PCM/Dolby digital compatible. The following table shows the audio inputs
and the audio format which are present at the coaxial Audio Output.
Both the HDMI and DVI formats contain digital video. In the case of the
HDMI format the audio is also digital and is part of the video and audio
data stream over the single HDMI connection. In contrast, the DVI format
contains only digital video in its data stream. The audio is sent over a
separate red and white wired analog audio connection. Furthermore, a
DVI to HDMI adapter is required to connect the DVI connector to the
HDMI connector.
PC Video & Audio Input
The MA1 chassis models (KDl-26M3000 & ML130, KDL-32M3000 &
ML130 and KDL-37M3000) have a Personal Computer Input (PC-IN),
which connects directly to the PC 15 pin DIN connector (HD15 connector).
Once connected the TV functions as a video monitor and audio output
(separate Stereo Mini Plug) for the PC. There is a complete table of PC
Input Signal Compatibility on Page 18 in the Owners Manual.

LCD Panel Assembly
The LCD Panel Assembly includes the LCD Panel, TCON, and Backlight
Lamps.
The LCD Panel contains the actual liquid crystals, color lters, and
polarizers. The liquid crystals are manipulated by the applied voltage to
pass a specic amount of light - from the backlight- depending on the level
of voltage applied. The panel resolution on all the MA1 chassis models is
1366 X 768 lines. These considered 720P High-Denition models.
The TCON performs all the control, timing, charge, and discharge functions
driving the operation of the LCD Panel.
The Backlight Lamps generate the white light that passes through the
liquid crystals in the LCD Panel.

3. Power Supply System
Overall System Description
Reference Figures 3-1 & 3-2
The power supply system for the MA1 chassis LCD TV models consists of
the Standby (STBY) 3.3V Power Supply, Main Power Supply, Power
Factor Control (PFC) circuit, and the Inrush relay RY6000. Aside from
various regulator circuits, all power supply circuits are contained on the
G1M-Board (26 & 32) or G5M-Board (37).
Both the Standby 3.3V and Main Power Supplies are switch-mode power
supplies. The conguration and operation using the converter ICs are
similar to previous models.
The AC (110V) is suppied through the main fuse F6000 and an AC line
lter on the G1M or G5M board and is applied directly to the Inrush Relay
RY6000 & Inrush Resistor R6102 and the Standby 3.3V converter
IC6001 on the G1M or G5M board. Consequently, as long as the TV
is plugged into the AC outlet the Standby 3.3V circuit is activated and
supplying STBY 3.3V to Main Microprocessor (BM-Board) and IR Sensor
(HM3-Board). The Main Microprocessor and IR Sensor are therefore
placed in standby mode waiting for an ON command from the remote
control or the TV top panel Power button.
In the standby mode the AC power is supplied to the Standby and Main
power supplies through the Inrush resistor R6102. The Inrush relay
contacts are open. The Inrush resistor limits the initial current surge,
which occurs when power is rst applied to the TV circuits.
To activate the Inrush relay 3.3V is sent by the Main Microprocessor
to one side of the relay after an ON command is received from the
remote controller or front panel power button. One side of the relay coil
is connected to ground and the other side receives the POWER ON
(3.3V) signal (CN6201/pin 11) through transistor Q6000 from the Main
Microprocessor. The Inrush Relay contacts close and bypass the Inrush
resistor to pass AC power directly to the Main Power Supply.
Standby 3.3V power supply to IC6100 & PFC. The 19V is used as the
Main VCC in the ON mode for both circuits. IC6100 develops and supplies
all other operating voltages (12V, 24V, AU15V) throughout the television
as shown on Figure 3-1 for the 37. An additional 5V is developed on the
G1M-Board for the 26 and 32 TVs (Ref. Fig. 3-2).
The 24V at CN6203 is used to power the Backlight Inverter board. The
Inverter converters (or Inverters) the 24V using an oscillator circuit into
between 1700Vrms to 2400Vrms to drive the Cold Cathode Fluorescent
Lamp assembly.
There are additional regulator circuits located on the BM-Board.
However, each regulator can be traced back to one of the Main power
supply secondary voltages from the G1M or G5M board (Ref. Fig.s 31 & 3-2). The 12V secondary voltages supplies all the regulators on
the 37 TV. The 12V and the 5V supplies the regulators on the 26 and
32 TVs. The source of regulator supply voltage is good information
when troubleshooting a power supply problem, which we will discuss in
the coming troubleshooting section. You will always want to check the
regulator supply voltage before replacing the BM-Board for a suspected
regulator failure.
The power supply and regulator circuits are practical identical between
the 37 and the 26 & 32 TVs. The differences are as follows
Additional 5V supply from G1M-Board for 26 and 32
Q4018 regulator is supplied by the 5V on the 26 and 32
Panel voltages are 12V & 3.3V for 37
Panel voltage is 5V only for the 26 and 32
The Main Power Supply IC6002 is turned on through the PH6002 and
the subsequent switching circuit. Approximately 19V is supplied from the
CTV-44

