The Submerged Ruins of the Bay of Aboukir 1

Pl. I.

Mr. President, Ladies and Gentlemen,

The Bay of Aboukir held many a great surprise for us. We already knew
that the ancient Canopic Branch, that stretched as far as El Hamra Fort on
the road to Rosetta, extended approximately 8 kilometers further on into the
bay, according to the drilling work undertaken in 1859 by Mr. Larousse, an
engineer for the Compagnie de Suez, following the orders of Viceroy Sad
Pasha (see Mmoire sur lAntique Alexandrie, by Mahmoud Bey El Falaki,
p.79), and according to the map of the British Admiralty. This extension was
also confirmed in the first century A.D. by Pliny in his Book V, Chapter XXXIV,
paragraph I:
Of the islands facing Asia, the first is situated in the Canopic Mouth of
the Nile, thus named it is said after Canopus, the ships pilot of Menelaus. The
second island is that of Pharos, linked to Alexandria by a bridge.
The first of the two islands referred to by Pliny, is the one known today as
Nelsons Island, situated approximately 11 kilometers from the shore where the
ancient Canopic Branch ends, at El Hamra Fort. It is obvious that this distance
is not in keeping with the words of Pliny, within the Canopic Mouth of the
river, which must describe a situation totally different from the one existing
today and it confirms the findings of engineer Larousses work.
At around the same period, Pomponius Mela, in Book II, Chapter VII,
tells us:
Canopus, opposite the mouth of the river Nile known as the Canopic
Mouth, is also not very extended. It was named after a certain Canopus, the
pilot of Menelaus, who died on that island. The island then gave its name to
that particular mouth of the river.

1 This is an English translation of a lecture read by H.R.H. Prince Omar Toussoun at a meeting of the Socit
Royale dArchologie held on 29 March 1934. The title of the French original was Les Ruines sous-marines
de la Baie dAboukir.
9

It is for this same reason given by the author that the branch of the Nile
came to be known by that name. The name Heracleotic given to it by some
authors, is derived from the city of Heracleum which was situated near the mouth
of the river, and would have been more appropriate than the first name, because
of that citys greater proximity to the mouth of the river than Canopus.
The extension marked on the map was traced following the depths
marked on the map of the British Admiralty, the latter constituting an official
document that leaves no room for doubt. The tracing follows a line of depths
up to 24 feet (7.32 meters), marking the bed of the ancient branch; whereas the
depths to the left and right of the line traced do not exceed 18 feet (5.49 meters),
and represent what remains of the old banksof the branch in question. At the far
end of the eastern bank, the depth immediately drops from 18 feet (5.49 meters)
to depths of up to 33 feet (10.65 meters).
Even though we are aware of this extension, no one could ever have
guessed that the bay contained such important ruins as the ones that we have
just discovered, and which, in my opinion, constitute only a small part of what
lies submerged under its waters and sands. We knew that the location of the
two cities of Menouthis and Heracleum remained to be determined. The first
of these was thought to be situated within the sand dunes south of El Ramleh
Fort, and the second where El Hamra Fort stands. Now, however, thanks to the
new discoveries, it is certain that the two cities are to be found in the Bay of
Aboukir.
I believe that the credit here goes to Mr. Daressy, former Secretary
General of the Service of Antiquities in our country, since he was the first to have
thought that this was the location of these cities (see Mnlas et lembouchure
de la Branche Canopique, in the Revue de lgypte Ancienne, Volume II, pp.
20-51).
We came to know of those ruins in the following manner:
Group Captain Cull, Commander of the R.A.F. depot in Aboukir,
had informed me that, when flying over the Bay of Aboukir, one could see
something in the form of a horseshoe under the water. I asked the fishermen in
the village whether they knew of the existence of some old ruins in that area;
they informed me that at one particular point some ruins were to be found
covering an area of approximately feddan (2,100 meters), including some
thirty to forty columns, and that about 200 meters from there towards the shore,
covering an area of approximately 2 feddans (8,400 meters) lay the foundations
of ancient buildings along with some columns. The first site was pinpointed by
my engineer as being at 1,800 meters out in the bay, to the east of El Ramleh
Fort, on which stands the water reservoir of the R.A.F. camp.
On Friday 5 May 1933, having obtained the help of a diver, I went to
the place in question, along with Professors Breccia and Adriani, and Dr PuyHaubert. After having measured the depth of the water and found it to be 5
10

