Seeing superstar double
Mayor discusses
economic growth,

By ZANE CLARK

ZANE CLARK/The Sun
Those at the Adventure Land pop culture store in the Voorhees Town Center on Dec. 28 were seeing double when WWE superstars and
then WWE Tag Team champions The Miz and his partner Damien Mizdow appeared to pose for photographs and sign autographs for
hundreds of fans. The Miz believes himself an A-List actor, and as such Mizdow acts as his stunt double by mimicking everything The
Miz does, usually involving grapples and punches to thin air. Posing with The Miz, left, and Mizdow are young fans from Cherry Hill, 8year-old Justin Schwartz, right, and his 7-year-old brother Adam.
Even though 2014 came to a
close just last week, Mayor
Michael Mignogna and township
officials have already been hard
at work planning for what 2015
could bring to the township.
Looking to the months and full
year ahead, Mignogna said the
biggest challenge, as with the last
year and all the years before,
would be controlling and stabilizing taxes.
Certainly, our biggest challenge every year is stabilizing and
controlling taxes, and obviously
we do that not just through controlling spending but generating

Health-care consumers vote
Virtua Voorhees with highest ratings
Health-care consumers in
South Jersey have voted the Virtua Voorhees hospital with the
highest quality and image ratings of all hospitals in what is
identified as the Camden market
and includes Camden, Burlington
and Gloucester counties. Virtua
was the areas only recipient of
the 2014-2015 Consumer Choice
Award from the National Research Corporation. This is the
seventh time Virtua has won this
award.
Virtua is honored to receive
the Consumer Choice Award because it is based on the opinions
of health-care consumers in our
marketplace, Virtua President
and CEO Richard P. Miller. This
designation indicates that we
have earned the trust and loyalty
of the communities we serve.
Winners are determined by
consumer perceptions on multiple quality and image ratings collected in National Researchs
Market Insights survey, which is
the largest online consumer
health-care survey in the U.S.,
surveying more than 290,000
households.
The award winners are hospitals that health-care consumers
have identified as having the best
reputations for high-quality care,
improvement initiatives and positive consumer perceptions and
experiences.
According to Brian Wynne,
vice president at National Research, This years winners have
done an exceptional job of representing their organizations in
terms of high-quality care, improvement initiatives and positive consumer perceptions and
experiences.
At Virtua, Miller said people
are cared for at all stages of their
lives through a range of health
and wellness services.
Our mission is to help people
be well, get well and stay well,
Miller said. This award is an affirmation from the community
we serve that we are fulfilling
that mission and we appreciate
being recognized by consumers
with the Consumer Choice
Award.

Dec. 29 marked the final meeting of the Voorhees Township
Committee for 2014.
While much of the meeting
was the execution of routine
year-end business such as budget
transfers and approval of the 2015
fee schedule, a special occurrence
that took place at the meeting was
the appointment and swearing in
of five new officers for the
Voorhees Township Police Department.
The committee formally and
unanimously approved the appointment of the officers first
through resolution, and then before the meeting was adjourned,
Mayor Michael Mignogna had
each officer come forward before
their family and friends to be officially sworn in.
The five officers sworn in were
Michael Hagner, Michael Marchitto, Joseph Kavano, Kenneth
Fowlkes and Chase Waldman.
Mignogna and the committee
congratulated the five officers
and welcomed them to the department.
Now having been sworn in, the
officers will go through training
at the police academy, with the

Voorhees encourages Live Where You Work Program
Voorhees Townships population of approximately 31,000 residents increases on a
daily basis when commuters and shoppers
visit our community. We encourage those
who work in Voorhees to become residents
here.
In 2009, the township committee chose to
participate in the state-sponsored Live
Where You Work Program, which offers financial incentives to workers who buy
homes in the municipalities where they
work.
More than 40 other communities, including Cherry Hill and Evesham, have also
joined the program.
Live Where You Work offers low-interest
mortgage rates, flexible loan application
reviews and help with down payments and
closing costs to
qualified buyers.
To qualify, a person must be a firsttime home buyer
who works but
does not presently
live in Voorhees.
Income guidelines
posted by the New
Jersey
Housing
and Mortgage Financing
Agency,
which
administers the program,
suggest that a
household of one
or two people can
Michael
Mignogna
MAYORS MESSAGE
earn no more than $85,600 a year if the
family wants to qualify.
Households with three or more can qualify with an annual income of no more than
$98,440.
Incentives include down-payment and
closing-cost assistance equal to as much as
5 percent of the total mortgage amount.
Voorhees is promoting the program
through
our
township
website,
www.voorheesnj.com, and additional information can be obtained at the state website
www.livewhereyouwork.nj.gov or you can

The program should help others learn
what our residents already know, that
Voorhees is in the center of everythingand away from it all.