3. Power Supply System
Troubleshooting Power Supply Failures
An actual power supply failure (G1M-Board or G5M-Board failure) will
cause the TV to exhibit one of the two following symptoms.
Dead Set
2X Protection Mode Blink Pattern
5X Protection Mode Blink Pattern (26 & 32 Only)
No video
Dead Set
If the AC is present at CN6102/pins 1 & 2 then the next step is conrm
a good F6000 and that the Standby 3.3V power supply is operating.
Measure the voltage level at CN6201/pin 13 to conrm the standby
power supply output. The voltage level at the test point should be 3.3V
as long as AC power is applied to the TV. If the 3.3V is missing and AC
power is applied to the CN6102/pins 1 & 2 then the G1M or G5M board is
defective.
There is one defect not associated with the G1M or G5M board that can
cause a Dead Set condition, and that is a defective Main microprocessor
on the BM-Board. Although this is highly unlikely and a rare defect, it
should be considered when troubleshooting a Dead Set condition. If the
AC power is applied to the G1M or G5M board and the Standby 5V power
supply is operating properly then the problem may be a defective Main
microprocessor. In this case the BM-Board needs to be replaced.
In a dead set condition, no relay click will be heard and there will be
no green POWER LED illumination when a power ON command is
received from the Power button on the front panel or remote controller.
One of the following failures has occurred.
Faulty AC outlet
Damage Power Cord
Open Main AC fuse F6000
Defective Standby 3.3V Power Supply (G1M or G5M board)
Defective TV Microprocessor (BM-Board)
The rst two bullets shown are indicating that AC power is not getting
to the G1M or G5M board. Conrm that the listed components and
connections are okay, and repair as needed.
You can quickly determine if AC power is applied to the G1M or G5M
board by measuring the voltage level across CN6102/pins 1 & 2. The
voltage level should be 110VAC. If the AC power is missing one of the
components in the rst two bullets listed is defective.

2X or 5X Protection Mode Blink Pattern
A G1M or G5M board failure will cause one of the following protection
mode blink patterns. The relay will activate and the Power LED will
illuminate green before the unit goes into the protection mode.
2 Blink Pattern (2X)
5 Blink Pattern (5X)
The 2 Blink Pattern Indicates a missing 12V output condition. This
protection mode basically indicates a general main power supply failure,
which can be caused by one of the following failures
Defective Inrush Relay (G1M or G5M board)
Defective IC6100 Main Power Supply (G1M or G5M board)
You can conrm this condition exists by placing a voltmeter probe at
CN6202/pin 4-6 and measure the 12V before shutdown. If the voltage
level remains at 0V before shutdown then the G1M or G5M board is
possibly defective. Before replacing the G1M or G5M board make the
following checks.
1) If no relay click is heard before shutdown conrm that the POWER-ON
voltage from the Main Microprocessor (BM-Board) is present at CN6201/
pin 11. The loss of this voltage will cause a 2X symptom.
You can conrm a failure of the Main power supply circuit (IC6002) 12V
secondary by conrming the presence of the STBY 3.3V at CN6201/pin
13. If the 3.3V is present then that conrms the presence DC input supply
to IC6002.
Notice that both the Main and Standby power supply circuits share the
same DC input supply coming from D6015 (Ref. Fig. 3-1 & 3-2).
The 5 Blink Pattern Indicates a missing 5V output condition (26 & 32
Only). This protection mode basically indicates a main power supply
(IC6002) failure. The 5V secondary voltage is missing. Check for the
5V at CN6202/pin 5. If the level is 0V at power On then the main power
supply has failed. However, if the level approaches 5V before shut OFF
then the Main microprocessor is the possible defective component.
No Video
A loss of 24V from the G1M-Board or G5M-Board can cause a No Video
& Audio OK condition. The 24V is the Backlight Inverter board supply
voltage. Although it is rare that only one output of a power supply will fail,
it should still be considered when troubleshooting a No Video condition.
The 24V output can be measured at CN6203/pins 2-5 (37) and on
CN6202/pins 2-5 (26 & 32). A ashlight can be used to conrm video is
being sent from the Bm-Board to the LCD Panel assembly. Shine the light
at various areas on the front of the LCD Panel. You should see video in
the lighted areas.
2) If the voltage level remains 0V (never approaches 3.3V) at power ON
then the Main Microprocessor is defective. Replace the BM-Board.
3) If the voltage level does approach 3.3V at power ON then the Main
Microprocessor is attempting to turn the TV On. However, the Inrush relay
is defective. Replace the G1M or G5M board.
4) If only two relay clicks are heard before shutdown and 2X indication
then the Inrush relay is turning On and OFF immediately due to a failure
in the Main power supply circuit. The 12V main power supply secondary
output is missing. Replace the G1M or G5M board.

