field of sanitary engineering. This is due to many causes: the infrastructure systems
have been constructed gradually, in many cases without logical continuity, and by
using materials from various producers. These are the busiest parts of cities with a
whole number of institutions, shops, schools, pedestrian zones, etc. Each structural
interference or a new construction employing classic means therefore entails
limitations and many further necessary measures. Owing to this, finding of solutions
to these problems was often postponed and the problems only accumulated. This is
one of the reasons why such a great attention has been recently paid to trenchless
technologies. In this respect, the operators of sanitary systems in the city of Brno hav

9912 Dr. Andrew Russell, Local Repair of Sewers Local Repair of Sewers. Sewer deterioration starts from initial defects such as
Swindon, England cracked sewers due to overloading, leaking joints, damage at connections or third
Richard Swan party interference. Deterioration of these initial defects may lead to deformation of
the sewer, subsidence, loss of side support and finally sewer collapse. To prevent
this from happening the engineer has the following solutions: * Do nothing; * Replace
the damaged sewer using the open cut method; * Renovate the complete manhole to
manhole length, or; * Carry out a local repair. Local repairs may be used for the
structural repair and prevention of infiltration into, and exfiltration from, sewers. In
situations where local repairs are appropriate they can be used as an alternative to
full length manhole to manhole linings and so offer water companies the potential for
making considerable cost savings over full length sewer renovation. (2nd paragraph

replacing these old gas pipes with "polyethylene pipes" which offer the advantages of
high ductility and resistance to corrosion. However, replacement of all the old gas
pipes by the open-cut method is both time-intensive and costly. Additionally, it creates
a disposal problem for the large volumes of surplus soil excavated and is a traffic
distrubance. Solving these problems, foreign countries have adopted several
methods of renewing the old pipes by inserting a polyethylene pipe into existing pipe.
However, these methods can be used only for some of the limited gas pipes in Japan
because there are a lot of complicated pipelines include bends and tees in Japanese
urban areas and these methods are not applicable to bends. Tokyo Gas has

a close-fit liner pipe undergoes some changes in characteristics (e.g. geometrical

concept of simulated installation has been adopted in the respective system

liners and interactive liners, relevant when lining water supply pipelines, is recognised.

has been used in the most various applications: - roads, railways, rivers, buildings or
canals undercrossings: - new sewerage and drainage construction; - sewer

and telecommunications cable installation. Among these applications can be also
included the reconstruction of the old buried little bridges. This kind of application was
also used in the USA at the beginning of this technique but with the removal of the

any more the results of accidental discoveries but are being developed in

for both inorganic and organic materials. The main driving force for the development

the creation and selection of a new one specified by the application, therefore it is
directly adapted to the processing technology. Advanced composites offer this

Nancy, France become increasingly popular in western countries. The main reasons for this trend
are: * the need of renewing the existing old urban waternetworks, which are in service
since more than 50-100 years, and have to be replaced in very congested areas *
the disturbance or the interruption of the traffic due to the laying of pipes with
traditional open-trench techniques, which are less and less accepted *the fact that
trenchless laying techniques have significantly improved in the last few years, in
terms of reliability, availability and economics. If we consider the trenchless laying of

Generally speaking, conduits for the jacking method do not undergo in-depth
investigation, in the judgement that the flexible structure of the jacking (i.e. sheath)
pipe, which has joints every few meters, offers high antiseismicity. The author's group
made a simple analysis based on the seismic resistance design standards, and
checked the results for the amount of joint extraction, joint flexural angle, and the
degree of pipe compression stress especially in the event of a Level 2 seismic
motion affecting the jacking pipe. The area in question has a typical irregular ground,
and it was estimated that assessment of propagative seismic waves would be
insufficient if based on simple analysis alone. As such, the group also made a
dynamic response analysis that employed the vertical ascending wave as the imput
seismic motion.

system to resolve problems faced in infiltrating quick sand situations. The first step in
trenchless sewer rehabilitation is always the cleaning of the pipe with high pressure

by the jet even more sand comes in through the defects. The presence of sand
makes both relining and local injection impossible to manage. The highly viscous S1

got gradually contaminated by ferrous-manganese and nitrate. This water is fed into
the network directly. Owing to this, a more excessive secondary contamination has
developed in the interior wall of the pressure pipes but - more important - in the
interior of the distribution network. The gradually increasing and continuously
segregating ferrous and manganese deposit not only reduces the cross section of
the pipes gradually, but it also gathers the ferrous-manganese precipitation still
floating in the water. Thus, the deposit in the pipe still keeps fattening, gets even
thicker. Then at changes in the operating conditions (pipe burst, sectioning out of
conduits, etc.) easily gets loose and together with the flow the contamination is
passed to the consumer causing water quality, water meter operation and substantial
cost problems both to the user and to the Water Works.