Y.A.L.E. autism
programs
for parents
Jan. 21, 28
Parents of children with
autism and other disabilities in
New Jersey can sometimes be
overwhelmed with the complex
system of state agencies, programs and service providers
which exist to help people with
disabilities and their families. Accessing services and supports
made available through the New
Jersey Department of Human
Services Division of Developmental Disabilities funded programs is an important part of
most individuals transition
plans, especially when students
are approaching graduation or
are aging-out of the school system.
To help parents and educators
make sense of it all, Jonathan
Sabin, director of DDDs Office
on Autism, presented a free workshop in cooperation with Y.A.L.E.
Schools Autism programs entitled Autism: Navigating Through
the Maze. Attendees included
Y.A.L.E. School parents and staff
members, members of the community and representatives of
local public school districts.
Building partnerships between private schools, local public school districts and parents is
one of our most important goals,
said John Wilson, supervisor of
Y.A.L.E. Schools Audubon campus.
Wilson and Y.A.L.E. Schools
Autism Programs will host another series of events on Jan 21 and
28, at Y.A.L.E. Schools Audubon
campus, located inside the
Audubon High School building.
Attorneys from the law firm Hinkle, Fingles & Prior will present
workshops on the topics of transition, legal guardianship, and protected decision making for parents of adults with autism.
Y.A.L.E. School has campus locations, including in Voorhees,
serving students with autism and
related disabilities throughout
southern New Jersey and the
greater Philadelphia region serving children on the spectrum ages
3 through 21.

revenue, Mignogna said.
To that point, Mignogna touted
the Route 73 corridor.
We have the $600 million Virtua campus there, we have the $28
million Brandywine Senior Facility and we have a new hotel that
recently
opened
there,
Mignogna said.
Into 2015, Mignogna said the
township would continue to work
to have the corridor grow and
prosper.
There are related medical offices and restaurants that are
coming in. All of that has to do
with the Virtua Medical Campus, Mignogna said. Its been
really the economic anchor for
that entire corridor.
In addition to the Route 73 cor-
ridor, Mignogna said the township would be working for the
growth and prosperity of the
Voorhees Town Center as well.
The restaurant row has been
an amazing success, and we hope
that the retail portion will grow,
Mignogna said.
According to Mignogna, in the
last year and a half, Voorhees has
had about 90 new businesses
open, which led to about 900 new
jobs.
In addition to attracting new
businesses, Mignogna said in 2015
the township would continue to
focus on current businesses,
through various initiatives such
as a business retention task force
that Mignogna said the township
recently established to help existing businesses thrive.
Mignogna said another economic initiative continuing into
2015 would be the townships

According to Mignogna, the department has 47 officers, with
three expected to retire soon, and
the additional officers sworn in at

It makes our officers jobs
more efficient and gives them less
time writing tickets and more
time actually on the street,
Mignogna said.
Another police initiative in
2015 that Mignogna said the township and department were looking forward to is Voorhees Townships second annual Jr. Police
Academy.
The first academy took place
this past summer, and according
to Mignogna, about 20 kids between the ages of 12 and 15 went
through a week of the Jr. Police
Academy during which they engaged in physical fitness training,
marching exercises, ceremonies
and learned about motor vehicle
laws, criminal laws, crime scene
investigation and firearms.
It was the first year last year
(2014) and it filled up really quick
and it was a cool thing,
Mignogna said. I got to be a part
of their graduation day.
In addition to the academy,
Mignogna said Voorhees Police
Department Chief Louis Bordi
will be continuing his work in
2015 toward the creation of the
Memorial Garden, which will pay
tribute to those lost in the 9/11
terrorist attacks.
We have an artifact from the
World Trade Center thats going
to be a part of that garden and its
going to honor the victims of the
9/11 tragedies, Mignogna said.

JAN. 713, 2015 THE VOORHEES SUN 11
Mignogna: Were looking forward
to 13th annual summer twilight series
MIGNOGNA
Continued from page 9
ing their property tax bill at the
end of the year.
Our Shop Voorhees program
has been very successful,
Mignogna said. We now have 55
business and nearly 5,000 residents participating in it.
As for the township itself,
Mignogna said he and officials
are always looking for ways to
save money through increasing
efficiency, one example being
through the recent initiation of
sidearm trash collection, with
side arm recycling collection expected to start in the beginning
months of the new year.
The carts have been ordered
and we expect to begin that program sometime in the first quarter of 2015, Mignogna said.
That will allow us to operate
more efficiently, and that will
allow us to use our DPW manpower in other areas.
Mignogna said the township
also looks to continue with the
purchase of additional compressed natural gas trash trucks,
which, according to Mignogna,
are more environmentally friendly and will save the township in
fuel costs.
Another area where Mignogna
said the township hopefully
wouldnt have to spend much
money in 2015 is on snow removal, but he and the township
are prepared if necessary.
Mignogna said the township always budgets liberally so it has
enough snow removal funds
available, which were needed last
year when the township got hit
pretty hard.
Its tough sometimes to forecast what the winter is going to
bring, Mignogna said. We sort
of make due, and if more funds
need to be allotted for snow removal, then well allot them.
Finally, moving from winter to
summer, Mignogna said one
thing the township is looking forward to once again for 2015 is the
13th annual summer twilight series on the Great Lawn at Connolly Park.
Our community events have
become bigger and better than
ever, Mignogna said. Were
looking forward to another successful summer twilight series.
These shows that weve had have
been top notch.
Theyre getting bigger and
bigger every year. Connolly Park
has become quite the destination
for those events.