4. Protection Circuits
Overall System Description
Reference Figures 4-1, 4-2, & 4-3
The protection circuits (aka. Self-diagnostics) for the MA1 Chassis
models monitor the following circuits and conditions in and around the
TV for abnormalities. If a failure occurs the Red TIMER LED on the front
panel will blink a unique pattern (e.g. 2X) depending on the failure that
has occurred.
24V & 12V OVP (2X Red Timer LED Blink Pattern)
12V LVP (2X Red Timer LED Blink Pattern)
D1.0V & D1.8V LVP (3X Red Timer LED Blink Pattern)
D3.3V LVP (4X Red Timer LED Blink Pattern)
Panel V LVP (5X Red Timer LED Blink Pattern)
Inverter Board (6X) Not Active for all Models
External Temperature (7X Red Timer LED Blink Pattern)
Audio Output (8X Red Timer LED Blink Pattern)
The Main microprocessor monitors all protection circuits. The Protection
Mode system employs seven unique RED Timer LED blink patterns to
identify one of the circuit failures listed in the previous bullet list. Notice that
in some cases the same blink pattern will occur for different conditions,
in these cases you will apply further troubleshooting procedures to locate
the exact area of the failure.
12V LVP Protect (2X Red LED Blink Pattern)
The Main microprocessor directly monitors the 12V output of IC6002
on the G1M or G5M board. The 12V is connected to a voltage divider
consisting of R3031, R3034, and R3037 on the BM-Board. The top of
R3037 is connected to the Main microprocessor IC3011/pin 7. In normal
operation the voltage level at pin 7 is 3.1V. The 12V is monitored for a
CTV-44
low-voltage condition. Therefore, if the 12V is missing or excessively low
the TV will shutdown and a 2X blink pattern on the Red Timer LED will
occur.
24V & 12V OVP Protect (2X Red LED Blink Pattern)
These two protection circuits monitor the 12V and 24V Main power supply
secondary outputs for an over voltage condition (OVP).
Both outputs are connected to an individual Zener diode and a single
Latch circuit. The 12V output is connected to the cathode of D6051 - a
15V Zener diode. The 24V output is connected to the cathode of D6050
- a 27V Zener diode. The anodes of both Zener diodes are connected to
the same latch circuit consisting of Q6016 & Q6017.
Therefore, if either the 12V output exceeds 15V or the 24V output exceeds
27V the particular Zener diode will activate and a high will be applied to
the latch circuit. Both latch transistors are turned ON and the POWER-ON
line from the Main microprocessor is pulled low. The Main Power supply
is shut OFF and the Main microprocessor detects the loss of the 12V and
a 2X blink pattern on the Red Timer LED will occur.
D1.0V & D1.8V LVP (3X Red LED Blink Pattern)
The Main microprocessor monitors the D1.0V output of IC7004 voltage
regulator and the D1.8V output of IC7006 voltage regulator. The D1.0V is
rst applied to the transistor circuit consisting of Q4001 and Q4002. The
collector of Q4002 is connected to the Main Microprocessor IC3011/pin 47.
The D1.8V is rst applied to the transistor circuit consisting of Q4017 and
Q4016. The collector of Q4016 is connected to the Main Microprocessor
IC3011/pin 47.In normal operation the voltage level at pin 47 is 3.1V. A
loss of the D1.0V or D1.8V will cause the associate transistors to toggle
and pull pin 47 low (0V). The TV will shutdown and a 3X blink pattern on
the Red Timer LED will occur.
D3.3V LVP (4X Red LED Blink Pattern)
The Main microprocessor monitors the D3.3V output of IC7005 voltage
regulator. The D3.3V is rst applied to a voltage divider circuit consisting
21
4. Protection Circuits
of R4008 and R4013. The top of R4013 is connected to the Main
Microprocessor IC3011/pin 28. In normal operation the voltage level at
pin 28 is 3.1V. A loss of the D3.3V will pull pin 28 low (0V). The TV will
shutdown and a 4X blink pattern on the Red Timer LED will occur.
Panel V LVP (5X Red LED Blink Pattern)
The Panel V is 5V for the 26 & 32 models, and 12V for the 37 model.
The Main microprocessor monitors the Panel V output of Q4018 voltage
regulator. The Panel V is rst applied to a voltage divider circuit consisting
of R4042 and R4043. The top of R4043 is connected to the Main
Microprocessor IC3011/pin 48 through R4067. In normal operation the
voltage level at pin 28 is 3.1V. A loss of the Panel V will pull pin 48 low
(0V). The TV will shutdown and a 5X blink pattern on the Red Timer LED
will occur.
Temperature Protect (7X Red LED Blink Pattern)
G5M board.
If any of these conditions are detected the protection circuits will alert
the Main microprocessor (IC30011/pin 16) of the failure and an 8X blink
pattern on the Red Timer LED will occur.
Error History Screen
The Error History Table is located in the Service Mode screen. The
Service Mode is access by pressing the following button sequence on the
remote controller.
Display > 5 > Vol+ > Power ON
This screen will appear.

