HANDWRITING AND BIKE RIDING - MORE IN COMMON THAN YOU THINK
We often think that messy handwriting is a result of kids who rush through their work and
arent concentrating on what they are doing. For kids who are just learning to write you
obviously need to pay attention to the steps of writing, but once you have learnt these
your hand should just automatically do it. Its like tying your shoelaces, riding a bike or
driving a car. Once youve mastered the skills you dont think about telling your body what
to do, it just does it.
To be fast, neat and legible requires lots of practice. The big muscles of the arm help guide
the hand across the page, and the small muscles of the hand work hard to constantly
change directions for letter formation. Think about cursive handwriting and you get the
idea of how important these skills are.
We are talking about muscles, so its like any gym workout, the more you use them the
stronger they get. Problem being that kids with handwriting difficulties generally dislike
practicing handwriting - its just hard work. These worksheets were designed to keep kids
interested in activities that improve their pencil control. The confidence that comes with
greater pencil control often results in motivation to write longer stories and answers in class.

TIPS FOR HELPING
OTHER IDEAS
Markers with a thick tip are good
to start with as they cover most of the line.
Thin tips can get frustrating for some kids.
If your child gets confused with some
of the patterns demonstrate for them.
This is important for loop patterns.
Take turns by doing one line each
for kids who are getting tired or
overloaded.
The page needs to be slightly turned when
writing. This allows the arm to more
easily move from left to right across the page.

THE PROBLEM WITH HANDWRITING IS THAT ITS NOT JUST ABOUT THE ALPHABET
A lot of kids can be really neat when they have to, they slow down and just seem to focus
on the shape and size of their letters. But when you look at their school work, its all over
the place. Handwriting is not just about being able to form the letters of the alphabet. Its
about being able to write whilst thinking about spelling, grammar and the content of
what you are actually supposed to be writing in the first place. This is where a lot of kids
get stuck!
Handwriting fluency is not just about the pencil control needed but about being able to
constantly change directions based on the words you are spelling and how quickly you
need to write. If you were writing the same word over and over again it would be easy -
your hand takes over and does it automatically.
These worksheets are designed to take it to the next level. To decrease how much work
goes into handwriting by making the skills automatic. Your hand just does what its
supposed to, in an efficient way which results in less fatigue and neater overall work. These
worksheets were designed to keep kids interested in activities that improve their pencil
control. The confidence that comes with greater pencil control often results in motivation
to write longer stories and answers in class.

Where do I start with my child?
The pages are ordered from easy to hard. Start from the
begining or choose the pages your child is interested in. It is
really important that you dont let your child turn the paper
to extreme angles whilst they are working. This is the bodys
way of making the work easier.
Try different positions, lie on the floor, up on an easel or whiteboard
To make it really hard use small broken pieces of crayons in your fingertips
to complete the patterns
