Valencia High Schools top seniors talk about their plans
By Julia M. Dendinger
News-Bulletin Staff Writer
[email protected]Tom The top 12 students in this years graduating class from Valencia High School are obviously smart they are the top of their class. Membership in the National Honors Society isnt uncommon among them; neither are academic letters and perfect grade-point averages. And they are so much more than that, these future nurses, teachers and business school graduates. Many of them have spent four years not only dedicating themselves to academic excellence but to honing their athletic prowess, musical skills and being leaders in their community. Kaitlynn J. Craig said some of her high school highlights include her team winning the soccer district championship and bringing home the schools first state championship in the sport. Four years of playing basketball and being a NHS member always will stay with Miranda J. Buck. Morris Richard Sparkman said he is proud of being a student athlete and being nominated to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. While he did not get into the prestigious military school, Sparkman says the nomination was a huge honor. For Cayla Otero, her time on the volleyball team, the community service she has performed and earning academic letters all four years are proud moments. Aries Patricia Lee Marquez said she is proud of helping her volleyball team earn a district championship and going to state for the first time in school history, as well as her student internship at Sandia National Laboratory last summer. A first place in band competition showed that hard work does pay off, Gwama N. Hairstonel said. Even if we didnt get first place, that would have been OK, Hairstonel said. Im just inspired by music. Her freshman year, Martha L. Cox made it her goal to be in the top 10 of her class. So, I did that and thats fantastic, Cox said. Other high school highlights include her dedication to the drama department and being secretary of the El Cerro Community Group. Alexis J. Montao said her volleyball team going to state and having consistent grades were both things she was proud of and Marisa C. Lopez always will remember that her soccer team got to state two years in a row. Caleb M. Crum played varsity football for four years and got to watch the pron See Valencia, Page 11

Valencia: Planning their futures
While they worked hard to get where they are, Lopez said its best not to spend a lot of time comparing yourself to other students. You are really competing with yourself, Lopez said. Not surprisingly, most of the top 12 are going on to attend the University of New Mexico. Buck, Marquez and Montao havent decided what field of study they will concentrate on, while Otero wants to earn a degree in speech and language pathology and Hairstonel plans to major in elementary education. Lopez plans to enter UNMs nursing program and minor in Spanish, while Crum wants to pursue a degree in pharmacology. Cox will study nursing at the University of New Mexico-Valencia Campus this fall. Craig will play soccer for New Mexico Highlands University and plans to major in physical therapy. Sparkman is heading off to the University of Denver business school to earn concurrent degrees in engineering and a masters in business administration.

gram grow into a district championship team. Being a straight-A student earned him a place in NHS. Getting to the top of their class didnt happen by accident for these students. There may have been some trial and error, but they learned what worked and offered advice to the underclassmen. Craig advised students not to procrastinate. Buck and Crum said time management is key. Montao said you need to keep your priorities straight to succeed, and Cox gave some advice most teenagers dont want to hear get enough sleep. It was amazing how much better I could do if I didnt stay up until3 a.m., Cox said, laughing. Hairstonel said you simply have to have a lot of love for what you do. Teachers and parents played important roles in supporting them, they said. Our teachers are very supportive, always available to help, Lopez said. Cox said her family played an important role in motivating her to do well in high school, considering she will be the first to graduate in a while.