Screen Reset
The temperature error protection circuit monitors for an excessive
temperature condition.
The temperature sensor IC3007 on the BM-Board monitors the local
ambient room temperature. The Main microprocessor regularly queries
IC3007 over the I2C bus for temperature data. The threshold is set to
approximately 47 degrees Celsius / 116 degrees Fahrenheit. IC3007 is
located directly above the digital coaxial output on the BM-Board.
When the temperature increases above the indicated temperature
threshold the TV will shutdown, and a 7X ash pattern on the Red Timer
LED will occur.
Audio Protect (8X Red LED Blink Pattern)
The protection circuit (Q2012, Q2013, Q2016, Q2017, and Q2018)
mounted on the BM-Board monitors the audio amplier outputs (speaker
lines) for the presence of a shorted condition or a DC voltage level.
A 8X protection mode will also occur for a loss of AU15V from the G1M or

Troubleshooting Protection Mode Conditions
12V LVP Protect (2X Red LED Blink Pattern)
Reference Figures 4-1 & 4-2
This protection mode simply monitors the 12V from the Main power supply
IC6002 on the G1M or G5M Board for a low (or missing) voltage level
condition.
If the 2X protection mode has occurred due to a low or missing 12V then
one of the following failures have occurred.
Inrush Relay Failure (26 & 32 Only)
Main Power Supply Failure (IC6002)
Main Microprocessor Failure (IC3011)
For the 26 and 32 models listen for the Inrush relay click before shut
down. If a relay click is heard then the Main microprocessor is sending the
POWER-ON command and the relay is activating. The most likely failure
is the Main power supply IC6002. To conrm this check for the 12V at
CN6202/pin 4. If the level is 0V before shut down IC6002 has failed. If the
level approaches 12V before shut down then the most likely failure is the
Main microprocessor IC3011.
If a relay is not heard before shut down then either the Inrush relay or
the Main microprocessor failed. To determine which failure has occurred
check for the POWER-ON voltage at CN6201/pin11. If the voltage level 0V
before shut down then the Main microprocessor has failed. If the voltage
level approaches 3V before shut down then the Inrush relay has failed.
For the 37 model a failed Inrush will not cause a 2X protection mode.
Therefore, listening for a relay click will not help when troubleshooting a
2X protection Mode on the 37 model.
If a 2X protection mode occurs on a 37 model either the Main Power
supply or the Main microprocessor has failed. To determine which failure
CTV-44
23
4. Protection Circuits
has occurred check for the 12V at CN6202/pin 4. If the level is 0V before
shut down IC6002 has failed. If the level approaches 12V before shut
down then the most likely failure is the Main microprocessor IC3011.
24V & 12V OVP Protect (2X Red LED Blink Pattern)
Reference Figures 4-1 & 4-2
These two protection circuits monitor the 12V and 24V Main power supply
secondary outputs for an over voltage condition. All circuitry is located on
the G1M or G5M board.
To determine if a 12V or 24V OVP failure is causing the 2X protection
mode you can monitor these two outputs before the TV shuts OFF. There
is approximately a 20 second window of time between TV turn ON and
shut OFF to monitor the outputs.
The 12V can be measure at CN6202/pin 4 and the 24V can be measured
at CN6203/pin 2 (37) or CN6202/pin 2 (26 & 32). If the 12V exceeds
15V or the 24V exceeds 27V before shut OFF then the Main power
supply is defective. If neither of the outputs exceed the designated
threshold (remain below 12V & 24V respectively) before shut OFF the
Main microprocessor is defective.
D1.0V & D1.8V LVP (3X Red LED Blink Pattern)
Reference Figures 4-1 & 4-2
These two protection circuits monitor the D1.0V and D1.8V regulator
outputs (IC7004 & IC7006 respectively) for a Low voltage (or missing)
condition.
D3.3V LVP (4X Red LED Blink Pattern)
Reference Figures 4-1 & 4-2
This protection circuit monitors the D3.3V regulator output (IC7005) for a
Low voltage (or missing) condition.
IC7005 is located on the BM-Board. In most cases, a 4X protection mode
will occur due to a defective IC7005 or open PS7001 and the BM-Board
will be replaced to x the problem. However, before replacing the BMBoard conrm the presence of 12V at CN6202/pin 4. The 12V is the input
voltage to the regulator. The presence of the 12V conrms a defective
BM-Board.
Panel V LVP (5X Red LED Blink Pattern)
Reference Figures 4-1 & 4-2
This protection circuit monitors the Panel 12V (37) and the Panel 5V (26
& 32) regulator output (Q4018) for a Low voltage (or missing) condition.
Q4018 is located on the BM-Board. In most cases, a 5X protection mode
will occur due to a defective Q4018 or open F4001 and the BM-Board
will need to be replaced to x the problem. However, before replacing the
BM-Board conrm the presence of 12V at CN6202/pin 4 (37) or the 5V
at CN6202/pin 5 (26 & 32). The 12V or the 5V is the input voltage to
the regulator. The presence of the 12V or 5V conrms a defective BMBoard.
Both IC7004 and IC7006 are located on the BM-Board. In most cases,
a 3X protection mode will occur due to a defective IC7004 or IC7006
or open PS7000 and the BM-Board will be replaced to x the problem.
However, before replacing the BM-Board conrm the presence of 12V
at CN6202/pin 4. The 12V is the input voltage for both regulators. The
presence of the 12V conrms a defective BM-Board.