meters, the diver went down and confirmed beyond any doubt the presence
of several marble columns and others, probably of red granite. From time to
time, he brought up some remains to the surface, among which was the white
marble head of a statue. When the latter had been cleaned, much to our surprise,
Professor Breccia declared it to be the head of a statue of Alexander the Great.
The head is about one foot tall (0.305 meter) indicating that the statue must
have been slightly larger than life size and according to its shape, its back must
have been fixed to a wall.
Such was our extraordinary and interesting discovery. As for the other
site of ruins, we were unable explore it because it became windy making the
water unclear, so that the diver could not see anything lying under the water.
I must add that, at first, I was under the impression that the ruins pointed out
by Group Captain Cull were of the temple where the head of Alexander had
been found; but later on, when he had been kind enough to have the site he had
discovered photographed and given me copies thereof, I realized that it was
very different and much closer to the shore than the temple, because it is about
450 meters from the coast, rather than 1,800 meters like the other site.
During last summer, I had my engineer explore the bay on several
occasions, which led to the discovery of other ruins:
1. A temple located 240 meters from the shore, opposite the beginning of the
present day dike of Aboukir and where, it seems, a dozen columns are to be
found. I had one of them brought up to the surface in order to determine the
kind of stone that the columns were made of. It is the lower part of a broken
column in red granite, and is 2 meters long with a diameter of 75 centimeters
at the base and 74 centimeters at the point where the column was broken.
According to reliable sources, the column must have been about 6 meters
tall, indicating that it must have belonged to a rather important building.
2. In front of the present day dike of Aboukir, there is yet another dike that runs
parallel to it in the sea at a distance varying between 100 and 250 meters
approximately. The first part of the dike is 125 meters long, on dry land and
well built. Its existence would indicate that the present dike is not the first
to have been built and that, probably, others may still exist buried under the
sand.
3. In that same bay there are 7 other stone dikes of varying lengths going from
100 to 250 meters, from 4 to 6 meters wide and about 1 meter high. One
of them, the fifth from the north, is made of bricks, whereas the others are
made of stone. Their position and alignment are irregular and it is difficult
to determine the reason for their construction. Could they have been the
salt drying structures mentioned by Herodotus as being situated within the
Canopic Branch? (Book II, paragraph 113). This is quite possible.
11

4. Some bases of red granite columns were also lifted out of the water from the
same place where the head of Alexander had been found.
Now, what are these ruins and what did they form part of?
The most important concentration of underwater ruins we have discovered
so far within the Bay of Aboukir is the place where the head of Alexander
the Great was found, in addition to another site a short distance to the east of
the first, covering a larger area. That the first is the site of a temple is certain
because of the very nature of its ruins composed mainly of columns and their
bases, as well as because of the presence of the head in question. The other
site, even though covering a larger area, seems to be composed mainly of the
foundations of stone buildings with very few columns. In my opinion, it was
probably a residential area and, consequently, this must be the site of a city with
its temple.
We shall take the town of Canopus and the Canopic Mouth as a basis in
order to determine the origin of these ruins. The location of this city corresponds
to the surroundings of Tewfikeya Fort with its temple of Serapis, indicated by
the granite columns and the mosaic situated south of the fort.
Among the classical authors, Strabo is the one who describes the coast
between Alexandria and the Canopic Mouth of the river in the most detail. He
informs us that just after Canopus was located the city of Heracleum, which
had a temple dedicated to Hercules, and then came the Canopic Mouth marking
the beginning of the Delta (Book XVII, Chapter I, paragraph 18). Concerning
this temple which was situated on the bank, Herodotus tells us that it was no
longer permitted to capture any fugitive slave who had escaped from his master,
if he received the divine stigmata and gave himself up to the god (Book II,
paragraph 113).
Not one of those authors mentions Menouthis, and it is only in the second
century A.D. that we come to know of it for the first time from a fragment of an
inscription according to which a devout pagan dedicated a statue of the Isis of
Menouthis to the Isis of Pharos (Canope, Menouthis, Aboukir, by Pre Faivre,
p. 36). Nevertheless, it must certainly have existed during their time because of
its famous temple dedicated to that goddess. It is however possible that those
authors considered it to be part of the city of Canopus and that its temple, which
had not yet acquired the fame it was to have later on, was eclipsed by the temple
of Serapis in Canopus.
When calculating the distances, Strabo tells us, Another distance of 150
stadia (26,840 meters) separates the Canopic Mouth from the Island of Pharos
(Book XVII, Chapter I, paragraph 6). He goes on to say (paragraph 17) The
city of Canopus is 120 stadia (23,072 meters) from Alexandria by land. Since,
when speaking of the second distance he states that it is by land, it is obvious
that the first distance, even though he does not specify it, must certainly have
been by sea. The starting point of both distances, one from the island and the
12

