A Proposed Urban Greenery and Community Park
A Study on the Revitalization of Shrine Hills through the application of Landscape Infrastructures and
Behavioral Controls in Social Architecture for Safety

With the vast urbanization of cities, hills and patches of green are ceaselessly altered by
developers without any remorse. Subdivisions and other high load-bearing developments were made
in Shrine Hills even if it isnt fit for such developments. These led to landslides, sinkholes, mud flows
and unwanted water runoff.
1
Because of these drawbacks and life-threatening occurrences, the Shrine
Hills area is now reclassified as a protected zone.
2
Public spaces are great places that have many real and measurable benefits; from the
economic, environmental and social aspect.
3
Outdoor recreation as well as nature tourism is the big
growth areas in leisure and holiday activities today. As the populations of most countries become more
urbanized, and as work become less and less connected with the land, many more people are seeking
to recapture a connection with nature and with wild landscapes.
The proponent sees Shrine Hills as a site that could be converted into a new type of open
space, wherein risks, safety and fear are addressed by behavior control modules. With the application
of behavioral controls in social architecture, the proponent aims to study safety in public parks, to
study the actions influenced by architecture and to reduce the risks commonly found in public areas.
The study of landscape infrastructures would also play a vital role in achieving utmost safety in the said
proposal.
To showcase its potential of becoming a prime spot of recreation, the proposed Urban
Greenery and Community Park in Shrine Hills is envisioned to study the renewal of the human
interaction lost within the city. It can be utilized to establish a respect for nature, provide recreational
venues, become a key to the citys advancement and more importantly, be a catalyst for urban green
conservation in Davao City.