Temperature Protect (7X Red LED Blink Pattern)
1) Main Microprocessor (BM-Board)
Reference Figure 4-3
2) Temperature Sensor IC3007 (BM-Board)
The TV does not display a temperature warning dialogue box before
shutting OFF and going into a 7X Timer LED blink pattern.
The main objective when a 7X blink pattern occurs is to determine which
of the following possible defects is causing the excessive temperature
condition.
1) Excessively Ambient Room Temperature
2) Dust or Debris Blocking the TV Ventilation Apertures
3) Defective Temperature Sensor IC3007
The rst step is to notice how long it takes the TV to shut OFF and trigger
a temperature (7X) failure.
If the TV has an actual excessive temperature condition it will take
a noticeably period of time to shut OFF and indicate a 7X protection
mode. This is because it will take time for the TV to heat up and for the
temperature sensor to detect the excessive temperature and shut the TV
OFF.
Check the following items:
The TV should not have located too close to any heating
elements.
The TV should be at least 4 inches of clearance around all sides
to ensure adequate ventilation.
Check that all Aperture areas are Clear of all Dust and Debris.
In either case the BM-Board must be replaced to x the problem.
Audio Output Protect (8X Red LED Blink Pattern)
Reference Figure 4-3
This protection circuit monitors the condition of the audio amplier output
connections and the loss of AU15V (Audio Output Amplier Power
Supply).
The protection mode occurs when one of the audio outputs is shorted or
if a DC voltage level is present. In either case the problem exists within
the audio circuit, which is located completely on the BM-Board.
Before replacing the BM-Board perform the following checks.
Check the AU15V at CN6201/pin 8. If 15V is present replace
the BM-Board. If the 15V is missing troubleshoot the G1M or
G5M board.
Check the speakers and/or speaker connections for damage.
The speakers should measure 8 ohms. Check all connectors
and wiring for damage. Replace and repair components
where needed.
If the TV still shuts down (8X), then the problem is with the Main
microprocessor, and consequently, the BM-Board must be replaced.
If the TV shuts OFF immediately (Not an Actual Excessive Temperature
Condition) after Power-ON then one of the following components has
failed.

5. Video Processing System
Overall System Description
Reference Figure 5-1
You can divide the Video Processing system into the following two
separate sections.
Video Switching & Processing Section (BM-Board)
Video Display Section (LCD Panel Assembly)
The BM-Board receives all analog and digital video inputs (Composite,
Component, HDMI, DVI, PC and Tuner RF), which are then applied to the
Xillion video switcher & video processor IC7300.
All Composite and S-Video inputs are applied directly to IC7300 for
processing.
The tuner RF is rst applied to the combination NTSC/ATSC Tuner and
then applied to IC7300.
The two HDMI inputs have a dedicated switcher IC5513. The output of
the HDMI switcher is applied to a switcher/AD converter IC4501.
The PC input is also applied to IC4501.
The two component inputs have a dedicated switcher IC2505. The output
of IC2505 is applied to IC4501.
Therefore, the HDMI, PC, and Component input are all applied to IC4501
on the BM-Board. The PC and Component are sent through the A/D
converter within IC4501 before being outputted to IC7300. The HDMI
is already in a digital format, and therefore, bypasses the internal A/D
Converter.
The Composite Component Processor (CCP) converts the incoming
analog signal into a digital signal so it can be processed. This circuit also
improves the signal to noise ratio.
The Digital Reality Creator (DRC) circuit is a line doubler and noise
reduction circuit for the 480i signal. The DRC up-converts the 480i signal
to a 960i signal (High Denition Format). The DRC also acts as a noise
reduction circuit for the 480i signal. All other signals (480p, 720p, and
1080i) bypass the DRC circuit.
The IFP circuit takes all signals and performs the Interlace to Progressive
scan conversion, and also performs the signal scaling process to develop
a signal equal to the resolution of the particular size LCD panels.
The nal step in digital processing, the Digital Component Processor
(DCP) IC9100, ne tunes the signal and makes adjustments to improve
overall contrast and sharpness before the image is displayed on the
panel.
The ATSC/NTSC Tuner is located on the BM-Board. The tuner receives
all analog and digital CATV and Over-the Air signals. Both signals are
applied directly to IC7300 for processing.
The Xillion (IC7300) also generates the User Menu and Service mode
graphics.
The EEPROM (IC7501) stores the following information.
Gamma Correction
White Balance Correction
User Data
The Xillion (IC7300) includes all the video processing circuits such as,
the Composite Component Processor (CCP), Digital Reality Creator
(DRC), and Image Format Processor (IFP) circuits.

