InterwriteTM Panel
Overview
The Interwrite Panel is an LCD tablet. The electronic Interwrite Pen is used to control the cursor and to write and draw directly on the Interwrite Panel screen. When used in conjunction with a video projector, the Interwrite Panels screen image can be projected onto an InterwriteTM Board, a standard whiteboard, or any projection surface, where the interaction with the desktop can be seen by everyone in the room. This addition to the Interwrite family of products, which includes InterwriteTM Boards and InterwriteTM Pads, expands the interactive opportunities of the Interwrite system for both the class room and the board room. This Getting Started Guide describes how to assemble the Interwrite Pen, install the Interwrite Workspace software, set up and connect the Interwrite Panel, and calibrate the Interwrite Panel. It ends with a brief overview of the Interwrite Workspace software. Interactive Mode is the operational mode of the Interwrite Workspace software that allows you to take advantage of the full power and robust features of the Interwrite system. The Interwrite Panel is an input device to the computer, much the same as the Interwrite Boards and Interwrite Pads. It allows you to annotate captured screen images and a variety of page types in Annotation Mode, and to run applications and browse the Internet in Mouse Mode. Everything youre doing on the Interwrite Panel screen can be seen on the projection surface, thanks to the attached video projector. And, anyone at the Interwrite Board, or anyone using an Interwrite Pad can interact with the presentation and participate actively in the collaborative experience.

Assemble the Interwrite Pens

The Interwrite Pen is an electronic pen, powered by a single AAA battery, that sends positional signals to the Interwrite Panels electromagnetic digitizer to control cursor movement. The two buttons on the black Pen barrel provide additional mouse-like cursor control. The lower button, the one closest to the Pen Tip, acts as a double-click when you press it. The upper button provides right-click capability.

Replace Pen Battery

The instructions below describe how to insert the batteries that shipped with the Pens, if they were not installed, and how to replace the existing battery, when the Pen no longer functions.
1 Unscrew the Pen, separating the black end with the Pen Tip from the silver barrel. Remove the old battery, if one is in place, and dispose of it properly. Insert a AAA battery into the silver cradle with the positive pole (the + end with the protruding button) pointing toward the Pen Tip. When the battery is in place, screw the two Pen halves back together. RightClick DoubleClick

Notice that each Interwrite Pen comes with two replacement Pen Tips. Simply pull out the used Tip and snap a replacement Tip into place in the end of the Pen barrel. Store the Interwrite Pen in the Pen Holder on the back of the Interwrite Panel.

Troubleshooting Your Interwrite Panel

Device Manager is a component of the Interwrite Workspace software you installed. Its function is to manage the Interwrite hardware devices (Interwrite Boards, Interwrite Pads, and the Interwrite Panel) and their connections to the computer and to the Interwrite Workspace software. When an Interwrite hardware device, such as the Interwrite Panel, is properly connected, it will show up in the Devices dialog, selected from the Device Manager menu. To access the menu, click on the Interwrite Workspace icon (in the System Tray on the Windows Task Bar, or on the Mac Menubar). If the Interwrite Panel is not working correctly, check the following:
If the LED is neither orange nor green, the Interwrite Panel is not powered on. Press the Power button on the Interwrite Panel Control Panel. If the LED does not light up, check your power connections at the DC Jack on the back of the Interwrite Panel, the AC Adapter and the wall plug or power strip. If there is power, but no picture, check the VGA cable connections (or DVI connections, if you are not using VGA) at the back of the Interwrite Panel (VGA IN) and on the computer. If the Interwrite Panel does not show up in Device Managers Devices list, verify that the USB cable is properly connected to the USB port on the back of the Interwrite Panel and to a USB port, or USB hub, on your computer. Unplug the USB cable from the USB port, wait five seconds, and plug it back in. If you have more than one USB port on your computer, try plugging the USB cable into a different port.

