Further Contextual Analysis
Front Cover
Codes and Conventions
Skyline/Strapline: It is conventional to magazines to include a strapline/skyline, it is code
for its positioning to be at
the top of the cover in a
banner like format. A strapline and skyline is a dedicated bar in the upper section of the
magazine conventionally it acts like cover lines do whereby it hints what else is in the
magazine and who. In this instance Uncut does as explained where by theyve listed three
stage names who feature. The skyline is important since its at the top, it could potentially be
the first thing a viewer sees if the rest of the magazine is obscured, it helps to reveal the
genre of the magazine from the members mentioned.
Anchorage Text: The anchorage text is positioned in the left sector of the magazine and
follows the banner Exclusive; it is very bold in contrast to cover lines
and is positioned besides the head of the main model. Anchorage text is
the name(s) of the model(s) on the front cover which are the main
attraction they are important as it draws the audience in knowing who is included and who
the main person is. Anchorage text is a convention throughout all magazines as the model
used needs to be highlighted and named on their cover in order to create hype.
Target Audience
Ethnicity: The cover lines and skyline all refer to White artists therefore it is most likely to
assume the target audience is white due to more interest in artists with the same origin. In
addition, the main model, Dylan, is white which further emphasises the point that the
intended audience is also white. This is a British published magazine and so I assume the
target audience is also British born people.
Gender: It would seem that this magazine is addressed to a male audience on reason being
that the artists mentioned on the cover are in fact males. In addition, the main image is of a
male too and the direct address used in this image is as if it addresses males. The colour
scheme could portray as male favoured audience as the browns, red and white seems to
basic to stereotypically meet a females need and the country, cowboy theme created
addresses more to males as in this historic era were more dominate. Font choice can show
connotations of the target audience being male as is appearance is narrow, bold and really
basic and stereotypically female content font would be more fanciful and more complex than
that and stereotypically males would be too bothered.
Age: I believe the age target is middle aged onwards, a hint here is that the artists are from
1970s onwards and so would appeal to those who grew up with this music who would be
middle aged nowadays. Also the simplistic, woody colours as the colour scheme is too
boring for children, disinteresting for teenagers and young adults I feel like a more mature
audience would warm to its simplicity more. The letters of the masthead are in block which is
a traditional and associated with old day publications which the niche market being mid
aged abouts- can associate themselves with. In addition the magazine itself is very long it
has a lot of pages and acts almost like a book, there is too much contents for a young
person and therefore would suit this ideal older age group. Morever the main image quality is
pretty old style, its slightly fussy and has the washed out tone to it denoting its for older
people since its an older photo or one to look older.
Class and Lifestyle: A way of determining these two social aspects is by the pricing of the
magazine; this magazine is 4.80. This is quite expensive for a magazine and so would
appeal more to middle class members which a high pay, probably in a professional career
who can treat themselves to a magazine of this price.
Genre
Colour scheme: The colour scheme involves a series of shades of brown. The main music
genre of this magazine is country and Americana. The browns in particular represent country
music as you think of the wooden guitars used and the scenery of the country in America the
dusty soil and the architecture the woody colour really does represent this era.
Main Image: The models clothing is very simplistic and out dated, this costume refers back
to the country days and so symbolises the genre of country. The props uses are a pale
yellow hat and a country guitar; once again these props are heavily associated with the
country and its music.
Contents Page
Codes and Conventions
Masthead: Conventionally the masthead from the front is transferred over to the contents
page also. This is to encourage branding and greaten the chance of the
audience remembering the masthead of the magazine. The masthead
is the title of the magazine with can portray the genre of the magazine
also. On this contents page the masthead is presented differently from
the front cover, which can be seen as breaking the conventions and youd expect one format
of the masthead and so this can cause confusion.
Article Titles and Page numbers: In this magazine the article titles follow each in the left
column of the contents page, they are accompanied with a page
number and have a grab quote underneath. An article title is the
name given to overall sum up and introduce the article to follow
and they are a convention on the contents to help he reader know what articles features and
the page numbers provide navigation.
Target Audience Middle Aged, White, Middle Class Males
One of the main connotations to portray the target audience is that there are no images,
other than in the editorial; stereotypically a young audience and females look for images
which creates hype. Although, the absence of images is ok to the older males as they take
more interest in the contents features, the page numbers and article titles. The language
used in the editorial is very formal and creates a sense of nostalgia as it reinforces dates and
old titles this may be more interesting for the middle class as they are stereotypically more
appreciative of the past and heritage in comparison to lower classes
Genre Americana & Country
In the top right corner of this page there is an image of a vinyl with brown bordering, I feel
like this represents the old fashioned Americana music this magazine presents. In addition,
the artists name dropped in the article titles and grab quotes all fit into the genre of country,
for instance Dylan and Genesis. However, pictures conventionally portray the music
genre most obviously and there arent any on this contents page, which does break
conventions therefore the genre, isnt as obvious as it could be.
Double Page Spread
Codes and Conventions
Main Image: The main image is the picture on the page which appears more dominant in
contrast with other provided images. A main image is conventional to
every page of a magazine, for the double page spread Uncuts main
image takes up most of the page therefore it is shown as the main
image and more attention is brought to it. It is conventional for the main
image to have the model(s) who are the main subject in the following
article also.
Grab Quote: In this instance a grab quote is a selected quotation from the article, which is
hightlighted and placed elsewhere. The purpose of this is to keep the adience
reading ht artcile and let them know whats coming up from the interview.
Uncut hve positioned this in between the firt and second column of the second
page, theyve made it central to grab attention.
Target Audience- Middle aged, middle class, white males
First of all, there is a lot of text it is a long article which wouldnt appeal to younger
audiences as the shorter the better, although a more middle ages range would appreciate
and would to read more. The layout to this double page spread is very sectioned and
followed the rule of thirds, it might be too simple and elegant for a younger audience and
therefore the older audience would admire the format more. The images included are very
old as told by their quality and females, working class and younger aged people may find
this less interesting and out of date whereas the middle classed men will respond better.
Genre - Americana & Country
The genre is clearly shown in the main image as the mise en scene reinforces the genre.
The background consists of tumbleweed, and dry dust soil this immediately reinforces the
stereotypical imagery of country which is the genre. Also, the retro, red motorcycle can
represent Americana as it is where it originated and the fact it is so old can present the
stereotypical view that country is old.