5. Video Processing System
Troubleshooting Video Failures
IMPORTANT: Before proceeding with the following video troubleshooting
procedures it is assumed that the TV is turning on with the Green Power
LED illuminated and Audio is okay.
If a Video and Audio failure is occurring then there is most likely a Power
Supply defect and in most cases a protection mode will be activated.
The only exception to this rule would be if the No Audio & No Video
is occurring on a single input. In this case the defect may exist in the
external device.
BM-Board
Backlight Inverter Board
Power Supply.Board
Missing or Distorted Video on All Inputs
The rst step when a Missing or Distorted Video defect occurs is to
determine if video is missing or distorted on all video input sources, or
if it is missing or distorted only on one or a select number of video input
sources.
Missing or Distorted Video on All Inputs
If the video is missing or distorted only on one or select number of
inputs then you will troubleshoot the Individual Inputs and the external
devices connected to them, which will be discussed in the coming pages.
However, if video is missing or distorted on All Inputs then you must
determine the common element (or circuit) to all inputs that is causing the
anomaly.
Missing or Distorted Video on Individual Inputs
Missing Video All Inputs
When a video problem occurs you will experience one of the two following
symptoms.
Input Status:
Video Anomaly:
The three components common to all inputs are as follows.
Poor Detail
BM-Board (Xillion IC7300)
Moving Video Distortion (e.g. Bars)
LCD Panel Assembly (Includes TCON)
Static H/V Lines (black, white, or color)
Backlight Inverter Board

Gamma
The main objective when troubleshooting one of the previously listed
symptoms is to determine if the defect exists in the following sections of
the TV system.
CTV-44
LCD Panel Assembly
If the video is completely missing you will rst use the On-ScreenDisplays (OSD) to possibly isolate the defect to the BM-Board.
On-Screen Displays (OSD) Reference Figure 4-1

5. Video Processing System
If the USER MENU or SONY Logo OSD can be displayed then the LCD
Panel assembly is okay, and you can safely assume the defect exists on
the BM-Board. However, if the USER MENU or SONY Logo OSD cannot
be displayed you need to do further troubleshooting because either
IC7300 is not sending the OSD or the LCD Panel assembly is not able to
display the OSD, you cant be sure.
The SONY logo OSD is inserted into the video at the very end of the
Video path. The USER MENU is inserted into the video more towards the
beginning of the video path. Both are inserted within the Xillion IC on the
BM-board. If the OSD cannot be displayed then the next step will be to
conrm that the Backlight is coming ON.
Backlight Normal Operation: In normal operation the backlight will
come ON when the TV is rst turned ON displaying the SONY logo (the
logo is a momentary OSD on the screen) and then turn OFF. After a few
seconds the backlight will turn back ON and display the live video (TV
ON).
There are two quick methods to determine the state of the backlight.
board take a ashlight and shine the light at various areas on the front of
the LCD Panel to conrm that the BM-Board is sending video to the LCD
Panel. You should see video in the areas illuminated by the light of the
ashlight.
Perform the following checks to determine whether the defective
component is the Backlight Inverter Board or the Power Supply Board.
Reference Figure 5-2
1) Check the 24V at CN2/pins 2-5
If this voltage is missing check all connections between the G1M or G5M
power supply board and the Inverter Board. Troubleshoot the Power
Supply board if connections are okay.
2) Check the High-Voltage Inverter board output to the backlights.
Reference gure 5-2 for a detailed diagram for the High-Voltage test
points.
1) You should see a bluish-white raster on the front of the
LCD Panel (sometimes called a Bright Raster) when
the backlight is turned ON. There is a distinct difference
between a completely OFF raster (TV OFF) and a ON
raster (Backlight ON).
As shown in gure 5-2 place an Oscilloscope probe Over (or Near) DO NOT PENETRATE THE PROTECTIVE TRANSFORMER COVER
- each of the individual output transformers or connector on the Inverter
Board. The proper position is indicated by a Star on the diagram. Each
transformer drives one backlight lamps. Set your oscilloscope to the
Volts/Div and Time/Div. to those shown on each waveform picture.
2) If you have the back cover off, there are plenty of holes
or areas at the rear of the LCD Panel in which to see the
light from the panel backlights.
Good outputs will display approximately a 2Vpp waveform, while a
defective outputs will display approximately a 400mVpp or less.
At this point there will be one of three scenarios
1) No Backlight (Audio OK)
2) Backlight with No Video (Audio OK)
3) Momentary Backlight with No Video (Audio OK)
No Backlight: Before you begin troubleshooting the Backlight Inverter
CTV-44
NOTE: On the 37 model there is a connector CN12 at the bottom of the
Backlight Inverter board. This is the return line for all the backlight lamps.
Make sure this connector is securely connected for proper Inverter Board
operation.
Backlight with No Video: If the backlights are ON then either the TCON
board or the BM-Board has failed. The only way to reliably determine
which component is defective is to measure the digital videos levels on
the LVDS cable between the BM-Board and the TCON board. Reference
gure 5-3 for a detail diagram of the test points and waveforms for the
31

