Craig Wallace brought in a
basket of blankets to use in the
sanctuary when the weather was
cold and we had no heat.
They have all disappeared and we are
wondering where they went. If you took one
or know someone who did take one, could you
please return them. They belong to Craig and
Alice and some of them have special meaning.
Thank you .

Accessing FCCF's Recorded
Sunday Services
Sometimes we wish we could
hear a worship service we had to miss, and now
that's easier than ever.
Each Sunday's service is being made
available online immediately at the conclusion of
the service. You may play it on your phone,
computer, or tablet device anytime convenient for
you, or you may download, save it for later, or
share it with others.
The place to access a list of each Sunday's
services online is at:
http://tinyurl.com/FCCF-Services
That location is also now on our church's
website at http://fullertonfirstchristian.org under
Live Broadcasts.
(If accessing something "online" is not
familiar to you or you do not yet have access to a
smartphone or a computer, please call the church
office for assistance. There has been discussion
about sending out a volunteer church-related form
of Gospel-Geek-Squad just to assist people finding
our website and recorded services if there is
enough interest for such assistance,)

Camp Scholarship Fund
Growing up, going to church camp at Loch
Leven was always my favorite week of the
summer. It was a week of family groups,
rambunctious camp songs, new friends, and most
importantly, deepening my relationship with God.
Every year after coming back from camp, I felt
invigorated to get more involved in the life of our
local church.
Camp not only helped solidify my
relationship with God from an early age, but also
defined my career path. The summer after 4th
grade, many of my camp counselors at Loch Leven
were from Chapman University. After camp, I
came home (still in 4th grade, mind you) and told
my parents that I planned on attending Chapman
University. At the time, they laughed, but now 14
years and three degrees from Chapman later, I can
conclusively say that Loch Leven has defined both
my personal and professional life.
Unfortunately, this year our camp
scholarship fund is running low. Every youth in
our congregation deserves the opportunity to go to
camp that I did. I encourage each of you to donate
to the camp scholarship fund, as well as send your
children to camp. It is an investment that pays back
ten-fold, from the smiles and laughter after picking
your kids up from camp, to the passion they feel
about God and the life of the congregation. And
who knows, we may even have a future Chapman
student among us.

Crop Hunger Walk Report
The 2015 Fullerton CROP
Hunger Walk is history. Our
congregation had 13 Walkers and those
Walkers raised $3,516 of the total of $25,976.50
that was raised by all of the participating
congregations.
Our walkers included: Isaiah Areyan,
Heidi Beal, John Cairns and his trusty dog,
Donald, Phil Forbes, Melissa Fought, Randy
Langston, Ed Linberg, Melody Martinez,
Livia Spontak, P.J. and Nolan Vannoy, Craig
Wallace and Barry Woodbridge. Jeanne
Oakden collected lots of funds, but she did her
walk in the company of her employer on
Monday, April 27. Donna Woodbridge also
collected funds for this event, but a bum knee
kept her on the sidelines during the walk itself.
Marguerite Beal made several trips around the
block with her two grandchildren while our
walkers were out on the route, so she was
another participant, though not one that was
officially registered. Two more people from
our congregation played a very important role
in this years CROP Hunger Walk. Luanne
Bailey and Jill Scott helped to count the
money that was turned in, as well as verify the
online giving for the event. Thanks to all of
our walkers, volunteers and, most important,
our donors! Special thanks to Phil Forbes and
Randy Langston who, once again, coordinated
this activity for our congregation. In addition,
Michael Shepherd, a Pathways of Hope Staff
member, coordinated the entire event. Michael,
his wife and their young son, are regular
visitors in our worship services.
If youd like to support this event you
may still do so until the end of July. You can
go online and make a gift in the name of our
team. Go to CROP Hunger Walk, then click on
California; Fullerton; and donate to a team. If
you prefer to write a check you may do that as
well. Make the check payable to our church,
but write CWS/CROP or Fullerton CROP
Hunger Walk on the memo line. Well see that
it gets sent to CWS/CROP in the name of our
congregation. Finally, in addition to the funds
raised by our walkers leading up to the event,
we provided a $500 gift as a sponsor of this
years Fullerton CROP Hunger Walk from the
proceeds generated by our Tri-Tip Sales during
the 2014 Downtown Market.
The Outreach Ministry
Offering of Letters
This May, our
congregation will be participating
in the annual Offering of Letters
through Bread for the World. This years theme
is Feed Our Children, and focuses on closing
the hunger gap in the United States, where 1 in
5 children live at risk for hunger. Every 5 years,
Congress must review and reauthorize
childrens nutrition programs, and these
programs are up for review in 2015. This year,
we are asking members of our church to write
personalized letters to Congress about antihunger legislation and policies that impact
children.
During the month of May, I will be
visiting vario us small groups in our
congregation for letter-writing activities.
Additionally, on May 31 after church, we will
be hosting a letter-writing event for all
members who wish to attend in Chapman
Lounge. In next weeks Caller, a sample letter
will be provided for those who would like to
write letters from the comfort of their own
home. For more information about the Offering
of Letters, please contact Cambria FindleyGrubb at
[email protected]. Lets close the
hunger gap and build a better world for our
children.

Chapel on Wheels
Fundraiser
Chapel on Wheels is holding their
monthly fundraiser at Pollys on Monday, May
11. Flyers will be available on the counter in
the office. Pick one up and eat anytime during
the day or evening and 20% of your bill will be
donated to Chapel on Wheels Weekday
program. This money is used to keep the
trailers in working order and purchase
curriculum for the classes.

