GENERAL INFORMATION

Introduction

1.1 High Volume Samplers are the basic instruments used to monitor Ambient Air Quality and
Pollution. They are in widespread use all over the world to measure air pollution in industrial
areas, urban areas, on the shop floor, near monuments and other sensitive areas. The High
Volume Sampler is a vital tool for studies relating the impact of industrialization to the air
environment, and for work relating diseases of the respiratory system to air pollution.

In these samplers, air-borne particulates are measured by passing air at a high flow-rate of
1.1 to 1.7 cubic meters per minute through a high efficiency filter paper which retains the
particles. The instrument measures the volume of air sampled, while the amount of
particulates collected is determined by measuring the change in weight of the filter paper as
a consequence of the sampling. The passage for air reaching the filter is designed to
prevent heavier settlable dust particles from reaching the filter. Hence High Volume
Samplers measure concentration of Suspended Particulate Matter (SPM) in atmospheric air.

Often High Volume Samplers are also fitted with absorbers which would sample pollutants.
Here the air is passed through chemicals that would absorb specific gases, and the
atmospheric concentration of gaseous pollutants is determined by chemical analysis of
absorbing solutions.

1.2 ENVIROTECHS APM 430 Dwarf High Volume Sampler is an improved version of the APM
415 Sampler, and it performs all the functions of the APM 415 with greater precision and
operational ease.

Main Additional Features

1. No need of keep track of carbon brushes thus eliminating unnecessary breakdowns and
minimize running cost.

Existing features which make the APM 430 superior to any other Indian High Volume
Sampler (including the ENVIROTECH APM 415) are:

Unique flow measuring system using an Orifice Plate incorporated in the Filter Holder
casting ensures an exact measurement of the air passing through the filter, with
minimum possibility of leakages, or extraneous air flows, affecting the flow readings.


Special hinge design allows easy separation of gable roof from the main housing
making the system more rugged and compact for transportation.


The system has been simplified by making the main unit of the APM 430 essentially
a particulate sampling system which alone needs the high flow rate. The gaseous
sampling, which requires only a few LPM of air flow, is performed through an
attachable subsidiary unit, the APM 411. Keeping the gaseous sampling module
outside the main unit of the APM 430 has the advantages of :
Easy manipulation of Impingers.

Possibility of using ice or cold water bath around the impingers for complete
absorption of sparsely soluble gases.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION

2.1 ENVIROTECH'S APM-430 High Volume Sampler is a basic instrument used primarily for
measuring concentration of suspended particulate matter in atmospheric air. By definition,
suspended particulates are too small in size to have an appreciable falling velocity and are
likely to remain in the atmosphere for significant periods of time. These particulates usually
range from 1 micron to approximately 100 microns in size and may be caused by a variety of
processes such as incomplete combustion of solid, liquid, or gaseous fuels, wastes from
metallurgical, chemical and refining operations, iceneration, etc. Moreover, natural sources
also contribute suspended materials like spores, salt water spray and pollens.

2.2 High Volume Sampling is an internationally accepted standard technique for monitoring the
concentration of suspended particulates. In these systems a large volume (1500 cubic
meters) of atmospheric air is passed through a suitable filter medium over a period of upto
24 hours. They will thus yield measurable dust samples in areas with dust levels as low as
one microgram per cubic meter of air. However, where dust concentrations are high, shorter
sampling times may suffice.

Measurement of Particulate Concentrations

2.3 The mass concentration of suspended particulates in ambient air, expressed in micrograms
per cubic meter, is calculated by measuring the mass of collected particulates and the
volume of air sampled.

In APM 430, the flow rate of air passing through the filter is monitored by measuring the
pressure drop across an Orifice Plate placed between the filter holder and the blower. The
scale of the manometer used to measure the pressure drop is calibrated in air flow units of
cubic meters per minute. A Time Totalizer records the time in minutes/hours for which the
system has sampled air. Hence the volume of air sampled is known.

The mass of particulates collected is measured gravimetrically, using a balance capable of
reliable measurement to the nearest milligram.

