PIPE INSULATION AND CLADDING SPECIFICATION Sear -| Adhesives and Sealers DESCRIPTION ‘Atornative insulation materials raquire the Principal's approval Insulating material used on austenitic stec! surfaces shall contain less than 600 ppm leachable halides and a minimum of 20 ppm sodium silicate for each ppm of leachable halides. Insulation containing asbestos shall not be used. Sealers and adhesives, whether new or aged, shall have the following characteristics: (a) Compatibie with the insulation. (0) Flexible atthe lowest temperature to which they are exposed. (©) Suitable forthe maximum temperature to which they are exposed. (@) Resistant to solar radiation it exposed. ‘Vapour Barrier (2) Aluminium sheet, Type 1100, 2003, 3108 or 5010 (ASTM B208), H14 ‘and Weather temper. Thickness shall bo 0.6 mm for machinery, removable covers, and 79] Protection. vertical vessels larger than 914 mm diameter, and 0.5 mm elsewhere. 20 (0) Stainless stee! jacketing shall be type 304, 1/8 to 1/4 hard temper, 0.25 mm 21 ‘minimum thickness, 28 finish. 22 (©) Vinyi-clad galvanised steel, equivalent to Childers Products Company's 23 ‘Stoel-Jac, with 0.25 mm minimum thickness. This type of jacketing is not 28 permitted on aluminium or stainless steel equipment or piping uness the 25 insulation is mutple-layercollular glass. 26, 27 Glass fibre reinforced plastic jackets shall have a flame spread rating not exceeding 25, in 25 accordance with ASTM E84, and adequate resistance to solar radiation. 23 30. Vapour bartiers coatings, whether new or aged, shall have the following characteristics: 31 32 (a) Compatiity with the insulation. 33 (©) Flexibility atthe lowest temperature to which they are exposed, 34 (©) Permeability not exceeding 0.05 metric perm-cm in accordance with 36 procedure E of ASTM E96, forthe thickness used. 36 (@) Minimum dry film thickness of 1.0 mn. 37 38 Reinforcement for vapour barrier coatings shall be 10 mesh polyester cloth with a 38 ‘minimum mass por area of 0.092 kgimt. 40 4i_| Antisweat ‘Antisweat coatings shall have a flame spread rating not exceeding 80, in accordance with 42-| Coatings ASTM E84. They shall be weatherproof and nonabsorbent and shall constitute a vapour 43 banter. a4 45_| Accessories Wire shall be stainless steel with minimum diameter of 1.2 mm. 46 a7. Bands and seals shall be stainless steel, with a minimum size of 19 x 0.5 mm where 25 banding is larger than 760 mm diameter and 13 x 0.4 mm for smaller diameters. S-clips 43 shall be minimum 0.4 mm thick stainless stool 50 31 52 53 REV 0 DATA SHEET NO. 1878M-DS-ApperdxD ‘SHEET 9 OF 5PIPE INSULATION AND CLADDING SPECIFICATION DESCRPTION T Application 2] General ‘To avoid removal of the insulation, insulation ofthe following flanges shall be delayed as 3 long as practical 7 | (2) Battery mit valve flanges, where removal of binds is required. 6 (6) Control valve flanges, whore the control valves will be dropped for line 7 flushing zo (©) Pump suction valve flanges with temporary strainers. 3 70) Surfaces to be insulated shall be clean, dry fost tree, and painted it specitied by the 7 project specifications. Items shall not be insulated until pressure testing is complote. 7, 13] Plastic Foam When single-layer insulation is applied, longitudinal joints shall be staggered. When 14] and Cellular insulation is applied in mutile layers; al joints shall be staggered with respect to adjacent 75] Glass Insulation layer joints. All insulation shall be installed with the joints tight, except where a packed Contraction joint is required. Filing large gaps or damaged areas at joints with flexible insulation or joint sealer is not acceptable. Insulation shal be carefully fted so that each layer fits snugly over the surface beneath, Irregularly shaped items shall have voids between the item and the insulation filed with ‘mineral woo! or foamed:-in-place polyurethane. A smooth outer insulation surface must be obtained to provide effective vapour sealing when the vapour barrier is applied. For single-layer insulation and the outer layer of multilayer insulation, block edges shall be buttered with a coat of joiner sealer whose thickness shall not exceed 1.6 mm. ‘Bands shall be used to hold single-layer insulation and the outer layor of muitilayer Ingulation. Maximum band spacing shall be 305 mm. ehaislsislolstahssisle Bands or wire shall be used to hold the inner layers of multlayer insulation, with 2 minimum of two bands or wires for insulation segments over 305 nm long. When celular glass insulation willbe subject to vibration orto large and frequent service temperature changes, an anti-abrasion coating shall be applied tothe inner surtace of the Inner layer of insulation. The coating shall be alowed to dry before installation. For vibration, all joint surfaces shall be similarly coated except forthe outer layer which shall bbe sealed with joint sealer. Preformed ‘When single-layer insulation is applied, longitudinal joints shall be staggered. When Mineral Wool insulation is applied in mutiole tayers, al joints shall be staggered with respect to adjacent iG layer joints. All insulation shall be installed with tno joints tight, except where a packed contraction joint is required. Filing large gaps or damaged areas at joints with flxible Ingulation or joint sealor isnot acceptable. Insulation shall be carefully filed so that each layer fits snugly over the surface beneath, Iregulary shaped items shall have voids between the item and the insulation filed with ‘mineral wool or foamed-in-place polyurethane. A smooth outer insulation surface must be obtained to provide etfective vapour sealing when the vapour barter is appliod. Bands shal! be used to hold single-layer insulation and the outer layer of multilayer insulation. Maximum band spacing shall be 305 mm. Bands or wie shall be used to hold the inner layers of multilayer insulation, with a minimum of two bands of wites for insulation segments over 305 mm long, FEV 0 DATA SHEET NO. 1878N-DS-Appendlx D SHEET 4 OF 5Vapour Barrier and Weather Protection Pe Peete PIPE INSULATION AND CLADDING SPECIFICATION DESORPTION Coating reinforcement and sheet vapour barrors, such as fll, shal be applied without wrinkles. Reinforcement shall be open-weave fabric for large surfaces and knitted tape for continuous spiral wrapping on bonds and small fitings. \Vapour barriers shall be applied continuously, without holes or gaps, as soon as the Insulation is in place in order to exclude water. Temporafly exposed ends shall bo protected from rain ‘Jacketing oints shall be sealed when the jacketing is used as a vapour barrier, and when the jacketing overlap or flashing details not adequate to prevent the entry of water. “The minimum jacket lap shall be 50 mm for items up to and including 610 mm diameter and 75 mm for iarger items. Alternatively jacketing seams may be crimped together. ¥Jacketing shall be banded at overlapping seams and at maximum intermediate spacing ‘of 305 mm for piping and 460 mm elsewhere.