other from the city, undoubtedly could not have differed much in length, and
the land route must have run parallel to the coast, the same being applicable to
the sea route. Without much risk of error, we can safely say that the difference
between two distances, i.e. 30 stadia (5,768 meters), must have also represented
the distance between the city of Canopus and the Canopic Mouth. Today, the
distance between the temple of Serapis and the mouth, as indicated on the map,
is 6,800 meters, namely one kilometer more than 30 stadia. However, we should
not disregard the fact that the temple of Serapis must have been in the center of
the city, and if we were to move the beginning of our measurement to its eastern
limit, this difference would be considerably reduced or would even disappear.
The stadium used here is the Olympic stadium of 192.27 meters used
for the measurements of Strabo in Egypt, as I stated in my Mmoire sur les
Anciennes Branches du Nil, (Chapter I, Les Anciennes Mesures, p. 3).
What we need to do now is to fix the position of the two missing cities,
each with its own temple: Menouthis with its temple of Isis and Heracleum
with its temple of Hercules. To which of these two cities do the ruins of the city
and temple that we found in the Bay of Aboukir belong? That is what I shall try
to answer by ascertaining the respective locations of the two cities.
When mentioning the distance from Alexandria to Canopus, Ammianus
Marcellinus (Book XXII, Ch. 16) tells us that it measured 12 (Roman) miles.
Apparently, the city contained many comfortable inns, and its air was so pure
and the weather so fair, that a foreigner who only heard the murmur of the breeze
there, would have thought himself transported into a world other than that of men.
In the Life of Severus, Zacharias Scholasticus (Patrologie Orientale, Volume I,
p.17) says that Menouthis was 14 (Roman) miles away from Alexandria and
next to Canopus. This means that there were only two miles (2,960 meters) or
about three kilometers between Canopus and Menouthis. Yet the ruins under
the water are 3,250 meters from the temple of Serapis. Such a difference must
be considered very small and, with the abovementioned reservation that the
temple of Serapis must have stood in the center of the city, we can certainly
attribute those ruins to Menouthis and its temple of Isis.
Now that we have established the position of Menouthis, it becomes
easy to determine that of Heracleum as well, since, according to Herodotus it
stood on the shore and according to Strabo it was close to the Canopic Mouth,
as mentioned above. It is made even easier to determine the position of the city
by Sophronius (Miracles des Saints Cyr et Jean, pp. 39 and 43) who informs us
that there were two miles (2,960 meters) between Menouthis and Heracleum.
By placing it on the map at that distance from the ruins we have attributed to
the first of the two cities, it would mean an additional kilometer approximately
between the second city and the Canopic Mouth which would correspond to
what we have been told by the two ancient authors concerning its position.
13

Now that these positions have been established, we can return to

Menouthis and its two temples.

The City
The origins of Menouthis are fairly obscure. As I stated above, none of
the classical authors mention it, and it is only in the second century A.D. that its
name appears. It certainly must have existed before that date, but since it had not
yet acquired the importance it would later have, it must have been considered
as part of the city of Canopus. It only gained considerable prominence around
the fourth century, thanks to its famous temple of Isis, followed by that of the
Evangelists, of equal fame. In those times, Menouthis was linked to Canopus
by a road lined with villas, baths and other monuments (Dict. dArch. Chr. et
de Lit, Volume III, p. 3218) all of which are now submerged under the Bay of
Aboukir. We know that the city still existed at the time of the Arab invasion
because Sophronius, Patriarch of Jerusalem from 629638 A.D., praises the
miracles of the sanctuary of Saint Cyrus and Saint John which was situated
there at that time. The date of its disappearance remains unknown. Yet, after the
Arab invasion the sanctuary having ceased to function, fell into ruin, leading
most probably to the gradual decline of the city, which must have disappeared
along with it in the same cataclysm.

