Promoting Reconciliation, Accountability, and Human Rights in Sri Lanka Remarks of Ambassador Michele J. Sison

1) The UN Human Rights Council resolution urges the Sri Lankan government to take meaningful steps on reconciliation and accountability. It calls for an independent investigation into alleged human rights violations during the civil war. 2) The US supports Sri Lanka's reconciliation process and has urged the government to implement recommendations from past reports and resolutions, especially regarding justice, accountability and human rights protections. 3) However, human rights issues are deteriorating in Sri Lanka with increased attacks on minorities, journalists and activists. The rule of law is also weakening with impunity and delays in trials.
