We are delighted to be leading this visit to the ancient land of Jordan. It will give fresh insight for Bible students, and a great holiday too. I hope you can join us. Paul & Ruth Williams
Day 1 - Thursday Depart from London Gatwick on our flight to Amman. Arrive Queen Alia airport where you will be met and transferred to your hotel in Amman for dinner and overnight. Day 2 - Friday Amman / Jerash We have a city tour of Amman followed by a visit to Jerash (Gerasa) one of the cities of the Decapolis and the most complete and best-preserved Greco-Roman city in the Middle East. Dinner and overnight in Amman. Day 3 - Saturday Baptism Site / Mount Nebo / Madaba This morning we drive to Bethany-beyondthe- Jordan Baptism Site. The winding loop in the Jordan River opposite Jericho has long been considered the place of Jesus baptism. It is known in Arabic as Al-Maghtas (the baptism site). This is believed by some to be the baptismal site of Matthew 3v17. About two kilometres east of the baptism site, at the head of a lush valley known as Wadi Kharrar, is another important place associated with Jesus and John the Baptist, the village of Bethany where John lived. The term Bethany refers both to the general area between the ancient town and the river. (This should not be confused with the village of Bethany outside Jerusalem, where the Bible says Lazarus was raised from the dead.) The hill at the

heart of Bethany, known as Tel Mar Elijah (Elijahs Hill), is revered as the spot where Elijah ascended to heaven. We visit Mount Nebo (also known as Pisgah), to see where Moses glimpsed the Promised Land that he would never enter (Deuteronomy 34:15). Early Christians revered this spot and made pilgrimages to it from Jerusalem. A small church was built in the 4th Century A.D. to commemorate the end of the life of Moses and was subsequently expanded into the present large basilica with its stunning collection of Byzantine mosaics. We continue Madaba, the city of Mosaics, where we see the 6th Century Byzantine mosaic map at the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George. This depicts the Holy Land as early Christians saw it. Dinner and overnight Dead Sea. Day 4 - Sunday A day of rest and spiritual refreshment Opportunity to rest and relax, and worship God. Dinner and overnight at the Dead Sea. Day 5 - Monday Lots cave / Machaerus / Kerak Castle We drive to Lots Cave via the beautiful Wadi Feifeh road from near Tafileh, along the Kings Highway. Here, after fleeing Sodom, Lot and his daughters are said to have lived (Genesis 19:30). The Bible says Lots daughters gave birth to sons whose descendants would become the Ammonite and Moabite people (Genesis 19:31-38),
whose kingdoms were in what is now central Jordan. We continue to Mukawir (also known as Machaerus), see where John the Baptist was beheaded after Salomes fateful dance for her step- father (Matthew 14:3-11) and finally to Kerak Crusader Castle for a visit and to Petra for dinner and overnight. Day 6 - Tuesday Petra, the Rose-Red City The ancient fortress-city of Petra, which means stone in Greek, was the capital of the Nabateans, who carved this wonderland of temples, tombs and elaborate buildings out of solid rock and who grew rich by levying taxes on travellers to ensure safe passage through their lands. Petras exquisite ruins open doorways in time to the biblical land of Moab and the nearby Valley of Moses. The plains of Moab were so named because this area once fell under the control of King Eglon of Moab in the Iron Age (Judges 3:12-14). To these plains, the wide floor of the Jordan Valley east of the Jordan River, Moses finally brought his people after their epic wilderness journey. This is where Joshua prepared the people for the crossing of the river into Canaan (Joshua 3:1). The areas principal water source, Ain Moussa (spring of Moses), is thought to be one of the many places where Moses struck a rock with his staff to bring forth water (Numbers 20:10- 12). Aarons final resting place lies atop nearby Mount Hor, now called Jabal Haroon (Mount Aaron). Dinner and overnight in Petra. Day 7 - Wednesday Wadi Rum / Aqaba We leave Petra for Wadi Rum, the largest and most magnificent of Jordans desert landscapes. Lawrence of Arabia called this landscape the valley of the moon - vast, echoing, Godlike. We tour Wadi Rum in 4x4 Jeeps and continue to Aqaba where the
remainder of the day is free to relax. Dinner and overnight Aqaba. Day 8 - Thursday Aqaba Depending on the flight time - some time to relax and enjoy the Red Sea shop or visit the Archaeological museum.