For identification of trace quantities of specific elements or compounds the collected dust
may be analysed using standard techniques like Electron Microscopes, Atomic-Absorption,
Infra-red Spectroscope, etc.

One must remember, however, that particualte matter which is oily, such as wood smoke or
photochemical smog, may block the filter and cause a rapid decrease in air flow at a non-
uniform rate. Even fog or high humidity can severely reduce the air flow through the filter
since even though glass fibre filters are insensitive to changes in relative humidity, the
collected particulates may be hygroscopic. Hence, it is recommended that filter mediums
must be carefully conditioned, both before and after sampling, prior to the measurement of
their weight.

Measurement of Gaseous Pollutants

2.4 The APM 430 Sampler is designed to monitor only the concentration of suspended
particulates in atmospheric air, and the APM 411 gaseous sampling attachment must be
used if gaseous pollutants are also to be monitored. An attempt has been made to make the
two units as independent of each other as possible. Hence, users who are not interested in
gaseous pollutants need not acquire the APM 411 attachment. However, each APM 430
system is provided with all the fixtures needed for using the gaseous sampling attachment,
so that the APM 411 system can be fitted at any stage.

2.5 APM 411 gaseous sampler uses wet chemical methods for the absorption and detection of
gaseous pollutants. Hence, atmospheric air must be passed through absorbers containing
suitable reagents which would absorb relevant gases like Sulphur dioxide, Nitrogen oxides,
Hydrogen sulphides, etc. The absorbing reagents must be analysed in a laboratory to work
out the quantity of gas absorbed.

The APM 411 system has been provided with a set of four midget impingers for gaseous
sampling. A gas manifold with separate flow control valves allows independent flow rates to
be set in individual impingers. A flow-meter has been incorporated which allows a precise
measurement of sampling rate when the system is being set up. The impingers have been
kept in an ice-tray to improve the absorption efficiency of the system and prevent loss of
absorbers by evaporation.

With a little care in the selection of chemicals, gas concentrations upto 5 micrograms/meter
cube of air can be routinely measured. Indeed, this wet chemical method is the reference
standard recommended by leading bodies like the World Health Organisation and the
American Environment Protection Agency (EPA).

INSTALLATION
The APM 430

3.1 Unpack the packing case containing the High Volume Sampler after ensuring that the
instrument is UPRIGHT as per the markings on the carton. Check that all the items, as per
the packing list, are undamaged. In case of damage, retain the packing case and inform
VAYUBODHAN.

3.2 The APM 430 Sampler comes to you pre-wired and tested, ready to be used except for the
gable roof which is detached for safe transit. The roof is attached to the main unit by two
hinges located near the top of the rear side. One portion of the hinge is mounted on the
sampler while the other is bolted to the roof. The connecting pins are inserted in the
roof-portion of the hinges.

To install the roof, unscrew the knurled screw from left side of pins. Hold the roof
from near the top of main unit as shown in Drg. No. 40024-00 and slide it to left so that
pins slide inside the bore of rear portion of both hinges. Screw back the knurled
screws from left side so that the roof may not come [Link] roof is now installed.
Check for free operation of the roof.

Whenever you transport the Sampler to the field, remove the roof assembly for safe and
easy transit.

3.3 Before connecting mains power to the equipment, check the following:
(a) Switch is in its OFF position.

3.4 Connect Power to the instrument using the mains chord provided under the cabinet. The Left
side neon lamp will glow indicating that the system is connected to a 220 V.A.C. supply. If
the neon lamp fails to glow even though the equipment is connected to a live mains outlet,
follow trouble-shooting instructions (page 21).

The Blower will come on drawing air through the filter holder. If the system fails to operate,
follow trouble-shooting instructions on page 21. If the system has responded normally to all
the controls described above, the APM 430 is ready for use.

The APM 411

3.6 Unpack the APM 411 Sampler. The ice-tray and the glass impingers are wrapped
separately, but would be placed inside the Sampler Cabinet. Check that the four 35 ml
impingers supplied with the equipment are undamaged. Report damages to VAYUBODHAN
immediately. After unpacking, the impingers should be placed in the ice tray.

