STANDARDS & REFERENCES
The report is done on the basis of Electrogeometric Model described in the
following papers:
IEEE Transactions on Power Apparatus and Systems. Vol PAS95, No. 4. Jul/Aug 1976, Pages 1303-1310.
IEEE Transactions on Power, Vol. 9, No. 1, January 1994, Pages
314321.
The verification with the Protected Zone method is done according to Switchgear

PROJECT DATA
For Vizcarra Substation the Basic Insulation Level without altitude correction
factor is
Vs = 1300 kV
In the Switchyard, the 220 kV strain bus consist of two ASCR conductors per
phase, each with a diameter of
d = 31.62 mm
and the separation between conductors is
e = 200 mm
The width of the bay will be

b = 20 m
and the 220 kV conductors will be installed at
h = 12 m

DESIGN WITH ELECTROGEOMETRIC MODEL
4.01
Striking Distance
According to the electrogeometric model, the striking distance rs in [m] of a
lightning stroke is a function of the critical current I in [kA] as follows
rs = 8 I 0.65
The critical current is defined
Vs
I = 2
Zs
where
Vs = the basic insulation level of the conductors [kV]
Zs = the impedance of the conductors [Ohm]
The total impedance of the conductors system is calculated according to the
formula
2h
Zs = 60 ln
Re q
where Req is the equivalent radius of two conductors per phase (n=2), which is
alculated according to the formula
d e
Re q = n n
2 2
Then the calculated values are

21-30-22-E-Rev A
Req = 56.2 Ohm
Zs = 363.4 Ohm
Ic = 7.155 kA
rs = 28.75 m
The actual critical distance Rs must be calculated on the basis of rs corrected with
the altitude correction factor, which is determined according to the formula
k =e
H 1000
8150
Then the altitude correction factor is
k = 1.3758
and the value of the critical distance is
Rs =
rs
k
Rs = 20.89 m

Height of the Overhead shield wires
According to the Figure 1, the overhead shield wires must be located above the
main conductors at a distance x, which can be calculated by solving the equation
2
b
2
Rs = + ( R s x ) 2
2
The solution is
x = 2.55 m

The criteria for this method is that the level of the strike is twice the height of the
overhead ground wire and the protected zone is defined for the distance R. Then
according to the Figure 2, if the shield wires are located above the main conductors
at a distance x, we have the following equations
H=h+x
R+h=2H
2
b
R2 = + H 2
2
Solving this equations
R = 15.024 m
H = 18.048 m
x = 3.024 m

CONCLUSIONS
The overhead ground wires will be located above the main conductors at a
minimum distance of 2.55 meters. However, in order to use conservative value the
design distance will be 3.00 meters.
