Welcome
On behalf of the Steering Committee, I offer you the warmest of welcomes to San Antonio, Texas, and the 2005 IEEE-IEMDC. This year the conference is being hosted by a Steering Committee representing several universities and industries. Our widely dispersed group is doing our part to support the electric machines and drives industries, which will undoubtedly be improved by your participation in this year's conference. The response to the Call for Papers for the 5th IEMDC was tremendous. We received 460 digests. After thorough reviews, 320 papers were scheduled for oral and poster presentations by the Program Committee. The schedule includes a half day keynote presentations from various leading industries and also six special sessions. This years conference is being held in San Antonio located in the center of our state. It draws its character from the strong European flavor of the city. Our conference hotel will be the Hilton Palacio del Rio, which is located on the cities unique feature, the River Walk. The River Walk was changed from a flood-prone waterway in the 1920's to a below street level treeshaded community of restaurants, hotels, cafes, shops and miles of sidewalk paths along the San Antonio River through the city center and neighborhoods. Within a few minutes from the Hilton is Alamo Park, which contains the restored Alamo Mission where one of the most famous battles for Texas' independence was fought. Try to arrive early Sunday so that you can join your colleagues for our welcome reception at the Hilton. On Monday evening, we will hold our special reception on Hilton Terrace. On Tuesday evening we will have our banquet at the Holton Corte Real which I am sure you will enjoy it. The steering committee and I look forward to seeing you and hope that you will have a fun and memorable experience as well as a scientifically productive week in San Antonio. Hamid Toliyat General Chair, 2005 IEMDC
Welcome
Welcome to the International Conference on Electric Machines and Drives (IEMDC) 2005 in San Antonio, Texas. The original IEMDC was held in 1997. Eight years later it has evolved into a comprehensive technical conference addressing state-of-the-art technologies in electromechanical energy conversion. Undoubtedly, new advances in energy conversion and processing will play a major role in shaping the world for many years to come and hence deserves due attention by governments, academia, and industry. We have noticed this trend in an overwhelming number of excellent submissions. Our technical program includes an interesting variety of topics ranging from micro-electromechanical actuators to large synchronous turbo-generators. The technical program will last three days, from May 16th through May 18th. Four tutorials covering several topics of interest will be held on Sunday, May 15th. We encourage you to stop by and see our representative booths where several industries will be presenting hardware and software necessary for electric machines and drives design and control. In addition to twenty five technical sessions, we have organized six technical tracks addressing special topics of interest. We extend a sincere thank you to the members of organizing committee, international advisory board, reviewers, session organizers, and students who have offered their time, expertise, and ideas throughout this process. It is our hope that at the end of this conference, we would not only gain knowledge to better face the challenges ahead, but also bring back the valuable relationships forged during the conference. We look forward to meeting you in San Antonio.

Design, application, and Installation of IGBT Adjustable Speed AC Drives Dr. Russel J. Kerkman, Engineering Consultant, Rockwell Automation Abstract: ADJUSTABLE-SPEED drives (ASD's) with third generation insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBT's) dominate the low-voltage adjustable-speed industrial market. The fast rise times of third-generation IGBT's have provided reduced package size and, in combination with high-speed digital signal processors (DSP's), provide performance characteristics comparable to dc drives. However, the fast rise times create significant problems, for example, motor overvoltages, communications interference, and bearing currents. The seminar will address adverse effects generated by modern IGBTs and explore techniques to mitigate them. Areas to be covered include bearings, motors, application equipment, drive sensors, and inverter control. Modern Automotive Systems: Power Electronic and Motor Drive Opportunities and Challenges Dr. Ali Emadi, Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) Abstract: More electric vehicle (MEV) concept emphasizes utilizing of electrical power to drive more automotive conventional systems and to facilitate new introduced luxury loads. Improving fuel economy, emissions, reliability, and performance are the main motivations towards the MEV concept. In addition, hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) are promising the most practical solution to reach very high fuel economy as well as very low emissions. Auto manufacturers are also researching fuel cell vehicles (FCVs). FCVs could be considered as an advanced version of