As indicated in Drg No.40025-00 the APM 411 gaseous sampling attachment is to be
mounted on the right side of the APM 430 Sampler. To mount the APM 411 system, special
bolts have been provided on the side of the High Volume Sampler, while suitable mounting
holes have been made in the back plate of the APM 411. The nozzle in the middle of the
mounting bolts provides the suction for gaseous sampling and should be connected to the
common point of the gas manifold, as indicated in the schematic diagram of Drg No.43005-
00.

The following procedure is to be adopted for installation of the APM 411 :

Open the Brass nuts covering the mounting bolts.

Position the Gas Sampler so that the picture hook-shaped mounting holes are in front of the
mounting bolts as shown in Drg. No. 40025-00.

Allow the Gas Sampler to hang on the mounting Bolt heads.

Cover the Bolt-heads with the Brass nuts provided to firmly lock the gaseous sampling
attachment in place.

Connect the flexible pipe attached to the Gas manifold common point (outlet), to the suction
nozzle mounted on the APM 430 Sampler.

Place the ice-tray with impingers in the gas sampler cabinet.

The outlet pipe of each impinger must be connected to individual flow control valves of the
gas manifold. The system allows all four impingers to be connected in parallel form and to
have independent flows. However, if required by the sampling scheme, a sampling train of
two or more impingers in series could be formed by connecting the outlet of the first impinger
to the inlet of the next one and the outlet of the last impinger to the flow control valve. To
minimize handling of glassware, the flexible pipes must be connected to each impinger only
after suitable reagents have been filled in them.

OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
Selection of Sampling Site

4.1 The High Volume Sampler is usually operated at ground level. In normal usage it is never
operated more than 15 meters above ground level. In order to obtain a representative
sample, the Sampler should not be positioned near a wall or other obstructions that would
prevent free air flow. In excessively turbulent conditions or in the presence of strong surface
winds or otherwise inclement weather, the sampling rate is likely to decrease rapidly and
perhaps in a non-linear fashion due to filter choking. If the sampler is operating in the vicinity
of a source, day-to-day variations in the measurement are expected due to varying
meteorological conditions and changing atmospheric phenomena, like wind speed and
direction, disperal, diffusion, etc.

Selection of Filter Medium

4.2 For most cases where interest is limited to a gravimetric determination of the total
suspended particulate concentration, glass microfibre filters having a low resistance to
airflow, a low affinity for moisture and a 98% collection efficiency for particles of 0.5 micron
or larger size are suitable. However, where further analysis of the particulates is to be
attempted to detect specific elements/radicals, care should be taken to choose special filter
mediums having a low background concentration of the substances of interest. For instance,
special grades of glass microfibre filters are available which have a controlled and low
concentration of metals like Iron, Zinc, Cadmium, Lead, Arsenic, Nickel, etc.

Preparing the Filter

4.3 Prior to use, expose each filter to a light source and inspect for pinholes, particles and other
imperfections. Filters with visible defects should not be used. A small brush is often used to
remove stray particles adhering to the surface of new filters. Always handle filter papers from
their edges and do not crease or fold the filter medium prior to use.

Both blank and samples should be conditioned at 20 to 25 degrees Centigrade, and relative
humidity below 50% for at least 16 hours prior to weighing.

It is usual to put an identification number and date of sampling on the filters. Weigh the filters
to the nearest milligram and record the weight and filter identification number.

Installation of the Filter

4.4 Always install or remove the filter only when the Sampler is OFF. Open the gable roof of the
shelter, loosen the wing nuts and remove the face plate from the filter holder. Place a
numbered, pre-weighed filter in position with its rough side up. Replace the face plate
without disturbing the filter and fasten securely. Under tightening will allow air leakage, over
tightening will damage the rubber face plate gasket. A very light application of talcum
powder may be used on the rubber gasket to prevent the filter from sticking. Close the roof
of the shelter.

Operation of the Orifice Meter

4.5 The Orifice meter is really a differential manometer used to measure the pressure drop
across an Orifice Plate. It uses distilled water as the indicating fluid which must be topped up
from time to time. The brass screw mounted on the meter plate is a filling plug which must
be opened to fill in the manometer fluid. Use the syringe provided with the instrument to fill
distilled water upto the zero mark on the meter scale. When adequate fluid has been filled
into the system, close the filling plug. Do not over tighten the plug since it would damage its
seal ring. A drain plug has been provided on left side of cover in order to drain out excessive
water.