Habitat for Humanity wrote this on
April 17, 2015:
Thank you for making dreams come true!
With First Christian Church of Fullertons gift of
$125 to Habitat for Humanity of Orange County,
you are helping us to create a world where
everyone has a decent place to live.
Maria Mazzenga Avellaneda, Executive
Director, Pathways of Hope, wrote this on 4/20/15:
On behalf of the Pathways of Hope Board
of Directors, our dedicated staff, tireless volunteers
and the homeless and hungry we serve, I want to
thank you for your generous donation of $135. That
you for your help in supporting our programs.
Pierre U. Ferrari, President and CEO of
Heifer International, wrote this on April 1:
Thank you for your generosity and gift to
Heifer International. The end of extreme poverty is
within our grasp, and your help matters. Your
commitment to helping others gives hope to
families who once struggled
with hunger and provides the foundation for
strong farming families.
The gifts to O.C. Habitat for Humanity and
Pathways of Hope were part of our quarterly
giving to support these two ministries from the
10% figure that the Outreach Ministry receives
from our weekly budgeted giving.
The gift to Heifer International was from
the proceeds of the 2014 Tri-Tip Project at
Fullertons Farmers Market.
The full text of these three letters is posted
on the bulletin board for you to read. We are most
grateful for your continuing and generous support
of the work of the Outreach Ministry.

General Assembly is Coming
Plan to go to Columbus,
Ohio, July 18 22 to join the 2015 General
Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of
Christ. ) Not only will there be worship unlike
any other gathering, but the learning
communities are as rich as any conference you
might attend elsewhere. Go to ga.disciples.org
and look through the 40 page pamphlet
describing all the events. They are incredible.
We are allowed four voting delegates in
addition to clergy members of our
congregation. So if you are planning on
attending General Assembly, please let Donna
know so we can get you registered to vote.
Registration Deadline coming
May 8
For several weeks weve been
telling you about the 2nd Annual Sr. Adult
Retreat set for Loch Leven on May 19 and 20.
The deadline to register for this event is Friday,
May 8th. If youd like to participate in this
event, you need to pick up a registration form
from the counter in the office and send it in
right away.
We have 6 of our members already
registered for this retreat. They are Barbara
and Gordon Fenters, Ed and Mariette
Linberg, plus Barry and Donna Woodbridge.
If you remember the old Campbell
Lodge at Loch Leven and you havent seen the
newly refurbished Campbell Lodge, be sure to
register for this overnight event. You will not
regret being part of this years Regional
Church Sr. Adult Retreat sponsored by the
Older Adult Ministry Committee which
includes several members of our congregation.
Barbara Fenters is the Chair, Mike Vaughan is
the Treasurer, and Ed Linberg is serving as the
Retreat Coordinator. Wed love to have more
Sr. Adults from our congregation be part of
this Retreat! So, who is going to join the
Fenters, Linbergs and Woodbridges at this
event? How about YOU?
O sing unto the LORD a new song: sing unto the LORD, all the earth.[Psalm
96:1]
Have you ever stood up to sing the hymn, and discovered you dont know it? In that moment
you have experienced every singers nightmare: As the singer stands before an audience to perform,
s/he doesnt know, or has completely forgotten, the music scheduled. Usually Barbara and I will
quickly dive into the hymnbook, and read the notes and words. But we were not near a hymnbook.
So our side of the sanctuary did not have our help in singing out the hymn. We all just stood their
mumbling! Its great having the words on the screen; however, you cant sing them if you dont
know the tune!
This is going to happen occasionally when the one selecting the hymns is more interested in
theological purity and if the words speak to the lesson of the day. But avoiding all of the songs in our
hymnbook which we dont know misses the point of hymn singing which is to sing hymns which
reflect the subject and attitude of the day. We can take a lesson from our praise team. They come
together before each service to rehearse the praise music. The praise songs are scheduled in a way
that allows the team to teach us new songs while reinforcing the songs we have just learned. This
practice ought to be duplicated for our hymn singing. When hymn tunes which are new to the
congregation are scheduled, the choir could practice them before the service so that they can truly
lead us in the service. Someone could be on microphone loudly singing each line and have us repeat
each line. When we come to a hymn which is new to the congregation, that hymn should be
scheduled for at least three more Sundays in the next two months.
Please note that I am not suggesting that hymns unfamiliar to the congregation should not be
scheduled. How can we sing a new song if we dont know it? That verse in Psalms 96 mandates us
to include new hymns in our worship all the time. The congregation has to decide if it will be
willing to learn the new hymns. I worked for a large downtown church where it was decided that a
committee be formed for the purpose of publishing a new hymnbook for the congregation. The
committee threw out all of the hymns they didnt know. Then they threw out the hymns which did
not conform to their conservative social agenda or their somewhat liberal theological position. The
church finally published the hard-back hymnbook for the sanctuary. It was about one-quarter the
size of the average church hymnal. They were so proud of the fact they were able to eliminate all of
the hymns that just took up space in the hymnbook. But what an odd way of facilitating Psalm 96:1!
There was not a new song in the book!
If you have other ideas on this subject, I hope you will join us on Monday night when the
Worship Ministry Team meets to discuss it. For now, I hope God leads you to try your best to raise
your voice to the new songs in worship on any given Sunday. See you in church!
In love,
Bob Hasty, Worship Team Chair