The Pagan Temple

The pagan temple was dedicated to Isis and stood between the dune to
the west and the sea to the east. It was renowned for its miraculous cures.
This fame attracted a huge clientele from which the city of Menouthis greatly
benefited. Visitors to the temple included not only the sick, but people in
good health whose behavior was considered scandalous. When paganism was
vanquished and the emperors strove towards its abolishment, Canopus and
Menouthis were not spared. In Canopus, the temple of Serapis was destroyed
by Patriarch Theophilus (385412) who, in its place built the Monastery of
Penitence entrusted to the Pachomian monks of Tabennisi. As for the temple of
Isis which had survived it, the same patriarch gave the order to build a church
dedicated to the Evangelists in Menouthis close to the pagan temple, with the
aim of bringing about the ruin of this temple; however he died before realizing
his objective.
14

The triumph of Christianity having failed to diminish the great reputation

of the Sanctuary of the Goddess to which the crowds still flocked, Patriarch
Cyril (412444), the successor of the previous patriarch, resolved to replace the
idolatrous cult with devout Christian practices. To achieve this, on 28 June 414
he had the bodies of the martyrs Cyrus and John transferred from the Basilica of
Saint Mark in Alexandria to the Church of the Evangelists in Menouthis. Soon
enough, miraculous cures brought crowds of pilgrims from Alexandria, Egypt,
Libya and all over the world, thus overshadowing the fame of the Temple of
Isis. As of that moment, Isis was condemned to disappear; her statue and altar
were overthrown; the pagan temple was abandoned and soon fell into ruin.
Abandoned by men, besieged by the sands, it gradually disappeared. It even
seems that some helped to bury it. Whatever the case, by the end of the fifth
century no trace of it was left and the Christian sanctuary had become just as
famous and prosperous as that of the Egyptian goddess.

The Christian Temple

However, this substitution only took place gradually and the pagan cult
did not die a sudden death: it was reduced to going into hiding and continuing its
practices in great secrecy. The population did not forget the happy times when
it lived off the generosity of those who were attracted by the gods of healing.
The temple had disappeared but its servants had organized a mysterious hiding
place in a house that was used to store deities brought from elsewhere. These
deities were revered, they were offered sacrifices and their altars were well kept.
As for the Christians of the city and even the church clerics, they pretended to
be ignorant of this and on occasion knew how to obtain a good price for their
silence.
This state of affairs lasted for some time until a pagan student named
Paralios, to whom the Christian doctrine appealed, was nevertheless attracted
to visit Menouthis in order to consult the oracles. He was displeased by the
answers given to him by the oracles, so he then spoke of Isis in disparaging
terms which earned him a severe beating from his comrades. Furious at this, he
revealed the hiding place, from which a collection of various idols of all kinds
was removed, in particular, dogs, cats, monkeys, crocodiles and reptiles. Some
of these idols were burnt then and there, and the rest were loaded onto the backs
of twenty camels and sent to Alexandria where they suffered the same fate.
Such an execution drew attention to Menouthis which, now deprived of the
goddess Isis, succeeded to attract wealth by a different kind of pilgrimage, and
once again witnessed the arrival of the sick and the crowds drawn by the reputed
miraculous cures. From the fifth century onwards, it had become common
15