the battery powered vehicles in automobiles with all-electric drive train. This presentation intends to focus on engineering fundamentals, power electronic and motor drive applications, as well as state-of-the-art research and development in the areas of MEVs, HEVs, and FCVs. This tutorial addresses the practical issues in automotive power systems. Furthermore, a brief description of the conventional automotive systems and electric and hybrid electric vehicles including series and parallel hybrid propulsion systems will be given. After presenting a comprehensive review of current status and future trends in automotive power electronics and motor drives, this presentation investigates the overall efficiency of HEVs and FCVs. Well-to-wheels efficiency is considered and it is shown that FCVs are not more efficient compared to HEVs. In addition, it will be explained that fuel cells are facing serious practical problems for land vehicles. The infrastructure for FCVs is not available while MEVs and HEVs are like conventional cars with much better fuel economy. In fact, other than higher miles per gallon, improved performance, and lower emissions, MEV and HEV drivers do not face any difference compared to the conventional cars. There is no drastic change in manufacturing MEVs and HEVs for auto industry as well. Other than the fuel infrastructure, on-board hydrogen storage and fuel reforming systems are other main problems to be solved
for FCVs. These require long-term research and development. Significant improvements are also needed to achieve acceptable driving performance and range. Start-up time required for FCVs is also too long. Dynamic interactions between fuel cells, batteries, and power converters causing stability problems are also yet to be addressed. Other than the technical difficulties, which are not clear to be solved in the next 10-20 years, fuel cells and their required power electronic interface are too expensive compared to the MEVs and HEVs. In summary, FCVs are not currently economically feasible. Even if they are practical, their overall efficiency is less than HEVs. Introduction to Object-Oriented Simulation of Drives Patrick L. Chapman and Jonathan W. Kimball, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Abstract: In this tutorial we will discuss an uncommon but interesting approach to simulating electric drives. The method involves building state models of drives from fundamental components. Each component is implemented by the simulationist by only defining the terminal variables and constituent equations. The components are then connected according user wishes with simple "connect" statements. There is no implied definition of input or output - the model does not follow typical signal-flow or block diagram conventions. The model-building algorithm then composes a minimal set of state equations, which can then be integrated with a wide variety of integration algorithms. This eliminates much modeling effort and redundancy on the part of the user. Furthermore, more complicated components can be constructed from simpler ones in object-oriented fashion. From a practical standpoint, this yields convenient variable naming and referencing, as well as excellent modularity. The tutorial will begin with an overview of simulation methods for electric drives that are currently used, with discussion of relative merits. Then, we will present a theoretical discussion of how object-oriented code can be used to generate streamlined state models for switched systems (such as electric drives). Next, we will demonstrate how a commercial software package (Dymola) is used to implement object-oriented modeling. Finally, we show several simulation examples of electric drives that demonstrate the promised advantages. Control of the BLDC Machine with Improved Performance Mehrdad Ehsani, Texas A&M University Abstract: The Brushless DC (BLDC) motor drive system is one of the most popular advanced motor drives. High power density, very compact geometry and high efficiency, along with a simple control are among the main attractions for replacing many adjustable speed applications with this technology. BLDC machine is now mature and increasingly used in automotive, military, traction, aerospace, industrial, and consumer products. In this short course, which is for practicing engineers as well as advanced researchers, we will
address in detail the basics of the BLDC machine, comparing its features with those of other machines, its control strategies and conventional sensorless control techniques. Moreover, Advanced BLDC machine control topics including our novel sensorless position detection technique based on a new physical concept will be presented. Advanced controls are used for improving reliability in case of sensor failure and to maximize the power density, efficiency, and minimize the size and weight of the BLDC generator. The course will end with a discussion of BLDC machine drive application trends. Course topics: Basics of the BLDC machine Salient features of the BLDC Control strategies Conventional sensorless control techniques Advanced sensorless BLDC controls for sensorless high efficiency Advanced BLDC generator control BLDC machine drive application trends
