Calcium Hypochlorite

PPG Industries produces high quality calcium hypochlorite. Two forms are
available. One is a dry, free-flowing
granular material readily soluble in
water, and the other is a slow-release
tablet. Both contain a minimum of 68%
available chlorine.
Zappit calcium hypochlorite granules and slow-release Pittabs -inch
calcium hypochlorite tablets find a
wide application in chlorinating swimming pools.
Super Zappit calcium hypochlorite
granules are specifically designed for
swimming pool shock or superchlorination treatment and contain a minimum
73% available chlorine.
Induclor calcium hypochlorite
granules and -inch tablets are
designed for industrial and municipal
treatment.
All products are EPA-registered.

General Applications
Calcium hypochlorite is a widely used
chlorine compound that is highly effective
against bacteria, algae, slime, fungi and
other harmful and objectionable microorganisms. Since calcium hypochlorite as a
solution is a very efficient killer of virtually
all bacteria, algae and other objectionable
micro-organisms, it is used as a standard for
comparison testing of other sanitizing chemicals.
While calcium hypochlorite is used primarily to chlorinate swimming pool, spa and
hot tub water, and to treat water supplies
and sewage, it is also frequently used as a
bleaching agent and sanitizer in industrial
applications.
Calcium hypochlorite granules, tablets,
or solutions can be used for continuous
chlorination or applied manually.
Swimming Pool, Spa and Hot Tub
Operators use calcium hypochlorite as a
routine sanitizer to kill and prevent the
growth of algae, bacteria, and other
microorganisms. It is also widely used as a
shock treatment to destroy organic contamination in pool water, thereby improving the
water clarity. Strong calcium hypochlorite
solutions serve as disinfectants for cleaning
pool sides and bottoms, decks, diving
boards, ladders, floats, locker and shower
room floors and benches, sinks and toilets.
Municipal Water Treatment
Municipalities use calcium hypochlorite in
place of chlorine gas or liquid bleach to

purify water. It is also effective for treating

wells; sanitizing new water mains; controlling algae, especially sudden growths, in
reservoirs, filters and other equipment;
treating sewage and controlling odors.
PPGs Induclor granular and -inch tableted
calcium hypochlorite are NSF 60 certified
for drinking applications.
Wastewater Treatment Calcium
hypochlorite is used to treat wastewater
effluents under controlled conditions by
textile mills, paper mills, tanneries, food
processing plants and more.
Other Applications Other uses for
calcium hypochlorite include sanitizing food
and beverage containers and production
equipment in dairies, restaurants, hospitals
and farms. Calcium hypochlorite also is
used to control algae and slime in commercial and industrial cooling water systems.

Grades and Forms

PPG Industries markets granular calcium
hypochlorite under several trademarks
including Induclor, Zappit and Super Zappit.
PPG also manufactures -inch (7 gram)
Induclor and Pittabs tablets to provide slow
release of chlorine.

Induclor granules and -inch tablets are for

industrial and municipal applications. Both are
NSF 60 certified for potable water use.

Health Hazards
Keep calcium hypochlorite out of the
reach of children. Calcium hypochlorite is
harmful if swallowed and may be fatal.
Because calcium hypochlorite is a strong
oxidant, it may produce chemical burns. Do
not allow the product to get in eyes, on skin
or on clothing. Do not inhale the product.
Eye or Skin contact: Flush with plenty
of water for at least 15 minutes. Remove
clothing if it is contaminated. For eye contact, or if skin irritation occurs, get immediate medical attention.
Inhalation: Remove person(s) affected
to fresh air. If signs of irritation or discomfort occur, take the person to a hospital or
physician immediately.

Calcium Hypochlorite
Swallowing: If the person is conscious
and not having convulsions, give him or her
large quantities or water to drink. Do not
induce vomiting. Take the person to a hospital or physician immediately. If the person is
unconscious or having convulsions, do not
attempt to induce vomiting or give anything
by mouth to that person. Get medical attention immediately.
Additional health and safety information
is contained in the Material Safety Data
Sheet.

Handling and Storage

Before using calcium hypochlorite, read
all label directions on the container. All handling and storage directions on the container should be followed to ensure accidentfree use of the chemical.
Do not skid or drop calcium hypochlorite
containers. Store the chemical in its original
container in a cool, dry, well-ventilated
place. Be sure the calcium hypochlorite container is tightly closed when not in use.
Keep calcium hypochlorite away from lighted tobacco products.
In case of fire, drench with water. Since
calcium hypochlorite supplies oxygen,
attempts to smother the fire with a wet
blanket, carbon dioxide or dry chemical
extinguisher are ineffective.
Be sure to wash hands after handling
calcium hypochlorite.
Use only a clean, dry scoop (dedicated
for this use) made of metal or plastic each
time calcium hypochlorite is taken from the
container. Add calcium hypochlorite only to
water. A fire or explosion may result if
calcium hypochlorite is mixed with other
