MONMOUTHSHIRE COUNTY
COUNCIL intends to make an
Order under S14 of the Road
Traffic Regulation Act 1984.
The order is proposed to
facilitate essential site
investigation and to locate 2 x
rising main sewers. The effect
of the order will be to close
Station Road, Caldicot.
Diversion: Travel in a
Northerly direction along
Station Road until its junction
with the B4245. Travel in an
Easterly direction along the
B4245 until its junction with
Blackbird Road. Travel in a
Southerly direction along
Blackbird Road until its junction with the unnamed access
road to Caldicot Station and
vice versa.
The Order will come into force
on the 25th May 2015 until no
later than the 21st June 2015.
By virtue of Section 16(1) of
the Road Traffic Regulation
Act 1984 a person who
contravenes, or who uses or
permits the use of a vehicle in
contravention of, a restriction
or prohibition imposed under
Section 14 of the Act shall be
guilty of an offence.

to the ballistic Golf R, and
it might have just made a
brilliant everyday performance car even better.
Elongating the Golf s
profile gives it a more elegant, classic silhouette.
Our feelings are that the
optional (but more attractive) five dual-spoke
wheels are worth adding.
Adding an impressive
225 litres of boot space
is only part of the story.
As an estate this version
gives you the option to slot
things like household appliances in without necessarily having to drop the
back seats.
Huge
acceleration
comes courtesy of grippy
tyres, four-wheel drive
and 296bhp. The irregu-

lar chorus of chatter

from the exhaust adds
tangible excitement to
the experience far in excess of what the Golf GTI
can muster. De-restricted

super-picky theres only
one black mark we can lay
against the R estates performance.
No matter how hard we
tried on the superb Ascari Race Resort track, we
couldnt get the R to feel
rearward balanced. Its so
neutral, stable and confidence-inspiring, but its
impossible to recreate a
rear-wheel drive feel. That
might put a dampener on
some peoples enthusiasm.
To add the estate boot is
a mere 695 box-ticking
exercise, so why wouldnt
you?On the other hand, it
already costs more than a
BMW M135i.
Make no mistake, the
Golf R estate is a laughout-loud marvellous eve-

ryday car. It ticks most

of the weekday boxes
with ease and laps up
high-adrenaline action on
country roads or the race
track at the weekend.

Modernised but its cramped in the back

AT LONG last the C-Max, Ford
of Europes third-best-selling
model, has been brought into
line with the One Ford programme, so there are new
looks, new technologies and a
simplified cabin.
This, the seven-seat Grand
C-Max, has had the same upgrades. Smaller revisions have
made their way in too, like
the reinstatement of a spare
wheel in lieu of the (generally
useless) tyre repair kit.
The Grand C-Max loses some
of the five-seat versions looks,
for which you can blame the
higher roof line and metal
channels to allow the rear
doors to slide backwards.
Despite the brilliantly practical sliding rear doors things
are rather cramped in the very
back. The middle row can slide
forwards to expand the nonexistent foot space back there,
but then that cuts down on
space for those in row two.
There are two overwhelming
and lasting impressions from
a drive in the Grand C-Max.
The first is how pleasantly
well connected it feels to the
road.
The second is there is too
much interference from the
new active safety systems.
Graphics blink away with
readouts of your proximity
to other cars, steering wheel
vibrations warn you when
youre at the edge of your lane
and annoying beeps and flashing warnings tell you when the
car thinks youre going to hit

something, which, invariably,

youre not.
The pricing structure centres around a core of likely
volume-sellers between 21,000
and 25,000, making it a relatively affordable route into a
well-specified seven-seater.
Clearly, families are the target market. Generous parents
with only two kids will appreciate the ability to ferry extra
young uns around, and productive mums and dads with
limited parking space at home
will appreciate the Grand CMaxs neat dimensions.
This car summed up in a single word advanced.
If this car was a car designer
it would leave itself largely as
it is, but it might ditch some of
the electronic interruptions.
