2 FORGET ME WATT INTRODUCTION The problem exists that people often leave potentially dangerous devices plugged into electrical sockets whilst turned on. This is caused by people being forgetful, easily distracted, and generally unaware of the concequences which include fires, high energy consumption, and potential product deterioration. The Forget Me Watt (FMW) system remedies this problem by allowing a user to check whether or not they remebered to power off appliances, and switch them off if need be when away from the home or office. Push notifications can also be enabled for further protection informing a user of potential risks. All of this from the convenience of your phone or tablet. 3. BUSINESS SECTION 3.1 Vision We intend to provide our customers with peace of mind over the safety of their homes and offices whilst reamianing convenient and informative to create a more sustainable use of energy. 3.2 Industry Analysis: Technology Industry Industry: Technology Industry. Force: High/Low: Justification: Buyer power: High Buyer power is high because buyers have many different choices of whom to buy from. The technology industry has many companies within it making and providing rival products and services. The technology industry is far from being a monopoly with according to PWC 4 out of the global top 10 companies by market
3
3 capitalisation are technology companies. (Price Waterhouse Cooper (PWC), (n.d.).) Supplier power: Low Supplier power is low because FMW has many choices of who to buy from. There are many suppliers of raw materials. An example of this can be seen in application developers. There are many developers available to choose from to complete the same service. (Sourcing Line. (n.d.).) Threat of new entrants: Low The threat of new entrants is low because it isnt very easy for new entrants to enter the market. Significant barriers to entrance excist including high start up costs for research, design, and production. Along side this a great deal of skill and knowledge is required for the creation of such products and services. Furthermore with the excistence of a wide range of technological advances, patented ideas/work pose as limits to new product creation. (WikiWealth, (n.d.).) On the other hand the barriers to entry are declining more and more due to out sourcing and on- demand business models. Because of this the threat of new entrants is increasing. (Deloitte, (n.d.).) Threat of substitutes: High The threat of substitute products and services is high because there are many alternative products and services available. There are many different companies producing/providing slightly variated
4
4 versions of the same product. An example of this can be seen in the retail store Noel Leeming. Noel Leeming sell a large variety of different brands of desktop computers including Apple, Acer, HP, and many more. Customers have the choice to purchase from any of these brands to get the goods/services they desire. (Noel Leeming, (n.d.).). Rivalry among existing competitors: High Rivalry among existing competitors is high as competition within the market is fierce. The high level of competition is demonstrated in the large amounts of money spent on the advertisement of products and services in the hope to attract more customers ahead of competitors. For example, Samsung during their 2013 financial year spent 8,019,462 million Korean won on advertising for their products. (Samsung. (n.d.).). Overall attractiveness of the industry: The overall attractiveness of the industry is pretty low. With buyer power high and supplier power low most companies dont have much of an ability to manipulate their price level as they have to remain price competitive. Whilst barriers to enter into the technology industry currently exist, they are decreasing as time goes on, hence the threat of new entrants is increasing. Many variations of products are available within the industry to fulfill customers needs and wants. This means that the threat of substitute products is high and will only increase further as the threat of new entrants increases. Rivalry among existing competitors is fierce due to the large number of substitues already available and high levels of buyer power. 3.3 Customers and Thei r Needs

5 Our target group of customers are owners of electronic appliances/devices. This is because people owning electronic appliances/devices want to ensure the safety of such devices as well as the environment in which they are using them. Because our target audience is is so wide the types of people using the FMW system will be varied. Not everyone using the sysytem is going to be technology savy and because of this will require the system to be easy to operate. As well as this the information generated from the system needs to be easy to understand/interperate. Customers will also need to find FMW more convenient then other methods. 3.4 The Product and Service FMW satisfies customers need for convenience as instead of having to rush home to check on their appliances/devices users can instead quickly check their appliances/devices power usage and switch it off if required. The need for ease of operation is catered for as users are able to follow a simple step by step set up process that can easily be altered at any time. Once the system is set up users merely have to navigate from the menu to access their desired function. The information presented to users is formatted in generally accepted/recognised units. For example, when looking at a appliances/devices energy consumption a range of statistics are displayed from wattage through to the cost. 3.5 Suppliers and Partners FMW is produced within the company. Our suppliers include those who provide raw materials for the powerboard such as plastic, wire, and circuts. Our partners are application platform providers such as Apple, Android, and the Google Play Store. They provide the platform for our application to run on. Without this customers would be unable to access the application rendering the system useless. 3.6 Strategy: Differenciation FMW focuses on a broad market as its competitive scope. This is because users of electronic apliances/devices arent a niche market as the majority of people in the developed world use electronic appliances/devices everyday. The FMW system doesnt focus on offering the cheapest option, instead providing the best and most beneficial to achieve its purpose.

6 The overall strategy is therefore Differeciation. 3.7 Value Chain Activity: Technology development (and research and devel opment) The most important value chain activity for this business is Technology development (research and development) In order for the the FMW system to carry out its vision it needs to run using the most advanced technology to optimise safety and convenience. By using a differenciation strategy we are able to allocate as many resouces as required without the worry of remaining low cost. Completing research and development to develop our technology is important in assuring we provide peace of mind to a large variety of customers. 3.8 Business Processes 3.8.1. RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT PROCESS This process is important as it ensures FMW fulfills its vision of providing users with safety, convenience and peace of mind. By going through the research and development process these factors are increased to ensure they are satisfying customers needs as effectively as possible. The best version of our product can be delivered through this process.
