Educ 2220 Lesson Plan Template

This lesson plan template outlines a 3-day kindergarten lesson on shapes. The goal is for students to correctly name shapes regardless of orientation or size, and describe relative positions using terms like above, below, etc. Each day includes discussions, videos, practicing shape identification on the smartboard, and worksheets. Formative and summative assessments are used to evaluate student understanding before and after the lesson. Differentiation and interdisciplinary connections are also discussed.

EDUC 2220- Educational Technology Lesson Plan Template Shape up your mind

Ella Ryumshin Kindergarten/Mathematics

Common Core Standards:

CCSS.Math.Content.K.G.A.2 Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size. CCSS.Math.Content.K.G.A.1 Describe objects in the environment using names of shapes, and describe the relative positions of these objects using terms such as above, below, beside, in front of, behind, and next to.

Lesson Summary: To help kindergarteners to better understand about shapes, I thought the most effective way would be to learn together by using a smartboard in the class where students can work as a class to name shapes and to recognize shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size by pointing to objects in the class that are the same shape as the one on the smartboard. Estimated Duration:

First day for 30 minutes then two days for 45 minutes. Commentary: My goal is to get the kids excited to learn about shapes and finding other things in the class that are similar. I want to have a group discussion with my students where they help each other and volunteer to point out shapes. I would make sure that every student would get a chance to play around with the smart board. It will be a challenge if I have a large class so that no one is left behind. Instructional Procedures: Day 1: First 10 minutes: Introductory activity- I will get the students to gather around for a discussion to introduce shapes and to find out what they already know. I will show them pictures of the different shapes and see if they can call out any.

Next 10 minutes: Short fun clip- Next I would show my students a short clip about shapes for them to familiarize them about what we will be learning for the next two days. Last 10 minutes: Discussion- To see if the video was helpful for the students. I will ask them what they learned from the short clip, if they liked it, what they didnt understand, which will help me know what I need to put more emphasis on the next day. Day 2: First 10 minutes: Discussion- Since little guys love to talk, I would always ask them what they remember from the day before and for them to get excited about learning more about shapes. Next 35 minutes: Practicing with smart board- On the smartboard, I draw some shapes from the video clip and see if they can call them out, then I have some of them draw some of the ones I dont have yet. Once they are familiar with shapes, I slowly start introducing relative positions like is this shape behind or in front of of this shape?. I will have students play around with the smart board by placing them in different positions. As I have the student up playing around with the smartboard I would have shape blocks for every student so that they can try to do the same thing on their own while I go around the classroom helping any student that is struggling. Day 3: First 10 minutes: More discussion- I want to ask how comfortable they are with shapes, I would go around the room to point at something while they name what shape it is and whether it is in front, behind, above or below something. Next 10 minutes: WorkSheet- I will then hand them a simple worksheet where they can match shapes and get more practice. Practice makes perfect. I will make sure to go around helping any student that is still struggling. Last 25 minutes: Post-assessment/more practice- I have the last 25 minutes to get one-on-one with each student for a post-assessment. As I am calling up each student, the other students can play fun educational games on the computer where they practice more on shapes, so that they can no doubt be familiar with shapes. I would use the pbs kids.org website since they have games for pretty much any lesson for young children. Pre-Assessment: To figure out what my students already know about shapes. I would start of by drawing all the shapes on the smartboard and seeing how many students can identify them. By doing this pre-assessment I can tell how well or how much more time I need to spend on this subject area. Scoring Guidelines: I will grade the worksheets they turn in where I will check how many they missed. It will be a good way to see how well they know the material and a great way to show parents how well their child is doing in the class.

Post-Assessment:

After the lesson is done, to test them of what they know now I would have one on one with each student while the other students are working on another activity. I would take out the shapes we were learning all about and would see how much he/she can identify.

Scoring Guidelines: I would record the post-assessment for report cards that will be sent home to parents. I would also test him/her on the relative positions of the shapes and record that as well. It is important to show parents the improvement of their child and how they are doing, so I would make sure score the students work. Differentiated Instructional Support I will have students that are quick learners and understand the lesson faster than others be my helpers where they go around to help their fellow classmates. I know as kindergarteners they will love that idea because they usually love to be involved and to help out. I would also would keep more challenging worksheets if they student doesnt mind working on extra work, so that I do not discourage him/her from moving forward and expanding their knowledge. Extension http://pbskids.org/games/shapes/ I really like this website because it is perfect for kids. They are tech wizards and are good at figuring out how to use technology. I believe they will have lots of fun and learn a lot on this website about shapes and much more. . Homework Options and Home Connections I would say my students are too young for expecting them to get their homework done. I believe a more effective way would be to give each student their own set of blocks of shapes for them to take home so that they can get more practice and so that they will have their parents to help them as well. I would also send websites home to the parents where the child can get even more practice. Interdisciplinary Connections

In this lesson it is easy to add a little extra in order to introduce something similar. I could start talking about two or three-dimensional shapes which would cover the standard CCSS.Math.Content.K.G.A.3. or I could add clay where they can create the shapes for themselves which would introduce standard CCSS.Math.Content.K.G.B.5. Since I am teaching younger children, I would want to make sure I introduce each standard slowly so that I can make sure they understand it perfectly before we move on.
