Electrostatic Fields Lab Guide

This document provides instructions and worksheets for a simulation investigating electrostatic fields created by point charges. Students are asked to observe field lines around single and multiple point charges, identify where field strength and potential are greatest, and complete tables calculating field strength and potential at various distances from a charge. Calculations of electrostatic force between two charged balloons and the acceleration produced are also included. Diagrams and calculations are presented for the forces on objects with different charge configurations separated by a distance. Universal gravity is determined to not need to be included in the calculations due to the much greater magnitude of the electrostatic forces.

Purpose:
Investigate the fields created by point charges when all other forces are ignored.

Apparatus: PhET im!lation Charges and Fields Discussion: " point charge in space creates an electrostatic field# similar to a massive ob$ect creating a
gravitational field. In fact# this similarity e%tends to the mathematical relationship between electrostatic force
