Experiment 3 (A) : Cc205 Lab Mechanic of Structures

This experiment examines how bending moment varies at the point of loading on a beam. The apparatus includes a digital force display, load and hanger, and rules. Masses of 100g, 200g, 300g, 400g are placed on the beam to the left of the cut and the force readings are recorded. The mass is then converted to load in Newtons and the force reading to bending moment in Nm. The results are plotted on a graph and compared to theoretical bending moments calculated using the bending moment equation to determine if the equation accurately predicts beam behavior.

EXPERIMENT 3(a)

TITLE : Bending Moment Variation At The Point Of Loading

OBJECTIVE : This experiment examines how bending moment varies at the point of loading.

INTRODUCTION : *Bending Moment

In a similar manner it can that if the Bending moments (BM) of the forces to the left of AA are clockwise then the bending moment of the forces to the right of AA must be anticlockwise. Bending Moment at AA is defined as the algebraic sum of the moments about the section of all forces acting on either side of the section Bending moments are considered positive when the moment on the left portion is clockwise and on the right anticlockwise. This is referred to as aging bending moment as it tends to make the beam concave upwards at AA. A negative bending moment is termed hogging. THEORY : We know that if a body or object of any sort is stationary, then the forces on it balance, as follows: 1) Vertical equilibrium (total force up = total force down) 2) Horizontal equilibrium (total force right = total force left) 3) Moment equilibrium (total clockwise moment = total anticlockwise moment). We will use the statement: The Bending Moment at the cut is equal to the algebraic sum of the moments caused by the forces acting to the left or right of the cut.

CALCULATION :

Calculation for experimental bending moment (Nm) Bending moment at the cut (in Nm) = Display force 0.125 a) Calculation for theoretical bending moment (Nm) BM (at cut) W : Load (N), a : l : . b) Use theory learned, to calculate bending moment .

DISCUSSION : 1. Comment on the shape of the graph. 2. What does it tell us about how bending moment varies at the point of loading? 3. Does the equation we used accurately predict the behavior of the beam. 4. Plot a graph which compares your experimental result to those you calculated using the theory .