LVDS cable.
CAUTION: Probe carefully so not to short the active video wire to
the black ground wire. A short may cause damage to the BM-Board
or T-CON board.
voltage again with the lamp disconnected. If the voltage level recovers to
proper output level the lamp is defective. However, if the output level does
not recover the Inverter output is defective.
The video wires on the LVDS cable are twist pairs (Color & White pair),
which distinguishes them from the other wires on the connector. Good
video levels will be approximately 100mVpp waveform. Notice that the
orange LVDS wire has a different waveform. Use the waveform in the
diagram to conrm a good video level.
If the is no video level or extremely low video level disconnect the LVDS
cable and measure the levels again to determine if the TCON is loading
the lines down or if the BM-Board is sending a poor video signal. If the
levels recover to proper levels after disconnecting the cable replace
the LCD Panel assembly. The TCON board cannot be replaced as an
individual part, it is part of the LCD Panel assembly.
If the levels do not recover to proper levels then replace the BM-Board.
Momentary Backlight Momentary Video: The TV seems to power up
normally. The backlight turns on and the SONY logo is displayed, the
backlight turns OFF and back ON. However, the backlight only turns
back ON - the second time -momentarily with video and turns OFF again
permanently. The TV stays ON with audio, and no protection mode is
activated.
The cause of this failure symptom is either a defective lamp or a defective
Inverter output. To isolate the defective component measure each Inverter
board high voltage output at the individual output transformer. Reference
gure 5-2 and the procedure described in the previous No Backlight
section for a detailed description on how to properly measure the Inverter
High Voltage outputs.
If the Inverter High Voltage output levels measure okay then one of the
backlight lamps have failed and the LCD Panel must be replaced.
If any of the Inverter High Voltage output levels measure low or is missing
disconnect the lamp connected to that transformer. Measure the output

5. Video Processing System
Distorted Video All Inputs
Common Components to All Inputs that can affect video quality.
Therefore, a gamma distortion can show up as a color brightness
irregularity in specic zones or specic color areas in the picture, as well
as an irregularity in overall picture brightness.
The two components common to all inputs are as follows.
LCD Panel Assembly Affects (& TCON Board)
LCD Panel Assembly
BM-Board
Both of the components listed, if defective, will have a somewhat unique
affect on the displayed video.
The BM-Board Affects
A video distortion that has soft edges and/or is moving through the video
is most likely caused by a defect in the video processing circuitry. All video
processing circuitry is located on the BM-Board. Therefore, replace the
BM-Board if the video distortion has soft edges and/or is moving through
the video on the screen. Macro-Blocking is a good example of this type
of distortion. Be careful though, macro-blocking can also be caused by a
weak RF signal when the TV is in the tuner mode.
Poor Picture Detail - loss of overall picture detail. A loss of information
on the LVDS lines from the Xillion IC will cause poor overall picture
detail.
White Balance (WB) Irregularity - a WB irregularity will show up
as an overall poor reproduction of white. A white raster can be used to
determine if a WB or gamma irregularity has occurred. WB will cover the
complete picture, where as, gamma will be in specic zones or specic
color areas in the picture. WB adjustment data is stored in the EEPROM
IC7501 on the BM-Board.
Gamma Irregularity - Gamma Correction affects the overall picture
brightness level and individual color (RGB) brightness levels. Gamma
adjustment data is stored in the EEPROM IC7501 on the BM-Board.
The data may become corrupted causing irregular gamma adjustment.
The gamma adjustment is divided up into zones over the entire screen.
CTV-44
Line(s) of Pixels (Fixed Position) - poor bonding between the LCD
Panel and the ex cables will cause a loss of line(s) of pixels.
Random Line(s) of Pixels (Random Movement) - The TCON board
controls the charging and timing of the pixels. If the TCON is partially
defective random lines and/or pixels will be seen randomly ashing across
the screen.
Missing or Distorted Video on Individual Inputs
The primary objective is to locate the defective component through
activating each individual video input and checking for any abnormal
symptoms on the screen. If the video distortion appears only in one or two
video inputs then the next step is to eliminate the possibility of a defective
or improperly connected external device such as, a VCR or DVD player.
The quickest way to troubleshooting the external devices is to swap the
suspect device with a known good device at the particular input.
If the external device or connections are defective then the TV is okay
and the external device and connections need to be serviced. If the
external devices and their connections are okay then the next step is to
troubleshoot the problem by accessing and displaying each video input.
The rationale behind this troubleshooting method is that each of these
video inputs takes an altogether or somewhat different path through the
video processing system. This fact enables you to determine the defect,
in some cases, down to the component level, and in almost all cases,
down to at least the board level. For example, if the distortion appears
in both HDMI 1 & 2 inputs but not in any other inputs (e.g. composite or
component) then most likely the HDMI Switcher (IC5513) is causing the
distortion. The reason for this conclusion is because the HDMI signals
are the only signals to pass through IC5513. All other input signals
bypass IC5513. The composite signal goes directly to the video processor

