Lesson Plan Simplifying Ratios

This lesson plan aims to teach students how to simplify ratios. The learning objectives are for students to be able to simplify ratios using common factors, fully simplify ratios using the highest common factor, and calculate equivalent ratios involving different units. The lesson introduces simplifying ratios visually and numerically, provides practice problems for students to work through independently, and assesses student understanding through a concluding activity matching equivalent ratios.

Lesson Planning Sheet Title: Simplifying Ratios Learning Objectives: By the end of the lesson: All students should

d be able to simplify a ratio using common factors. Most students should be able to fully simplify a ratio using the highest common factor. Some students should be able to calculate equivalent ratios involving multiple different units. Keywords: Simplify, Highest Common Factor, Equivalent, Ratio Learning Activities Starter/Introduction Students recap calculating simple proportions by matching a fraction with its corresponding diagram. To extend this activity equivalent fractions and fraction pairs with a sum of a whole could be introduced. Have the solutions presented on mini-whiteboards for assessment and feedback. Development To simplify the first ratio on the second slide it is important for students have a visual representation that for every hollow circle there are two full circles. Therefore 2 : 4 can be simplified to 1 : 2. Once this is established the numerical method could be demonstrated using 2 as the highest common factor. Work through the remaining problems on the second slide by using the visual representation backed up by the numerical method. Discuss that to simplify a ratio all parts must be given in the same unit in order to find the highest common denominator. To consolidate using the numerical method use the interactive Excel file to provide additional examples. When ready, students should be able to progress through the problems on the third slide independently. Feedback solutions throughout to maintain pace. Plenary The plenary is intended to consolidate and assess the progress made by providing examples that cover each of the three differentiated learning objectives. Encourage the class to consider matching equivalent ratios in order to find the odd one out. Differentiation More able: Students could write ratios in the form 1 : n. Students could deal with equivalences with currency. Less Able Students may need to use visual representations to simplify ratios. Resources: Mini-Whiteboards Interactive Excel File.
