.5=-1.7 Cp for half of roof on B side=-0.4-0.5=-0.9 Case 3. Wind on face B (theta=180), Cpi is +0.5 Cp for columns on face B=.7+.5=1.2 Cp for columns on face A=-0.25+0.5=0.25 Cp for columns on faces C and D=-0.6+0.5=-0.1 Cp for half of roof on B side=-1.2+0.5=-0.7 Cp for half of roof on A side=-0.4+0.5=0.1

Case 4. Wind on face B (theta=180), Cpi is -0.5 Cp for columns on face B=.7-.5=.2 Cp for columns on face A=-0.25-0.5=-0.75 Cp for columns on faces C and D=-0.6-0.5=-1.1 Cp for half of roof on B side=-1.2-0.5=-1.7 Cp for half of roof on A side=-0.4-0.5=-0.9

Case 5. Wind on face C (theta=90), Cpi is +0.5 Cp for columns on face C=.7+.5=1.2 Cp for columns on face D=-0.1+0.5=0.4 Cp for columns on faces A and B=-0.5+0.5=0 Cp for stretch of roof near C side, length =W/2=7.5m=-0.8+0.5=-0.3 Cp for rest of roof =-0.6+0.5=-0.1 Case 6. Wind on face C (theta=90), Cpi is -0.5 Cp for columns on face C=.7-.5=.2 Cp for columns on face D=-0.1-0.5=-0.6 Cp for columns on faces A and B=-0.5-0.5=-1 Cp for stretch of roof near C side, length =W/2=7.5m=-0.8-0.5=-1.3 Cp for rest of roof =-0.6-0.5=-1.1 Case 7. Wind on face D (theta=270), Cpi is +0.5 Cp for columns on face D=.7+.5=1.2 Cp for columns on face C=-0.1+0.5=0.4 Cp for columns on faces A and B=-0.5+0.5=0 Cp for stretch of roof near D side, length =W/2=7.5m=-0.8+0.5=-0.3 Cp for rest of roof =-0.6+0.5=-0.1 Case 8. Wind on face D (theta=270), Cpi is -0.5 Cp for columns on face D=.7-.5=.2 Cp for columns on face C=-0.1-0.5=-0.6 Cp for columns on faces A and B=-0.5-0.5=-1 Cp for stretch of roof near D side, length =W/2=7.5m=-0.8-0.5=-1.3 Cp for rest of roof =-0.6-0.5=-1.1 The sign of the Cp factor indicates if the force is to be taken towards the building or away from the building, and not directly representing the direction of the force I know it would be easier if I had posted this with some sketches, but due to severe time constraint, it will be impossible to do so as of now... I hope you can study this with the IS code in hand and sketch it out yourself and understand. Please ask if you have any doubt.

Yours sincerely Arunkumar