practice and people came from all the provinces of the Empire. Sophronius
of Damascus, Patriarch of Jerusalem (629638), came to that city when he
was a monk, between the years 610 and 620 and was cured of an eye ailment.
His gratitude led him to compile a collection of sixty miracles that took place
there during his time. He also left us a full description of the temple, which
I am reproducing here because it is as interesting to us as that of its pagan
counterpart, also submerged in the Bay of Aboukir.
Following is the description (Dict. dArch. Chr. et de Lit., Volume I,
pp.11131114):
The sanctuary was situated between the coast to the east and a hill of
sand to the west. Sailors could see it from the open sea. It was surrounded by
an enclosure with an entrance in the side facing the sea. Outside the enclosure,
to the right of the door, stood a fountain bearing the names of the patrons of
the church. Inside the enclosure, stood the church with its portico; the house of
the deacon and his family was adjoining to the basilica. The rooms below and
on the first floor reserved for the sick, were designed to accommodate one or
two persons and they were often all occupied. The baths of the saints, with their
surrounding steam rooms were also always occupied. The bursar, the deacon,
the assistant deacon, the guardian of confessions, porters, convalescents
who were well enough to give a helping hand when needed, poor patients,
rich patients carried on stretchers, healthy people who had come to pray,
pilgrims and some fishermen constituted both the permanent and the transient
population. The bodies of the two martyrs, as well as the surgical probe of Saint
Cyrus who had practiced that profession, were preserved there. The oil from
the lamp burning in front of the tomb was distributed. Commemorative plaques
of the most outstanding cures were on display. A former prefect by the name of
Nemesion had had the walls adjoining the confessional covered with marble,
on which could be seen the figures of Christ, Saint John the Baptist and Saint
Cyrus, before whom the donor would celebrate the grace he had received.
Saint Cyrus and Saint John were invoked for the sick, for ship wrecks, for
the harvest, to ward off spells, to cure infertile women etc.
Soon after the visit of Sophronius, the pagan Persians, having invaded
Egypt, captured Alexandria also and destroyed all the temples situated to the
west of the city while sparing those to the east, including the sanctuary of Saint
Cyrus and Saint John (Patr. Or., Volume I, pp.485 and 487). Nevertheless it is
more than likely that, even though spared, it suffered greatly from the change of
rulers in the country, leading to its ruin. Was it then, or at the time of the Arab
invasion which followed soon after the Persian invasion, that the bodies of the
two saints were taken to Rome? It is difficult to say, although it is certain that
they were transferred at that period, and the fact that Egypt was taken over by the
16

Arabs whose religion was different from the one practiced by those who visited
the sanctuary, brought about its final ruin. Nothing is left of it today, save the
name of Aboukir. It is even more probable, considering its fame, that the name
had already been applied to Menouthis, and that when that city disappeared, it
was transferred to the village called Aboukir today.

Conclusion
From all of the above, we can conclude that an important part of the
Egyptian territory on which stood two cities, each with a temple of great renown,
as well as a part of the largest branch of the Nile in antiquity, are now to be found
under the sea. What is most surprising about this is that such a cataclysm took
place during recorded history, yet not one author mentions it. Part of this even
took place during the middle of the medieval period. The upheaval seems to
have taken place during at least two periods, or perhaps more. Yet, as mentioned
above, during the first century A.D. Strabo described the coast by saying that
after Canopus came Heracleum, and then the Canopic Mouth followed by the
Delta. Consequently, the sea was beyond this mouth. Menouthis, according to
its location determined by us, was situated between Canopus and Heracleum
and was not next to the sea. Sophronius, at the beginning of the seventh century
A.D., when describing the Church of the Evangelists in Menouthis, tells us that
it was by the sea. This indicates that at that time, Heracleum and the Canopic
Mouth no longer existed, having disappeared between these two periods. This
is rather extraordinary because if Menouthis and its temple had been abandoned
and fallen into ruin after the transfer of the bodies of Saint Cyrus and Saint John
to Rome, followed by the Arab invasion, and if this disappearance took place
unnoticed, the same cannot be said of the disappearance of Heracleum and the
Canopic Mouth. Their disappearance took place in front of Menouthis and its
temple at a time of prosperity and activity for the latter, and before the very
eyes of historians and others who frequented them. We are dealing here with a
truly inexplicable situation.
Having said that, what could have been the causes of the cataclysm?
In my opinion, there could only have been two possibilities: either the
level of the land subsided, or, the sea level rose. But which was it?
Most of those who have examined the matter, believe that the cause of
all upheavals of the kind that took place in the country originates in ground
subsidence. Personally, I only partly agree with them because I believe that
both causes could have brought about changes such as the ones which occurred
in the coastal zone of the country. Further inland, we must attribute the changes
to the rising level of the sea in some cases, while others, which do not concern
17

