TANTAN DISCRETE VEHICLE TRACKER
INTRODUCTION
Vehicle theft has been an increasing problem in New Zealand in recent years with many of
stolen vehicles being older models with poor security (NZ Police, 2013). To overcome the
problems of vehicle theft, we have outlined a solution in creating a discrete tracking device
for cars which allows users to easily locate their cars remotely using information sent from
these devices when the car is on the move. The tracking devices use data which is then
processed into valuable information stored our business and then coordinates the
information with customers and users (Patrick Bertagna, 2010).
3. BUSINESS SECTION
3.1 Vision
Our tracking device will put you at ease from worries of having a stolen vehicle. At a low
price, the discrete, accurate, user-friendly tracking device to locate theft-prone vehicles will
make sure your cars location is never unknown to you.
3.2 Industry Analysis: Car Security Industry
Industry: Car security industry.
Force: High/Low: Justification:
Buyer power: High Buyer power is high because although a tracking
device is very useful, initially there may not be a
high amount of buyers because buyers will think
it is unnecessary as long as they have a car alarm
or immobilizer installed on their car and they will
think the chances of their car being stolen is
unlikely. Therefore they have a high power if not

many people buy it.
Supplier power: Low Car tracking devices use telecommunication
systems in conjunction with a GPS(Global
Postioning Satellite) system. As car tracking
devices primarily use GPS as its hardware
(Navman, n.d.) , supplier power would be low as
GPS hardware and manufacturers are widely
available(Tracking Systems, n.d.).
Threat of new entrants: High The threat of new entrants is high because there
are not many barriers to entry in the car tracking
device in terms of the market conditions. A car
tracking device would only need to be designed
and a new entrant would need to form a
partnership or sign a contract with a
telecommunication company in order to get
started(Navman, n.d.).
Threat of substitutes: Low Although there are many types of car security
devices that can prevent a car from being stolen
such as alarms and immobilizers(Cyber Systems,
2013), there are not many other substitute goods
that can replace a device that can track the
location of a motor vehicle.
Rivalry among existing
competitors:
High There are many existing firms that have already
developed a car tracking device thus making the
market quite competitive(Elizabeth Carver, 2014).

4

4
Overall attractiveness of the industry: The car security industry is a easy industry to enter
as it is easy to setup and the disadvantages of entering the industry are outweighed by the
benefits as well as the potential for success in the industry as supplier power is low allowing
us to minimize costs to cost differentiate from competitor products.
3.3 Customers and Thei r Needs
Our target customers would be those that want an extra layer of security on their cars, this
could range from car enthusiasts that really like their car to people who have older car
models with poorer car security which are more vulnerable to theft. People who cannot
afford to pay for insurance could also be potential customers as may want to locate their
vehicle rather than paying expensive claims and yearly costs for insurance and they have the
ability to catch the thieves red handed.
3.4 The Product and Service
The TanTan discrete vehicle tracker will be able to satisfy our potential customers needs
because it will be discrete so that thieves will be unaware that the vehicle has a tracking
system installed on it. This will benefit our customers as they can easily locate their vehicle
via the tracking service on our website.
3.5 Suppliers and Partners
A car tracking device may need multiple suppliers and partners in order for the product to
be of quality and reliability. An important supplier is the manufacturer of these tracking
devices(Dixon & Hales, 2001). Their activity is important to the business because they will be
relied upon to deliver quality as well as reliability of the product. Our manufacturers are also
important to the success of our product as the product must be produced and delivered to
retailers in time. Another potential supplier would be a company that provides the GPS
satellite system as they will need to provide us with the technology to track our devices. Not
only can they be a supplier but they could also be partners as we will need to work closely
with them to further develop our product.

5

5
Potential partners would be retailer stores whom we can distribute our product to and have
it sold on the shelf.
3.6 Strategy: Focused Low Cost
Our stategy to breakthrough in this market would be to adopt the focused low cost strategy
as we will be choosing to compete in a focused market segment with a narrow scope. The
focused low cost will benefit the TanTan car security tracker as lowering costs will help gain
a competitive against rivals on the market and give us a unique selling price which will
attract more potential customers as the market is already quite competitive.
The overall strategy is therefore Focused Low Cost.
3.7 Value Chain Activity: Market and sell the product or service
The most important value chain activity for this business is Market and sell the product or
service
Marketing and sales of our product is the most important value chain activity for the
business because in a competitive market, our focus is to gain an a competitive advantage
over rivals and gain more market share. By focusing on marketing and sales, it can help
lower costs which is what we intended to do with our focused low cost strategy, gain
customer loyalty as this is important in a competitive industry, and increase sales by making
potential customers well aware of our product and the costs we can provide our product at.
3.8 Business Processes
3.8.1. CUSTOMER SURVEYING PROCESS Customer surveys provide us with up-to-date data
of what customers want, what they expect, and any improvements they would like to see
from our business and our product so that we can market it according to their desires. This
process helps our important value chain activity of marketing and sales as it can put us in
the right direction with direct feedback from potential customers so that we can make
adjustments on our product and our service for our customers needs.

6

6

3.8.2. SALES PROCESS The sales process is the process which customers go through when
buying our product and getting it set up. It is important to our vision as we want to make
our product as user-friendly as possible and the sales process would be a part of this. It is
also an important part to our value chain activity Marketing & Sales as it is what we focus
on and having a simple sales process will attract more customers.

3.10 Systems

3.10. 1. DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM - This system is used to create, maintain and
provide controlled access to the information and data stored in our database. Its main
purpose is to store all our operational data such as location of device, order details,
customers details, stock details etc that will be used when needed and processed into
valuable information that can be used for both customer and staff . It also incorporates the
functionalities of both business processes as it stores the information of both customer
surveys and sales data.
3.10. 2. STOCK ORDERING SYSTEM The stock ordering system will help our value chain
activity: marketing and sales. This systems purpose is to maintain a safe buffer stock as well
as lowering our costs by benefitting from bulk buying. The system will help keep track of
how many units of our devices we have that are ready to be shipped, how many our
retailers purchase from us and the rate at which we need to purchase from the
manufacturers and the rate at which we need to distribute to our retail sellers.
3.10. 3. DEVI CE TRACKING SYSTEM This system is the backbone of our company and our
TanTan vehicle tracking device. The main purpose of this system is to locate the devices
when information is requested by customer or staff. It works with the GPS tracking device to
provide an accurate, real-time location of the vehicle when a user logins into their account
to find their car . This system serves as the devices main feature of our TanTan tracking
device.

important to our business as it improves customer satisfaction by creating a user friendly
sales process that will sort out the purchase of our device for customers with ease. Our
database management system also brings value to our business and helps us achieve our
vision by handling all the necessary data in order for our product to function efficiently. IS/IT
also helps us implent a constant improvement process. By using IS/IT we are able to get
customer feedback via our website and have all this information processed to our marketing
team and use the feedback for improvements to the product. Overall, our product is
focused on tracking vehicles locations in a user friendly manner as our vision states. The
product is also frequently being improved by feedback from the users themselves and will
become an even better product to meet customers needs.
