Desert survival
Where is the camp?
Luke and Sallys parents
work in Mali. They track
the desert elephants.
The children are on
their way to spend
the holidays with their
parents. Its too late to
continue the journey
tonight. They stop
and light a fre.
Sally and Luke decide to climb
the dune. They dont notice
the clouds on the horizon.
Look! That cant be fog!
Oh no! Its a
sand storm. Quick!
Lets go back.
Suddenly there is sand
fying everywhere.
The children shelter
behind some rocks.
Soon its dark and they
fall asleep. They wake up
the next morning and look
for the camp. They can
only see desert. The children
are lost, so they look
for the sand dune.
Its north of here,
over that sand dune.
Is that the right
sand dune?
I dont know. Sand
dunes move in the wind.

So they stay by the rocks
and wait. They make a small
tent with their jackets and

backpacks. The children
shelter from the sun and ration
their water. They wait for
the stars to appear.
There it is! The pole
star is always
in the same place.
Yes! And it points north.
Come on!
The children walk north
for two hours. Then they hear a
vehicle and they see some car lights.
They start shouting and waving.
But nobody can hear or see them.
The rescue party is there
very soon and the childrens
parents are with them.
Ive got an idea. Give me
the torch! Three short,
three long and three short.
SOS! Thats