4.6 TIMER OPERATION


4.7 SETTING UP THE TIMER FOR MANUAL OPERATION

Pullout all the pins on the timing dial outwards. Use the main ON-OFF switch on the instrument
panel / manometer plate to manually switch the blower ON or OFF. (Note : with the pins in
outward positions, the timer remains connected to the mains but is unable to control operation of
the Sampler.)

4.8 SETTING UP THE TIMER FOR AUTOMATIC OPERATION

Pull outwards all the pins located on the timing wheel. Rotate the wheel clockwise until it is
synchronized with the real time of the day. e.g. Rotate the timing wheel clock-wise until the
number aligned to the pointer (marked as a triangle- ) on the center wheel corresponds to the
real time of the day. For example, if the actual time is 10 A.M., the pointer should be aligned to
number 10. Similarly, if the actual time is 3 P.M. the pointer should be aligned to
number 15. At this position the timer is ON as in the manual position. Decide the OFF time and
push all the pins on dial from selected OFF time to the start time inwards. This will switch off the
blower at desired time. The sampler may now be left unattended and will automatically operate for
the desired time. (Caution : The timing wheel provides and endless loop, and so the timer will
repeat the operation after 24 hours, unless the sampler is externally switched off.)

Each pins of the tuning dial corresponds to approximately 15 minutes. It enables to select many
ON time and OFF time intervals as per requirement.

4.9 Caution :

In case the timer function not to be use then pullout all the pins on the timing dial outwards.

Using the Time Totalizer

4.10 The Time Totalizer uses a clock motor to drive a geared numerical display. As shown in Drg
No 43015-00, the system has been wired so that it operates only when the heavy duty
blower receives power. Hence its display indicates the true time, in minutes/hours for which
the Sampler has sampled atmospheric air.
The Time Totalizer performs two important functions :
(a) it keeps check on the actual sampling time when the instrument is operated, and
(b) it facilitates timely preventive maintenance.

Time Totalizer readings must be noted before and after each air-sampling, so that the exact
duration of the sampling can be worked out. The same readings can be used to determine
when the Orifice-meter system is due for cleaning. As such, we strongly recommend that
Time-Totalizer readings be recorded in the form of a Log and used to establish a preventive
maintenance schedule as per maintenance instructions given in section 5 of the manual.

4.11 In the event of power failure, both the Timer and Time Totalizer (as also the Sampler) stops.
Hence, when power is restored, the Sampler will continue to operate for the balance time
period set on the Timer. It will, however, loose synchronicity with the real time of the day.
The Time Totalizer will still indicate the actual number of hours and fraction of hours (i.e.,
....x [Link] hrs) for which the Sampler has operated.

Operation of the APM 411 Gaseous Sampling Attachment

4.12 As described in Section 2.5, the APM 411 system uses wet chemical methods to absorb
various gaseous pollutants. Suitable absorbing solutions and analy|tical methods must be
adopted as per recommendations of ISI (IS 5182) or the Pollution Control Boards.

Before operation of the system, check that it has been properly installed as per instructions
given in Section 3.6.

Fill approximately 20 ml of absorbing reagent in each impinger as per the sampling plan
adopted. Place the impingers in the ice tray. We strongly recommend that cold water or
crushed ice be placed around the impingers in the ice tray, so that a high absorption
efficiency is maintained and evaporative losses of absorbers are minimised.

Place the loaded ice-tray in the APM 411 sampler.

Connect the impinger outlet to individual inlets of the gas manifold. In case the sampling
plan requires some impingers in series, the corresponding manifold inlet would remain free.

Follow start-up sequence given in Section 4.13 to get the Blower of the APM 430 ON.

Connect the flexible pipe of the flowmeter to the inlet of the first impinger and adjust the flow
by rotating the corresponding manifold pin. A screw driver set is supplied with the instrument
for this purpose. Rotation of the pin in the anti-clockwise direction will increase the flow,
while a clockwise rotation will shut-off the valve.

