Hello everyone This is indeed a very busy time in the year as we begin semester 1 reports. Students Year 1 to 7 will have academic achievement assessed against a grade. These grades range from A to E the following is a brief description of what each grade represents: A Achieving well above expected year level standard; B Achieving above expected year level standard; C Achieving at expected year level standard; D Achieving below expected year level standard; and E Achieving well below expected year level standard. Student personal qualities such as behaviour, attitude and effort will also be reported on. These will be ranked as: Consistently; Often; Sometimes; Seldom; or Not Assessed. There is also the capacity on the report for the teacher to indicate that an interview is required. On Thursday of week 9 from 2.30 4.30 you are invited to the school to collect your childs report and have a look at the work your child has been doing over the semester. This is a fantastic opportunity for your children to showcase all the wonderful things they have been learning about. This is also an ideal time to make an appointment to meet at a later date should you wish to discuss any aspect of your childs educational program with their teacher. Reports that are not collected will be posted home. NAIDOC Week: Over the duration of week 9 we will be celebrating NAIDOC Week. NAIDOC stands for the National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the 1920s which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Indigenous Australians. NAIDOC is a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and an opportunity to recognise the contributions of Indigenous Australians in various fields. This years theme proudly celebrates the 50th anniversary of the presentation of the Yirrkala Bark Petitions to the Federal Parliament. In August 1963, the Yolngu people of Yirrkala in northeast Arnhem Land sent two bark petitions framed by traditional ochre painting of clan designs to the Australian House of Representative. The petitions protested the Commonwealths granting of mining rights on Arnhem Land reserve and sought to recognise the traditional rights and ownership of the Yolngu people to their land. This petition was instrumental in changes to legislation in regard to Aboriginal land rights. Many activities have been organised to recognise NAIDOC week thanks to the very hard working Parent and Community Committee. We will keep you posted with a timetable of events closer to the date. School Board: In the last newsletter I spoke about what being an Independent Public School was and the importance of the School Board in respect to the role they play. One of the most crucial members of the School Board is the School Board Chair. Our Independent Public School Board Chair is Lisa Hindle. Lisa does an amazing job in what is a very significant, demanding and important role on the School Board, thank you so much Lisa. This is a list of her main responsibilities, and I might add this is by no means complete: Running the meetings, Setting the dates for the meetings; Sending out the agenda to all board members before meeting; Assisting with the School Review which will be happening Week 9 Wednesday 3 June and Week 2 Term 3 30 and 31 July. As mentioned in the last newsletter one of the roles of the School Board is to monitor levels of parent/carer satisfaction. Yesterday a Survey was distributed, please take the time to fill this in, we very much value your opinions, suggestions and advice because we want to make Mount Lockyer the best it can be. WAMSE: This is the West Australian Monitoring Standards in Education for Science and Society and Environment for Years 5, 7 and 9. Term 3 Week 3 the tests will administered to measure and monitor student achievement in these two areas. On Monday pamphlets explaining the tests were sent home, if you have any questions or would like to have your child withdrawn from the test please contact me on 98411166. Mills Park Update The partnership between The Mills Park Community Group and The City of Albany to develop a Nature Play Park has developed over the past three years into a strong success story. Both parties are extremely pleased with the way the park is progressing since refurbishment initially started. Over the past year additions have included: Placement of the wood sculpture by James McLean Picnic Table Addition of two aprons to the skate area BMX Track Adding granite boulders up on the hill amongst the peppermint trees Planting of native plants around the skate area Building of the retaining wall off Bundara Close Introduction of additional pathways Irrigation to the planting areas Small log trail toward the Bundara Close end of the park A few native plants were lost before we got the reticulation in. The City have offered us about 50 small natives to replace them and we will be planting in the next month or so. Funding from Lottery West has recently been approved primarily for the log climbing frame & birds nest swing. Due to some changes to the grant, we hope to have enough money to cover the costs of some sitting platforms, limestone wall/seating, and maybe a BBQ. We may need to fundraise or search for another grant to cover some of these costs.

NEWSLETTER QUIZ Q: What does NAIDOC stand for? A:

MANAGING STUDENT BEHAVIOUR

The key to this approach is that the child is given a choice at each step to follow directions or face increased consequences. Students making GOOD CHOICES are acknowledged for their efforts. For students making POOR CHOICES the following consequences apply ~
STEP 1 Student refuses to follow directions. Verbal warning. STEP 2 Student still refuses to follow directionsIn-class consequence eg Time Out area. STEP 3 Student still refuses to follow directionsOut-of-class consequence eg Buddy Class. STEP 4 Student still refuses to follow directionsRED CARD is sent to the office. Parents will be requested to attend school. SUSPENSION Students will be immediately suspended for verbal abuse of staff and/or violence towards staff or students.

WHAT IS BULLYING? Bullying is when a student or group keep picking on another student. They try to hurt them physically or emotionally. The behaviour is deliberate and repeated. A fight or disagreement between equal students is not bullying. HOW TO STOP BULLYING Tell an adult, it is not dobbing to ask for help. Both victim and those bullying will be counselled and supported. Do not be a by-stander; if you witness bullying try to stop it or report it. IF YOU ARE BULLYING Step 1: Warning Step 2: In school isolation and counselling at recess and lunch, parents will be notified Step 3: For continued breaches students will be suspended.

RE-ENTRY FOLLOWING SUSPENSION Students returning from suspension must be accompanied by an adult and will attend the Intervention Centre (Room 20) where an Individual Behaviour Management Plan will be developed and implemented.