6. Audio Processing System
Overall System Description
Troubleshooting Audio Failures
Reference Figures 6-1
The rst step when a Missing or Distorted Audio defect occurs is to
determine if audio is missing on all audio input sources, or if there is
missing audio only on one or a select number of audio input sources.
All audio inputs (except Video 2) are connected directly to the BM-Board.
Video 2 and the Headphone audio inputs connect directly to the UMBoard and then to the BM-Board through connector CN1400. The BMBoard contains all audio switching and audio processing circuits. IC2014
is the analog audio switcher and ADC on the BM-Board.
The ATSC and HDMI digital inputs bypass the switcher IC2014 and
go directly to the Xillion IC7300. IC7300 performs all audio processing
functions (e.g. volume, equalizing, and special effects). Note the two
paths for the ATSC and NTSC signals. The NTSC signal from the tuner
goes to the switcher IC2014 for A/D conversion and switching, and the
ATSC, as already mentioned, goes directly IC7300 for decoding.
The Xillion IC7300 output is D/A converted and then applied to the
audio output amplier IC2009. The amplied signal is then applied to the
speakers through CN2000.
The analog audio output (J1722) on these models is a xed audio level
approximately 500mVrms. This output is always ON.
The digital SPDIF audio output (J1701) is a coaxial cable connection.
Refer to the digital output table in Chapter 2 for details on the audio
formats compatible with this output.
Input Status:
Missing or Distorted Audio on All Inputs
Missing or Distorted Audio on Individual Inputs
Missing or Distorted Audio on All Inputs
Although all the audio processing and amplication circuits are located
on a single board, the BM-Board, it is a good troubleshooting practice
to conrm the location of the defect before just blindly replacing the BMBoard. This can be done with just a couple of quick output and power
supply checks.
Check for audio at the Fixed Audio Output to isolate the problem to either
the Xillion IC7300 or Power Amplier Circuit on the BM-Board & the
Speakers. The audio system is basically divided in half when accessing
this checkpoint (Fixed Audio Output).
If there is no audio present at the Fixed Audio Output jack then the
problem exists in the Xillion IC7300 on the BM-Board. Replace the BMBoard to repair the problem.
If there is audio present at the Fixed Audio Output then the Xillion IC7300
circuits are OK and the problem is located in the Power Amplier circuit
IC2009 on the BM-Board, G1M or G5M board, or the Speakers.
To isolate the defective component to either the BM-Board, Power supply
G1M or G5M board, or Speakers you must rst check the supply voltage
to the amplier on the BM-Board and check for defective speakers or
damaged connections.
The dedicated power supply voltage for the BM-Board is the AU15V at
CTV-44
37
6. Audio Processing System
CN6201/pin1 on the G1M or G5M board. Reference Figure 3-4 for easily
accessible test points for this voltage.
Board. Therefore, replacing the BM-Board should x this problem.
If the AU15V are missing then the problem exists in the power supply
circuits. Replace the G1M or G5M Board.
If the AU15V is okay, then the next step is to check the speaker system.
The speakers should measure 8 ohms each. Measure the speaker
resistance directly on the speaker terminals. Conrm all speaker
connections to the BM-Board are secure and undamaged. Replace or
repair the components were necessary.
If the speaker system checks okay, then the problem exists on BM-Board.
Replace the BM-Board.
Missing or Distorted Audio on Individual Inputs
If only one or a select number of input sources are experiencing a
problem, then the individual inputs must be checked separately. The
external devices and their associated cables connected to the faulty input
should be checked rst.
Substitute a known good device and cable on the suspected faulty
input. Connect the device and cable at separate times to determine if the
device or cable is causing the problem. Replace the device or cabling if
found to be defective. However, if the external device and cables are okay,
then the next step is to replace the common board or module associated
with that particular input source.
For example, consider the symptom of all or only one or two of the
Composite 1, 3 or NTSC inputs are faulty. Logically the only device that
could cause this symptom is the switcher IC2014 on the BM-Board. The
most likely problem is one or more of the switcher inputs are defective. In
this case, replace the BM-Board.
Another example would be missing or distorted audio on one or both
HDMI input only. The only component that would affect only the HDMI
audio inputs is the HDMI switcher IC5513 or receiver IC4501 on the BM-
