DEFINITIONS AND FORMULE
Pow er: Pow er is the rate of doing w ork and in m etric system ,it
is expressed in W atts (W ) or often in kilow atts (kW ).
O utput Pow er of 3-Ph Electrical M otor:
P (kW ) = (1.732 x Line Voltage x Line C urrent x p.f.x (M otor Eff./100))
1000
P (kW ) = 0.746 x H orsepow er
Torque: Torque is a tw isting force about an axis of rotation. It
is m easured in units of force tim es distance from the
axis (N m ).For an electric m otor,Torque is its turning
capacity and hence, its m ost useful characteristic.
Torque and Pow er are related to each other
by the follow ing equation:
Pow er (kW ) = Torque (N m ) x Speed (rpm )
9550
Inertia: Inertia is the nam e for the tendency of an object in
m otion to rem ain in m otion.Typically for cylindrical
objects,it is given by:
G D
2
(kg-m
2
) = 1/2 x M ass x (D iam eter)
2
A cceleration Tim e A cceleration Tim e of a m otor is related to
Total Inertia at the m otor shaft as w ell as
A cceleration Torque by the follow ing equation:
A cc.Tim e (sec) = G D
2
(kg-m
2
) x C hange in Speed (rpm )
375 x A cc.Torque (N m )
A cc.Torque of a m otor can be approxim ated as follow s:
W here Ts = Starting Torque , Tb = Breakdow n Torque ,
TL = Load Torque at M otor Shaft.
Tacc = acc.tim e (sec).
MOTORS WITH VVVF DRIVES
M ore and m ore m otors in industries are getting driven by VVVF
drives for accurate speed control.W hile accurate speed control
results into better product quality end product and/or saving of
energy, perform ance of m otors w ith VVVF drives is considerably
different than w hen they are fed directly by m ains supply.
U nless the m otors have separate forced fan-cooling,reduced
speeds requires that their outputs are re-rated to allow generated
heat to be adequately dissipated. This is of particular im portance
w hen m otors are running at very slow speeds but still requiring
constant torques through out the speed range.
Further, unlike the m ains supply,VVVF supply voltage is non-
sinusoidal and is often in the form chopped w aveform s.This pulse
W idth M odulated (PW M ) w aveform has detrim ental effects on
m otor torque capability as w ell as its therm al characteristics. This
also calls for additional de-ration of its output.PW M chopped
w aveform also leads other m otor issues such as:
D ecreased Insulation life due to dv/dt effects as w ell as increased
voltage levels at the m otor term inals due to re ected w aves
Increased noise levels especially at low VVVF carrier frequencies
Reduced bearing life through Electric D ischarge M achining
(ED M ) effects.
M otor over-heating due to harm onics in PW M w aveform
Possibility of generating shaft currents
A s w ith m ost applications,proper investigation during project
conceptualization,as w ell as prior to actual installation, often
saves considerable tim e and m oney in solving som e of the above
m entioned issues.
W ith vast experience of Toshiba engineers, cost effective
and reliable M otor-D rive solutions can be ensured.Follow ing
inform ation helps in selecting the m ost optim um solution:
Type of Load / A pplication (e.g.C onveyor/Fan/Pum p/
M ixer etc)
KW and Torque required in the required speed range
Supply Voltage and Frequency w ith their tolerances

FLAMEPROOF Ex d
M otors are constructed so as to contain an
internal explosion w ithin the m otor and prevent
the transm ission of am e to external atm osphere.
External tem perature during operation is kept such
that the surrounding am m able atm osphere cannot be ignited.

INCREASED SAFETY Ex e
These m otors are not built to w ithstand an internal
explosion ( am eproof). They are designed to
ensure safety by m eans of a num ber of special
features to ensure freedom from arcs, sparks or
dangerous surface tem peratures. They resem ble
standard m otors in appearance but have special increased
safety term inals w ithin an IP56 term inal box.
The m ain features of increased safety m otors are:
Special attention to air gap concentricity and clearance of all
rotating parts
C om ponents subject to im pact tests
Tem perature rise 10C low er than the perm itted m axim um
for that class of insulation
M axim um surface tem perature T2 or T3
C om pliance w ith tE characteristics
Special term inal block to accom m odate speci ed creepage
and clearances
Term inal block m aterial ensures anti tracking
The m axim um surface tem perature (T) applies to all surfaces
of the m otor, both internal and external.U nder locked rotor
conditions, the rotor tem perature in certain designs increases
faster than that of the stator w indings. In either event this is
catered for in conjunction w ith the tE tim e.
tE TIME
tE tim e is de ned as the tim e taken for a.c.w indings w hen

NON SPARKING Ex n
These m otors are for use in Zone 2 hazardous locations.
The Ex n m otor is very sim ilar in construction to the TEFC
m achine. The m ain points of difference are:
Special attention to air gap concentricity and clearance
of all rotating parts
C om ponents subject to im pact test
M axim um internal or external surface tem perature T3
Term inal block m aterial to ensure anti-tracking
Special term inal block to stop creepage.
It can be observed that m any of the above Ex n features
are sim ilar to type Ex e except that the standard outputs
are obtained from these m otors,i.e.no de-rating is involved.
Because Ex n m otors are used in Zone 2 sem i-hazardous
locations, internal and external surfaces are lim ited to T3 at all
tim es except during the starting period.
DUST-EXCLUDING IGNITION-PROOF DIP
These m otors are built to exclude dust and to prevent, sparks
or heat otherw ise generated or liberated inside the enclosure
to cause ignition of exterior accum ulations or atm ospheric
suspensions of a speci c dust on or in the vicinity of the
enclosure.
D ust is excluded from the m otor and term inal box enclosure
and the exterior tem perature is kept below the ignition
tem perature of a dust cloud or layer,up to 5m m thick.A s a
rule dust layering should be avoided.
Exam ples of such dusts are w ood, starch, coal dust and grain
dusts including our, cocoa, sugar,m ilk pow der and tea,as w ell
as various m etals and chem icals including bronze, zinc, sulphur
and toner.
It should be noted that the distinction betw een dust types
does not affect the selection of equipm ent for dust areas.

the sam e grease type.
Note: Excess lubrication and/or incorrect grease
type maycause an increase in bearingtemperature.
This maylead to an increased risk of premature
bearingfailure.
Note: When regreasinga runningmotor ensure
all safetyprecautions are observed.Ensure that the
motor runs for a sufcient time to allowthe used
grease to purge before the exit ports are reclosed.
