Foundation Production - Evaluation Q5

Sam Parker created a thriller film opening to appeal to a target audience aged 16-40. Some key elements included: - Dark lighting, settings, and themes of alcoholism and domestic violence. - Fast pacing through short shots and flashbacks to build tension. - A female protagonist to address audience desires for more women in lead roles. - A tense, deep soundtrack to match the intensity of scenes. - Distressed typography consistent with the thriller genre. The audience responded positively overall but suggested providing more context about the antagonist and plot.

Question 5: How did you attract/address your audience?
I made my thriller very enticing to my particular audience because I used actors, settings and plots
that would appeal to them. The variety of shot types and the flashy nature of the film wouldve
helped also. I used many close ups such as this one, which builds the tension and anticipation.
The mise-en-scene is extremely dark and grungy which would appeal to the younger side of my
target audience. All of the blood and the disturbing nature of the opening may prove distressing to
some younger and older people, which is why I have focused mainly on the 16-40 age range. The
dark nature of my opening continues into the flashbacks and even the themes within the opening.
This shot shows Jason Maverick- an alcoholic ex boyfriend who has been abusing his partner. You
can see him grasping the whiskey bottle in this shot. This would appeal to a young audience
because many young people enjoy drinking but
often abuse it and risk becoming alcoholic.
This may even be a typical sight for some
young people whos parents have struggled
with alcoholism.

The audience wanted deeper storylines that had a dark side, I feel that this would appeal to them.
They also asked for fast paced action scenes, but obviously this wasnt possible because of budget
and time constraints so I added fast paced flashes which picked up the overall pace of the opening

and also made it quite jumpy. I shortened the length of the shots down to barely 2 seconds in order
to built up the pace and build the sense of enigma. I believe that the dark lighting also aids in
making the opening more menacing. I applied a vignette filter and altered the contrast to make all
of the shots seem darker, I believe that it has worked quite effectively, but it still isnt a substitute for
natural darkness. I had to film during the day, which obviously impacted how the opening looks and
you can still tell it was sunny, but I like the effect as it makes everything have a sinister glow. Many
young people like watching scary films because it makes them feel rebellious. It may be that
theyve never been allowed to see them as teenagers or they still are teenagers and they want to
rebel against their parents by watching
something with a horror theme.

The audience wanted more female

involvement in the film, stating that typically
women dont get as many lead roles as men do. To address this issue I made the lead character
and protagonist a woman and I focused on an issue that effects many women- domestic violence.
Its not a gender specific issue, but its commonly perceived that women are generally targeted for
domestic violence more than women, which is why I chose this theme. In this mid shot you can see
Lauren spinning around as her attacker chases her through the corridors of her college. This is one
of the flashes in the clip, showing the past so it would only be on the screen under a second which
would make the opening seem fast paced, which was one of the things that the audience wants to
see. It adds an interesting layer to the film, because its a glimpse into the backstory of the film and
whats happening in the opening. My audience wanted an interesting backstory, and this was raw
best way to provide it.

The music in my opening was chosen carefully

and specifically. My interviewees didnt
comment much on what they wanted the
soundtrack to sound like, so I decided to opt
for something that was quite slow, but with
deep bass and crashing noises. I tried to keep the soundtrack synchronous so it crescendos at
certain high points of the opening when the protagonist may be in danger, and at the low points it
gets quiet and slower. The audience would like this because it makes all of the action more tense
when the audio links directly to the video. Originally the second piece of music I used was an
asynchronous song that didnt tie in with the film, but because it was a slow love ballad it
contrasted the excessive violence as Jason was killing Lauren which overall made the whole scene
a lot more eerie. An asynchronous soundtrack enhances a film more than a synchronous one
because the contrast between the video and sound intensifies the scenes, and make violence
more disturbing. The audience question whats going on and why its happening more than they
would if the music was dramatic like the video. Due to copyright I had to remove the asynchronous
track when I uploaded it to YouTube and I had
to extend the first piece of music to fill in the
gap. The soundtrack Im using now sounds
good, and it ties in but its not as eerie as the
previous one.

Sam Parker
The typography I used is very distressed looking. Its a sans serif font with certain elongated letters
and some are over tipped- like the Cs and Es. I chose this typography because thriller films
generally have very dilapidated and distressed looking titles that somehow link to the nature of the
film. This typography looks like its been smashed which connotes to the violent hammer attack on
Lauren. Typography in thriller films is always distressed looking, so I felt that by sticking to this
convention I would keep my audience happy.

Overall the audience responded extremely positively to my opening, saying that its fast paced,
enthralling and looks like a professional thriller. They say that the acting was excellent, but I
couldve included more of the antagonist in order to provide better characterisation and
understanding of the plot. The audience found the plot a bit hard to grasp from the opening, and
said that the title didnt make sense- although this is probably due to diminishing interest in old
sayings and slang as language evolves. My opening is similar to many other films in the fact that it
includes a chase and a creepy element whereby bloody photographs have been nailed to trees in
an attempt to consume the protagonist with fear. The photographs nailed to the trees is a sick and
twisted element that I used to make the audience experience fear and anticipation. I believe that
the audience would enjoy this because its the kind of typical elements youd find in a thriller film
and the emotions that they evoke make the experience more thrilling. These elements have been
done before in many films, but as with most I have taken these and added my own personal twistmaking them link to flashbacks.

I feel that the plot attracted my audience because many people like bloody films with a high amount
of violence. The editing has been done tastefully, showing violence and gore but not too much. I

was on a limited budget so I had to use whatever mies-en-scene I could, I chose to film in various
locations, a school, an apartment and the woods and all of these locations are filled with objets that
could be used for props. I then only had a few things I had to bring, such as the hammer, nails, fake
blood and the pictures. I chopped the opening up into various sections and rearranged parts and
added in flashes and flashbacks, all to try and confuse and disorientate the audience and make it
feel as if youre watching it from Laurens perspective. Overall the opening adheres to the
audiences expectations of the thriller genre.
