Second Recess Board Policy Ver2

Teachers of grades 1 through 4 may take their classes outside for a second recess of at least 15 minutes up to three times per week to improve learning, social development, and health, with the recess to be outside on designated play equipment except in extreme weather, and in addition to physical education class, consisting of unstructured play time but supervised, and with scheduling determined at the school and classroom level.

Teachersingrades1through4may,attheirdiscretion,taketheirclassesoutfora
secondrecessbreakofatleast15minutesuptothreetimesperweekinorderto
help improve their learning, social development, and health. The recess period
shall be outside, except in the case of extreme weather conditions, in a safe
outdoorareawithplayequipmentdesignatedforthatpurpose.Recessshallbein
addition to, and not a substitute for, physical education class. Recess shall be
supervisedbutshalllargelyconsistofunstructuredplaytime.Schedulingshallbe
conductedattheschoolandclassroomlevel.

TheSuperintendentshallestablishprocedurestoimplementthispolicy.