Getting Started

Getting Started with Interwrite Workspace

The Interwrite system is at the heart of a successful interactive collaboration, whether it is in a classroom of fourth graders studying world geography, or in a boardroom of corporate executives brainstorming a new product launch. All the tools you will need to stimulate inspiration, connection and participation can be found in the Interwrite Workspace software. Heres a quick look at the Workspace basics to get you started. Interwrite Workspace is run in one of three operational modes, Interactive Mode, Office Mode (Windows only), or Whiteboard Mode. Whiteboard Mode, available only when using an Interwrite Board with Workspace , allows you to capture and preserve notes, drawings, calculationswhatever you write on the Interwrite Board with an Interwrite Marker Pen. Office Mode makes it possible to interact directly with the native files of the Microsoft Office suite of products, PowerPoint, Word and Excel. Interactive Mode, the most feature-rich and robust of the operational modes, allows you to open and run applications while in Mouse Mode, using the tip of your electronic Interwrite Pen on the Interwrite Panel screen to move the cursor. In Annotation Mode, you use the Interwrite Pen to select Interwrite Workspace Tools from the Toolbar. Workspace Tools have been categorized as Annotation Tools, Editing Tools, Page Tools, Presentation Tools, Multimedia Tools, Navigation Tools, File Management Tools, and Setup Tools. The Interwrite Workspace Help file describes all these tools in detail and can be accessed from the Device Manager Menu. The purpose of this document is to give you a feel for the Interwrite system by showing you how to select and use a tool in Interactive Mode. The Annotation Tools of Interactive Mode consist of freehand tools, text tools and drawing tools. Of the freehand tools, the Pen tool is the most frequently used Interwrite Workspace Tool. The following pages describe how to select and configure the Pen tool.

Presentation Files
The presentation file is made up of your annotated pages. The Page Creation and Capture tools are used to create the pages in the presentation file and the Annotation Tools are used to create the annotations. The presentation file is automatically saved as a .GWB file. As soon as Interwrite Workspace goes into Annotation Mode, an untitled presentation file is created. Unless you give the file a name, it is automatically saved using todays date as the filename. (Multiple files created today have 01, 02, 03, etc., appended to the date name.) An existing presentation file can be opened, its pages can be sorted, annotations can be added to the existing pages, and new pages can be added to the file. Your presentation will determine how each presentation file evolves. For example, you can prepare a presentation file of blank maps ahead of time for a geography lesson. Or, you can capture and annotate each of the monthly earnings spreadsheets as you review the past fiscal year during a budget meeting. Or, you can run a PowerPoint Slide Show in Office Mode (Windows only) and annotations can be added to each slide and saved in the native file. You can build your presentation file during your presentation, or you can pre-build it, including the screen captures, images, graphs and text pages you want to present. However you choose to do it, the process is the same. To capture a screen or window, click on the Mouse Mode tool with your Interactive Pen and arrange the desktop for capture. Select an Annotation Tool, the Pen, for example, indicate your capture preference (by clicking on either the Partial, Window, or Screen option in the dialog), and annotate the captured image. Use the Page Creation Tools to add a blank, gridded, or background image page. By default, Interwrite Workspace is in Autosave mode, so your annotated pages are automatically saved as you build your presentation file. Click on the Save tool to save the file using the default filename (todays date), or a name you type on the pop-up Onscreen Keyboard.

Distributing Presentation Files

The Interwrite Workspace presentation files you create can be printed for local distribution, or emailed to anyone, anywhere. Use the Page Sorter tool to review the presentation file. The pages in the presentation file can be sorted, moved, duplicated, merged, and deleted using the Page Sorter tool. When the file pages have been arranged to your satisfaction, you can use Page Sorters export option to export it to one of a number of file formats, or you can close Page Sorter and select an option from the Workspace File Menu. The native file format of saved presentation files has the .GWB extension. GWB files can be read on any computer on which Interwrite Workspace is installed. For general distribution, we recommend exporting the presentation file to the PDF format using the Export PDF File tool located in the Toolbox, or by selecting the the Export PDF File option from the Workspace File Menu. Now everyone can stay in the information loop, whether they were able to attend the presentation or not.
