Table 1 provides a partial list of common Latin abbreviations used in prescriptions and their English meanings. Some examples include aa for ana of each meaning of each, ad for ad to,up to meaning to or up to, and a.c. for ante cibum meaning before meals. Table 2 provides approximate equivalents between common liquid and weight metric, apothecary, and household measures. For example, 1 milliliter is approximately equivalent to 20 minims or 1/6 dram, and 1 gram is approximately equivalent to 15 grains.
