Homed
Homed is Newcastle Universitys homeless medicine society. We work with many disadvantaged
groups in the north east, from homeless people to youth groups to refugee communities, and our
activities vary widely, for example volunteering in homeless kitchens and running practise job
interviews with refugees. We have several regular volunteering opportunities each week, and
frequently run one-off activities, such as clothing collections for homeless shelters and health
workshops across the city. Some of our activities are available to non-medics so feel free to get
friends/flatmates involved too!
We have another sign-up evening for any new volunteers coming up in the next few weeks so
keep an eye out on facebook and around the medical school!
On the 17th February we are holding a speaker evening on Youth Homelessness, and how the hell
it happens. There will be several speakers ranging from paediatricians to YMCA staff, and well be
holding it at Jesmond Methodist Church (the one facing Jesmond Tesco!). Well be serving some
delicious food, along with tea and coffee, so come down and join us!
We will also be hosting our annual sleepout outside the union to raise money for YMCA on
Saturday the 7th of March. We are hoping to build on our previous success with a few exciting
changes we think youll enjoy! Look out for the event coming up on facebook with details on how
to get involved and how to sponsor us.

Marrow

We
are Newcastle Marrow, the student group that aims to save lives by recruiting

potential donors to the Bone Marrow Register.

For many people with blood cancers, such as leukaemia, a Bone Marrow Transplant is
their
last chance of life. When patients cannot find a match within their family, their only

hope is to look for an unrelated donor. 16,000 patients around the world are currently

waiting
for a second chance at life. The Anthony Nolan global register searches for
matches for people desperately in need and has saved thousands of lives over the years.

We need your help!

Sign up to the register

We have a few upcoming clinics where you can join the register- all it takes is 15 minutes
of
your time and a spit sample, and you could go on to save a life. If you want to sign up
or just hear more, come along to one of these clinics:

Medsin
Newcastle is part of a UK network of students
Medsin
with a vision of 'a fair and just world in which equity
in health is a reality for all'. This translates into our three

missions
- Educate, Advocate and Act.
students have been involved with Medsin's activities as part of the 'Act' mission, including
Many
Teddy Bear Hospital, HOMED and Sexpression, but there's lots more to Medsin! Having won the

Society of the Year ncl+ award last year, we are looking to expand and become even bigger and
better
this year.

We will
be putting on regular speaker evenings on a wide variety of issues relating to global

health, as well as more informal 'Medsin Meets' sessions over tea and cake discussing the global

health issues that matter to you. Twice a year there is a Medsin National Conference, and this
November
(15th-16th) it will be right here in Newcastle, on the theme of 'Changing Cities -

Building a Healthy Future Together'. There will be world-class speakers, themed workshops and
debates as well as an evening social.
panel

Medsin will also be
providing free transport to the global health conference at UCL in March.
There is the opportuntity to receive training throughout the year from Medsin committee

members on leadership skills, time management, publicity and more. Last year we planned the
very successful 'Save Our NHS' Zombie Flashmob, and this year will be running many more
campaigns, including lobbying local NHS trusts to ensure that all their medical supplies come
from sustainable sources.

Your involvement in Medsin needn't be just in Newcastle - Medsin members from Newcastle
have attended the World Health Assembly (the annual meeting of the World Health
Organisation) in Geneva, as well as IFMSA (International Federation of Medical Student

Associations)
meetings in Taiwan, Washington DC and Tunisia.

We are also excited to be starting exchange programmes this year
which will allow students to
complete clinical and research exchanges throughout the world. Membership is just 5 and

includes memberships to all of Medsin's activities.

Evening,

Newcastle Obstetrics and Gynaecology Society

The Obstetrics and Gynaecology Society is a brand new medical student-led society that is
in its first year at Newcastle University. The societys goal is to provide a platform for
enthusiastic students, both medical and non-medical, to explore and further their interests
in the challenging and dynamic field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
The society aims to cater for a range of students; from those whose interest lies in gaining
support and advice to aid in the pursuit of a career in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, to those
whose involvement is more on a personal interest level.
Throughout the year the society will work alongside academics and doctors to provide
educational opportunities through events such as topical talks, educational lectures and
practical skills development sessions to not only aid those needing help getting through
medical OSCEs and exams but also to spark interest in members and aid in their education.
Involvement with the society also provides the opportunity to meet other students who
share similar interests as well as gaining further insight into this fascinating and varied
speciality.
So if you have an interest in Obstetrics and Gynaecology check out the society and see what
they can offer for you!
Membership benefits include society updates, contact with local specialists, priority access

Spoke NCL

[What were about]

Were
a studentrun advocacy group campaigning for safe, convenient cycle infrastructure on routes
across the city with a specific focus on those used on a daily basis by students.

We want to represent students views on local cycling issues and ensure that they are adequately
taken into account in local authority decision making. Through our activities we aim to improve

students engagement with cycling issues and encourage those who dont currently use a bike
regularly to do so.

We want to break down the barriers that currently prevent large numbers of students using a bike in
the
city.
[Plans for this term]
We have three objectives we want to achieve by the end of the year 1 Expand the core group of
people passionate about our cause.2 Establish ourselves as a university society.3 Progress two
of our planned student cycling infrastructure projects.
[How you can get involved]
We need your ideas help us identify what the students of Newcastle want and need!
We need your time and energy for campaigning, driving interest in our cause, attending meetings
to help align our strategy with other organisations, collecting data to base our policies on and, of
course, for fundraising.
Finally, we need your experience events, web/graphics design, social media, campaigning, baking,
marketing if you know how to do it, well probably find a use for it!
Basically we need you to make Newcastle a better place for students. Get in touch!

MILAN Medicine in
Literature and the Arts at
Newcastle
Following the highly successful film festival earlier
this month, MILAN are pleased to announce that
we will be running a book/film club from the
Walton Library (Glen Cluster Room) on the first
Wednesday of every month starting on Wed 4th
March with our first book being 'Never Let Me
Go' by Kazuo Ishiguro. Anyone attending is
encouraged to read the book before the 4th so
we can have an informal discussion about the
book and it's themes. We won't be discussing the
film directly but the DVD is on order for the
library and after the book group people may feel
compelled to watch the film and compare.
