The document summarizes information from several sources about killer whales. It begins by explaining that killer whales are actually the largest species of dolphin, not whales. It then discusses how killer whales are kept in captivity at places like SeaWorld and the impacts on their health and behavior, as highlighted in the documentary Blackfish. The document also provides background on why the Japanese continue whaling and the importance of whales to ocean ecosystems.

Killer Whales are commonly thought to be whales but they are actually part of the Delphinidae, or dolphin, family. They are the largest species of dolphins. This is why they are so good with learning tricks in places like SeaWorld. Dolphins are intelligent creatures. Killer Whales are social animals that are very family oriented. They travel in pods and each pod has their own unique sound, almost like languages. They look similar to others of their kind but can be told apart by the size of their dorsal fins. Killer whales are distinguished by their black bodies and white patches. They also have sensitive skin but very good eyesight in and out of water. Lastly, they prefer cooler waters in coastal regions. I chose this article because it is informative about how to distinguish a Killer whale and why it is considered a dolphin. It bothers me a lot when people call Killer Whales, whales, because they are dolphins. They eat other whales because they are carnivorous. A regular whale, such as a Humpback or Blue Whale, are not dolphins and are not capable of tricks like dolphins can do. Therefore, the Killer Whale is a dolphin. The only kind of Whale they keep in captivity are Beluga whales and you never see them doing abnormal tricks in shows like Killer Whales and Dolphins. Their bodies do not move that way and it is unnatural.

Lauren Lopez ENGL 1102-095 3/10/14 Ingram Documentary filmmaker Gabriela Cowperthwaite became suspicious after one of Sea Worlds Killer Whales, Tilikum, killed his trainer. After research and interviews she found out Tilikum had been through a lot of mistreatment and had killed two other trainers before. They were able to do an MRI on a whale brain and found out they are the same as the human brain but with and extra part we dont have. This means whales can definitely feel emotions. Sea World is notorious for hiring people with no experience but as long as they could swim they were hired. Some people even paid Sea World to work with the whales. As with the whale Willy, from the film Free Willy, it is shown that Willy had a flopped over dorsal fin. This is something that only happens in captivity and does not happen in the wild. Being confined to such a small space, 100 percent of male Killer Whales in captivity have their dorsal fin flopped over. Gabriela believes Sea World has the money to make rehabilitation for the whales instead of dumping them back into the ocean when they can only survive in captivity at that point. I chose this article because Gabriela made a documentary about Killer Whales called, Blackfish. It is also informative about their captivity in Sea World. I watched part of Blackfish and enjoyed what they had to say about whales and even how Killer Whales were treated. Many people believe that since whales are so big, that they are just dumb creatures. They are actually very smart and family oriented. A part in the film Blackfish that caught my attention was about the MRI they did on a whale brain. This just proves how capable they are of feelings and how similar they are to us. Just because we do not speak their language, does not mean we are not the same.

Lauren Lopez ENGL 1102-095 3/10/14 Ingram . N.p.. Web. 10 Mar 2014. <http://www.animalplanet.com/tv-shows/whale-wars/aboutwhaling/why-japanese-hunt-whales.htm>. This blog post is from when Animal Planet used to host a show called Whale Wars. This post explains why the Japanese participate in whaling even though whales are an endangered species. The Japanese have been whaling for such a long time that is has become a tradition and part of their culture. For hundreds of years they have captured whales by using nets and then harpooning them to death. Killing whales for food escalated drastically when World War II broke out. Whales became a main food source for them since whale meat is full of protein. The Japanese are very defensive when they are approached about whaling and feel disapproving of what they eat is a threat and an insult to their culture. They claim they are keeping tabs on the amount of whales there are and the amount they kill but this still does not change the fact it is wrong because they are an endangered species. I chose this source because I am aware that Animal Planet once had a show called Whale Wars, where people would go after Japanese whaling boats and confront them. I wanted to know why the Japanese are so hung up on killing an endangered species and why they started in the first place. Im sure it is not just the Japanese who do this to this animal but they are the primary source of killing it.

Lauren Lopez ENGL 1102-095 3/10/14 Ingram Killer Whales are not scientifically classified as whales but rather part of the dolphin family, and the largest at that. Their real names is Orcas and are considered killers of the ocean because they are carnivores that hunt other marine life such as sharks, seals, birds, and other whales. They hunt in pods when they want to kill just as wolves hunt in packs. In movies they are portrayed as monstrous killers but they dont hunt humans. Rather, it has been reported by Australian whalers that Killer Whales helped them hunt whales and called them whale killers. An error in translating may have occurred along the way and that is why they are called Killer Whales and thought to be actual whales. I was drawn to this particular site because it contained a lot of information for one and it explained how Killer Whales may have gotten their name and common misunderstanding that they are whales. One of my questions was why they started getting called this in the first place.

. N.p.. Web. 10 Mar 2014. <http://www.whalefacts.org/why-are-whales-important/>. Aside from being the largest creatures this planet contains, whales are very important for our planet. They regulate the food chain in the sea by eating and creating feces. Blue Whales for example, eat millions of tiny organisms that live in the ocean called krill. If whales were to become extinct, there would be an overpopulation of krill. Whale feces help reduce the amount of carbon dioxide in the air. If carbon increased, this would affect the polar ice caps. Other organisms that live in the ocean, such as phytoplankton, feed off of whale feces and cleanse the air. If they had nothing to feed off of, other creatures such as fish would suffer because of the

Lastly, many people also like spending money on whale watching, and this helps the economy a lot. I really liked this article because I wanted to emphasize somehow just how important whales really are. Not just as the largest creatures but to the ocean and the earth. I had a lot of questions answered by reading this and feel more appreciative toward this animal.

Blackfish. Dir. Gabriela Cowperthwaite. Magnolia Home Entertainment, 2013. .

I watched this film on Netflix to get a better grasp on Killer Whales, or, Orcas. I felt that if I watched this film it would be educational and give me more information I needed about Killer Whales. I learned about how this particular species began to be kept in captivity and how they were treated. I also learned the danger of keeping them and the many legal issues people feel about this animal being kept in activity knowing it is dangerous. Not only does is talk about their captivity in SeaWorld and other parks, but it talks about the attacks they perform on their trainers as well as how they are in the wild.