us here, can be explained by a natural rise of the level of the land due to the silt
deposited by the Nile.
In the case which concerns us now, both causes have undoubtedly played
a role. The ruins of the temple are to be found five meters under the water, and if
we agree that it was originally three meters above sea level, this would amount
to a difference of eight meters between then and now. We cannot possibly claim
that the sea level has risen that much. Had it done so, this would have entailed
repercussions in other countries of the Mediterranean Basin, which I do not
believe occurred.
Having said that, let us go back into the city. I shall take as an example
the hypogea of Kom El Shogafa. Nowadays, they are flooded by water, the
level of which is 0.37 meter above sea level according to a recent measurement.
As the difference with the sea level is minimal and could disappear with the
movement of the tide, we can consider that, practically speaking, this water is
at sea level. These hypogea were dug into the limestone layer which must be
very deep and, consequently, cannot have subsided allowing such an infiltration
of water from the sea. On the other hand, it is likewise unthinkable that these
tombs were dug out under water so that the bodies were submerged, and that
the sea level at that time was the same as today. Surely the tombs would have
been dug out at a shallower level. Therefore, I believe that it is clear that, in this
case, the rising sea level must have been the reason why these hypogea were
flooded with water.
However, I am barely touching the question here and it needs more
extensive study. The matter cannot be settled by the opinion of one single
individual. I shall, therefore, stop here hoping that I have not tested your
patience too much.

introduction
Evidence of Prince Omar Toussouns contribution to both the discovery
of a large portion of the ancient Alexandrian heritage and to its preservation
is shown by records at the Greco-Roman Museum of Alexandria in addition
to scientific documents including books and journals. His efforts extended
to ancient Canopus (Aboukir), on the coast to the west of Alexandria, and to
ancient Mareia, located on the southern shore of Lake Mareotis.
Prince Toussoun assisted archeologists and scholars, and facilitated and
participated in archeological excavations on his own lands in Aboukir and
Mamoura. However, the princes efforts were not restricted to facilitating the
discovery of antiquities, but also to restoring them. In 1934, he restored antiquities
in Kasr El Katig and in Mareotis. He also wrote about archeology, and donated
to the Greco-Roman Museum valuable antiquities that were either discovered
by him or discovered on his lands by others. Prince Toussoun did not sell them
at a time when buying, selling and exporting antiquities was not prohibited
by law. Not only did he donate antiquities, but he also restored any item that
needed restoration. His accomplishments in this field were unprecedented in
the history of the royal family of Mohamed Ali and in Egypt as whole.
Andr Bernand mentions Prince Toussoun in his book Alexandrie la
Grande, as one of the most famous Alexandrian figures of the time who helped
the great archeologist G. Hogarth in his excavations on Kom El Dikka hill in
1895 (where the polish team later discovered Roman baths in 1960).

Toussoun was one of the pioneers in supporting underwater excavations
in Aboukir Bay before the establishment of the Department of Underwater
Archeology. His efforts made him one of the great amateur excavators, along
with Maria Amilia Christine, queen of Naples, who uncovered Herculaneum
and facilitated the discovery of Pompeii, Schliemann who uncovered Troy
and Mycenae, and Theodore M. Davis who uncovered the tomb of Iouiya and
Touiyou in the Valley of the Kings in Thebes.
Excavations in Canopus, which were financed and facilitated by the
prince, enriched the Greco-Roman Museums collections of antiquities from
ancient Alexandria. E. Breccia worked on the princes lands during 19241925, and for several years after. This resulted in more great discoveries that
were donated to the museum. For this reason, Breccia allocated room 22 of the
museum to the antiquities of Canopus and named it the Prince Omar Toussoun
Gallery. Breccia mentioned this fact in the French version of the museums
guidebook.
In 1917 the prince also helped Daninos Pasha in Ramleh Fort to uncover
the Bath of Cleopatra, known to archeologists today as the Bath of Aboukir.

