Electronic Stability Program (ESP)
Electronic Stability Program (ESP)
The "Electronic Stability Program" (ESP) is an active safety system which improves vehicle stability in all driving situations. It operates by actuating the brakes individually on one or more wheels on the front or rear axle. ESP stabilizes the vehicle when cornering, braking, or during non-driven coasting to keep it on the road and in the desired lane. It is primarily used for commercial vehicles with trailers i.e. tractor trailers. Scania ESP: It is an automatic system that prevents a truck from skidding, overturning or jack-knifing. Here, the actual path of travel of the vehicle is compared with its desired path of travel (stored on an on-board computer) and in case of divergence of the actual from the desired, correspondingly brakes are applied, reducing engine torque as well, to get the vehicle back on track. The two sub-systems of the ESP provide yaw control and roll-over protection, and also provides the right balance between driveability and safety. Yaw control intervenes in case of slippery, low friction surfaces and to help the vehicle travel along the desires path of travel. And the purpose of roll over protection is to prevent the vehicle from toppling over, in case of high lateral acceleration. MAN ESP: Here, the ESP continuously measures the ride dynamics of the vehicle and intervenes by controlling the engine management ECU and brakes to prevent the vehicle from tipping over or skidding. Accident risks are reduced in case of cornering too fast, emergency braking, hectic evasion etc. The ESP consists of two main subsystems: DSP (dynamic stability program) and ROP (roll over protection). DSP prevents the vehicle from losing traction on wet and slippery surfaces. ROP prevents the vehicle from tipping over on very dry roads. Various parameters measured continuously by the ESP system to control the vehicles stability: Steering angle Lateral acceleration Yawing rate (sped of rotation of the vehicle about its vertical axis) Volvo ESP: In the Volvo ESP system prevents the vehicle from losing control by interacting with the trucks Electronic brake system, engine management system, retarder and the trailers braking system. 3 sensors on the tractor measures Yaw angle Lateral acceleration Steering wheel position A common control unit then calculates the readings from these sensors and when they dont match with the values stored on the on board unit, brakes are actuated as necessary, also engine torque is reduced to decelerate till equilibrium is again attained.
