An American Committee for the Study of War Documents was established in 1955 as a private group of scholars, interested in documentary
research and especially in the microfilming of records of foreign origin kept in American depositories. In 1956. the American Committee be-
came a committee of the American Historical Association. Its present Chairman (1959) is Professor Oron J. Hale, University of Virginia,
who was preceded by Dean Reginald H* Phelps, Harvard University, and Professor Lynn M. Case of the University of Pennsylvania* An initial
Ford Foundation grant and additional funds provided by the Old Dominion Foundation, Lilly Endowment and the Avalon Foundation enabled the
Committee to undertake the cataloguing and microfilming of declassified German records in the custody of the World War II Records Division

This Guide is one of a series of finding aids describing those declassified seized German records deposited at the World War II Records
Division, National Archives, that have " been microfilmed "by the Microfilming Project of the Committee for the Study of War Documents of the
American Historical Association* The Guide contains the text of data sheets identifying records filmed. A copy of the data sheets has "been
filmed as a target sheet at the beginning of each roll of film*
This Guide describes H3 rolls of film of records of civil government agencies (mainly in Hesse), records of the National Socialist
Party and affiliated local offices in Hesse and Baden, records of the Deutsche Arbeitsfront (DAF), records of the ReichsstudentenfiSihrung
as well as of the National Sozialistischer Studenten Bund (ITSDStB) with its suboffices, records of student fraternities, and records of the
Landesbisciiof der Ivangelischen Landeskirche Hess en-Nassau* With few exceptions, the documents refer to the period of National Socialist
rule*
The records in this collection constitute a valuable aid for the study of many aspects of German administrative and political history
in the 1930's NSDAP records, especially those from the Kreisleitung Marburg/Lahn, yield much information on the use of mechanisms of po-
litical control on the local level of government, on the social background of local political leadership, and on the development of National
Socialist ideology* The files of the NSDStB offer an insight into the Gleichschaltung of university life after 1933, while the records of
the fraternities and the Landesbischof of Hessen-Nassau contain information relative to the conservative opposition in the 1930

s* The value
of the records of the fraternities is enhanced by the fact that they extend back into the nineteenth century and thus reflect changes in the
intellectual, political and social views of students over a prolonged period of time. Lastly, the DAP files give some indication of the
social welfare policies implemented in Germany after 1933*
Documents in this collection which were not filmed consist mainly of repetitious or stray items, such as bills, duplicates, local
personnel files and books or periodicals available at the Library of Congress.
The terms " Serial" and " Roll" in this Guide refer to the sequence of film. The " Item" number is the identification symbol on the
original folder within the captured records collection. " Provenance" indicates, where ascertainable, the archival origin of the documents
whose description follows. The symbol " FT" means that the folder has been filmed throughout; the symbol " FS" denotes that the folder has
been filmed selectively* " 1st frame" gives the frame number of the first page of the folder. Every exposure has been given a frame number
consecutively throughout the filming operation. The " Notes" provide a general idea of the nature of the materials but should not be taken
as exhaustive descriptions. .Apart from a few minor rearrangements folders were filmed in numerical order. Although, on the whole, subjects
tended to appear coherently and in numerical sequence, it is still necessary to check the whole Guide for any one subject*

Some of the individuals concerned were Viehh&ndler and the re-
cords indicate how the livelihood was denied them by Nazi law.

schulungsleiter Dr. Jensen of Marburg/Lahn, NSDAP, including
Stimmungsberichte about the party in Marburg, various NSDAP
circulars* information on personnel, records of Veranstaltungen,
information about Schulung of party members, and information
about other types of local activity, 1935-37. For further in-

Correspondence from the files of the Ortsgruppenleiter,
Ortsgruppe Marburg/Lahn, Gauwaltung Kurhessen of NSDAP pertain-

The subject matter varies and includes items pertaining to the
political reliability of party members, Gerichtsverfahren against
party members and investigations of the business malpractices of

37. The dispute arose from a labor dispute, the injured party
" belonged to the NSBAP and sought retribution through its organs.
The case shows how some party members sought to use its powers
of compulsion to coerce personal enemies, and to satisfy private
desires for vengeance.

1) correspondence of Dr. Kubach, Leiter des Reichsberufswettkam-
pfes der deutschen Studenten (EBWK), the Ausschuss within Amt
'Ifiseenschaft und Facherziehung of IFSDStB of the Reichsberufs-
wettkampf of HSBAP (other Ausschtlsse were in Wehrmachtgliede-
rungen, Handwerk, and gewerbliche Wirtschaft), 1938-39. The
purpose of KBWK was to administer annual competitive examina-
tions, Berufs-Leistungsprttfungen. The correspondence lists
the titles of prize essays (e.g. " Mr. 736/1937/3^" Vorschla-
ge zur Erh6hung der einheimischen Eisenerzeugung und Umstellung
auf neue Verfahren im Rahmen des Vierjahresplanes" ), indicates
that prize essays were transmitted to interested agencies, etc.

student groups that was characterized also by antisemitism. The fol-

1938-Ul. Much of the correspondence is of Dr. Kubach of Amt f. Wis-
senschaft u. Facherziehung who was also chief of the Reichsberufs-
wettkampf (BBWK) and deals with EBWK matters. Other correspondence
is of Fachgruppen (Rechtswissenschaft, Medizin, etc.), Abt. Arbeits-,

deutschen Studenten of Reichsstudentenftthrung, NSDStB, 1932-33.
The correspondence consists of carbon copies (on yellow paper)
of the Amt s routine and official business which had bearing on
relations with foreign countries (Italy, Spain, France, etc.),
political propaganda for the Nazi movement through sporting cir-
cles, etc. There is also information on Anti-Semitism in the
sportsworld.
