CHRISTIANITY
Christianity from the Ancient Greek word Christos, a
translation of the Hebrew M, meaning "the
anointed one", it is the religion based on the person
and teachings of Jesus Christ, or its beliefs and
practices. Christianity is the world's largest
religion, with nearly 2.4 billion adherents, known as
Christians. Most Christians believe that Jesus is the
Son of God, fully divine and fully human, and the
saviour of humanity whose coming was prophesied in
the Old Testament. Consequently, Christians refer to
Jesus as Christ or the Messiah.

How did Christianity begin?

Christianity is an Abrahamic religion that began as a

Jewish sect in the mid-1st century.Originating in the
Levant region of the Middle East, it quickly spread to
Syria, Mesopotamia, Asia Minor, and Egypt. It grew in
size and influence over a few centuries, and by the
end of the 4th century had become the official state
church of the Roman Empire, replacing other forms of
religion practiced under Roman rule.During the
Middle Ages, most of the remainder of Europe was
Christianized, and adherents were gained in the
Middle East, North Africa, Ethiopia, and parts of
India.Following the Age of Discovery, Christianity
spread to the Americas, Australasia, sub-Saharan
Africa, and the rest of the world through missionary
work and colonization.Christianity has played a
prominent role in the shaping of Western civilization.

Worldwide, the three largest groups of Christianity

are the Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox
Church, and the various denominations of
Protestantism. The Roman Catholic and Eastern
Orthodox patriarchates split from one another in the
schism of the 11th century, and Protestantism came
into existence during the Reformation of the 16th
century, splitting from the Roman Catholic Church.

HINDUISM
What is Hinduism?
Hinduism is the oldest living religion in the world,

enduring today as a healthy, spirited and colourful

group of traditions. With almost a billion followers, it
is also the worlds third largest religion; Hindus
comprise about one-seventh of the worlds entire
population. Its origins lie in the vast Indian
subcontinent. While it remains the majority religion in
India, with over 800 million adherents, its spiritual,
cultural, social and linguistic influences extend across
the globe; over 60 million Hindus live outside of India
in 150 different countries, including in the UK (around
700,000) and North America (over 2 million).

How did it begin?

Hinduism, though, is not monolithic (characterised by
complete uniformity) and has thus eluded simple
definition. It has no single founder, no one scripture,
no single set of teachings, no unified code of conduct,
no central governing body. This was perplexing for
early Western scholars of religion because they
tended to perceive Hinduism through their own
preconceived ideas of the nature of religion most
often in relation to their own faith and
culture.Hinduism, in fact, is a family of many diverse
traditions, or sampradayas, each with its own distinct
theology, philosophy, rituals, code of practices, and
value system. This inescapable diversity and richness
makes Hinduism particularly hard to define in simple,
precise terms. Nonetheless, like in any family, there
are some common elements and unifying themes.
These include accepting God or a Supreme Reality,
atma (the soul), dharma (the law of righteousness),
karma (the law of cause and effect), the authority of
the Vedas, and moksha (liberation). Hinduism is also
responsible for many valuable contributions to the
world, such as that of the original concepts and

practices of Yoga, Ayurveda, Vastu, Jyotish, Vedanta,

karma, and much more.Although it is not easy to
define Hinduism, we can say with certainty that it is
closely connected to India, its culture and its sacred
texts but it also extends far beyond them.

JUDAISM
What is Judaism?

Judaism is the name of the religious faith and set of

practices that are shared by the Jewish
people.Technically, to be a member of the Jewish
people, one needs either to have been born to a
Jewish mother or to have converted to the Jewish
faith by one of the generally recognized movements
within the religion. And in fact, there are many Jews
who are non-practicing and/or non-believing, but
whose membership in the community is not
disputed. If they are women, or men who marry a
Jewish woman, their Jewishness will continue to be
passed on from one generation to the next regardless
of their individual behavior Yet, Judaism is not a race
nor a genetically determined identity, and the religion
and the people are open to new members who are
willing to undergo the process of conversion.

When did it begin?

Judaism is a religious tradition with origins dating
back nearly four thousand years, rooted in the
ancient near eastern region of Canaan (which is now
Israel and Palestinian territories). Originating as the
beliefs and practices of the people known as "Israel,"
classical, or rabbinic, Judaism did not emerge until
the 1st century C.E. Judaism traces its heritage to the
covenant God made with Abraham and his lineage
that God would make them a sacred people and give
them a holy land. The primary figures of Israelite
culture include the patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, Jacob,
and the prophet Moses, who received God's law at Mt.
Sinai. Judaism is a tradition grounded in the religious,
ethical, and social laws as they are articulated in the
Torah the first five books of the Hebrew Bible.

Islam
what is Islam?
Islam is a monotheistic and Abrahamic religion
articulated by the Qur'an, a book considered by its
adherents to be the verbatim word of God and by the
teachings and normative example (called the Sunnah
and composed of hadith) of Muhammad (c. 5708 June
632 CE), considered by them to be the last prophet of
God. An adherent of Islam is called a Muslim.Muslims

believe that God is one and incomparable and that

the purpose of existence is to worship God.Muslims
also believe that Islam is the complete and universal
version of a primordial faith that was revealed many
times before through prophets including Adam, Noah,
Abraham, Moses, and Jesus. They maintain that the
previous messages and revelations have been
partially misinterpreted or altered over time, but
consider the Arabic Qur'an to be both the unaltered
and the final revelation of God. Religious concepts
and practices include the five pillars of Islam, which
are basic concepts and obligatory acts of worship,
and following Islamic law, which touches on virtually
every aspect of life and society, providing guidance
on multifarious topics from banking and welfare, to
family life and the environment.

when did it begin?

The origin of Islam can be traced back to 7th century
Saudi Arabia. Islam is thus the youngest of the great
world religions. The prophet Muhammad (circa 570632 A.D.) introduced Islam in 610 A.D. after
experiencing what he claimed to be an angelic
visitation. Muhammad dictated the Qur'an, the holy
book of Islam, which Muslims believe to be the
preexistent, perfect words of Allah.