23

The recent discovery, using modern technology, of the sunken antiquities

of ancient Canopus, has been in a way attributed to the initial efforts of Prince
Toussoun in uncovering ancient Canopus and its two neighboring towns of
Menouthis and Heracleum. His work in this field also led to the discovery in
Aboukir Bay of the white marble bust of Alexander the Great (exhibit 23848),
which measures 30 cm.
It is fortunate that large parts of the legendary ancient city of Canopus
lay in the princes lands, otherwise they would have remained undiscovered, or
at least not found in their current well preserved condition. This archeological
site is known as the West Beach (or the West Temple). Its western region,
currently known as Mamoura, has greatly shrunk over the past few years due to
environmental reasons and the increase in population.
The prince was the Honorary president of the Royal association of
archeology from 1905-1944, the longest time anyone held this position. These
thirty nine years, considered the golden years of the association and of the
Greco-Roman Museum, resulted in increased and unprecedented archeological
excavations and discoveries in Alexandria, Aboukir, Mareotis, and Wadi
Natroun. The association celebrated its 50th anniversary inside kom El shogafa
Cemetery, and decorated its pillars with flowers and sweet basil. However, the
prince was unable to attend the celebration because he was ill.
The prince owned a library in his Bacos palace, which contained a rare
collection of books on heritage and archeology. This library was considered
the third largest and most valuable in Alexandria, after the municipal library
and the library of the Greco-Roman Museum. The University of Alexandria
had not yet been founded. The prince donated it for public use long before the
1952 revolution and the orders which followed to add the princes library to the
municipal library and the Library of the Greco-Roman Museum. The library
cataloguing appendix attached to this catalogue depicts the value of the princes
collection. It holds priceless books in the field of archeology and heritage.
The attached catalogue of antiquities reflects the administrative display
procedures of the museum followed then. The prince in fact donated a larger
number of artifacts than what is listed in the catalogue. In 1985, two coffins,
the remains of some pillars and the symbol of justice were found on Omar
Toussouns land in Mamoura. After their discovery, being in a bad condition
they were left in an old deserted building known as El Islah building. The two
coffins are Roman, dating back to the third century, and are made from purple
granite. Similar coffins in the museum were found in other archeological sites.
It was presumed that there was no place for these antiquities in the museum,
so they were initially left on the princes lands until they were donated to the
Greco-Roman Museum, and were then transferred to the archeological site in
Chatby.

All items listed in the catalogue are merely referred to as donations by

the prince, and do not include any historical information. Their origins have
been investigated using the following source:

E. Breccia, Le Muse grco-romain, 1925-31

Omar Toussoun, Les ruines sous-marines de la Baie dAboukir, in the
Bulletin de la Socit Royale dArchologie dAlexandrie, Numro 29.
E. Breccia, Monuments de lgypte grco-romaine
E. Breccia, Antiquits dcouvertes Maamourah, in the Bulletin de la
Socit Royale dArchologie dAlexandrie, Numro 8.

The catalogue includes treasures such as the marble statue of

Harpocrates (exhibit 18572) representing a smiling, naked child, the eyes of
which are reminiscent of Buddhist art. This statue is unique in Egypt. It also
shows a terracotta lamp (exhibit 18755) painted with scenery from daily life
in a gymnasium. Item number 25774 is an important naos inscribed with the
ancient Egyptian astronomical calendar that goes back to the time of Pharaoh
Nectanebos (380-362 BC). The French expedition found a part of it and recorded
it in the fifth volume of the Description of Egypt, and later Prince Toussoun
discovered the main part and donated it. By strange coincidence the FrancoEgyptian archeological team recently found a third part.
Further efforts are required to identify the topographic features of the sites
where the artifacts listed in this catalogue were found. Listed in this catalogue are
the artifacts whose historical sources have been certified in previous references.
all these items were discovered in Aboukir (ancient Canopus and Mamoura) or
the El Dakhla Oasis. The western borders of Aboukir and the eastern borders of
Mamoura are not archeologically defined as they overlap.
I would like to thank all those who have helped me to produce this
catalogue, especially the museums deputy director, Magda Ghali Shenouda,
the museums curator, Aurore Awad Abdel Shahid. Items the origins of which
have not been discovered are subject for further study in the future.