Disconnect the flowmeter pipe from the first impinger and repeat the procedure until the
airflows have been set in all the impingers.

Note down the Time-totalizer reading.
At the time of Sampler shut-off, note the Time Totalizer reading again. The difference of
Time-Totalizer readings gives the gaseous sampling time, which must be multiplied with
individual flow rates to determine the volume of air sampled in each impinger.

Sampler Start-up Sequence

4.13 Before commencing any air sampling operations using the APM 430 High Volume Air
Sampler, check the following :

(1) The system is suitably located as per section 4.1
(2) A fresh, pre-weighed filter is installed in the filter holder.
(3) The fluid in the orifice meter is at Zero level.
(4) In case both particulate and gaseous pollutants are to be sampled, check that
impingers with suitable reagents are in place and are connected as per Section 4.12. If
only suspended particulates are to be sampled, the entire APM 411 gaseous sampling
attachment can be removed.

Connect the mains chord of the sampler to a live 220 V.A.C. outlet. Switch on the machine.

Allow the Blower to run for a minute so that it attains full speed and then record the sampling
rate indicated by the orifice meter. In case gases are also to be sampled, set the desired
flowrates (for gaseous sampling) using the needle valves of the gas manifold. Record the
sampling rates for gases.

Sampler Shut-off Sequence

4.14 (1) Record the flow-rate indicated by the orifice meter.
(2) Record the flow-rate indicated by the rotameter (for gaseous sampling).
(3) In case the system was operating under the control of the Timer and the blower has
already been shut off, restart the blower using the ON-OFF switch and allow the
flow rate to stabilize for a minute before recording the flow rates mentioned
above.
(4) Switch off the sampler using the MCB switch.
(5) Record the final sampling time indicated by the Time Totalizer.
(6) Open the filter-holder and carefully remove the FilterPaper. Fold the paper along its
length so that the soiled sides are in contact and are facing inwards. Store the filter
paper in a clean envelope.
(7) Remove the Sampler from the Sampling Site to a safe storage area.

Maintenance of Blower

5.1 Check belt of blower once in six month, if found loose kindly tighten it.

Maintenance of the Manometer Assembly

5.2 The manometer assembly uses distilled water as a manometer fluid. With time the water
acquires residues and a precipitate forms which tends to clog the nozzles connecting the
manometer tank to the manometer tube. To remove the precipitate and other deposits the
manometer must be flushed out periodically (at least once in three months). If the instrument
is expected to remain in disuse for two weeks or more it is recommended that the water be
drained out from the manometer tank to avoid formation of the precipitate. To flush and
clean the manometer assembly follow the steps given below:

a. Open the filling plug screw and drain plug screw. Take a silicone pipe and blow
into filling plug three four times. Hold the pipe from the glass tube pointing
downwards and away from the instrument and blow into the pipe connected to the
tank. The old water and residues will be drained out from the system.

b. Refill the manometer with fresh distilled water (through the filing plug) and drain it
as above. Repeat the process several times to thoroughly flush out any residues.

c. Fill fresh distilled water prior to use of the instrument.

Maintenance Of Gaskets and O-Rings

5.3 Once every year check for cracks and leaks in the various rubber gaskets and O-Rings. With
age, the silicone pipes and other rubber parts will tend to undergo plastic deformation and
also become stiff. Change any pipes which have become loose at the ends. The face plate
gasket of the filter holder needs replacement if the edge of the dust deposited after sampling
is no longer sharp. This gasket is glued to the top plate of the filter holder but can be
removed by applying some force on the rubber. New gaskets are availale as standard
spares.

In brief follow the given instructions for avoiding unnecessary breakdowns.

a. The timer has been set properly.
b. The filter paper has been placed on the wire mesh.
c. The water column is clean and is filled up upto zero mark.
d. Top plate has been sufficiently tightened.
e. Ice has been put in the ice tray (in case of APM 411 only).

The following is a list of typical faults that may be encountered in the use of the High Volume
Sampler. In case a fault persists after following the recommended remedies contact us.
