The purpose of this The Behavior Management

Strategies Package

The purpose of this package is to provide teachers with

some ideas and strategies on how to help students who
have difficulty controlling their behavior, so they can be
successful in the classroom. I realize that all students are
very different, they have different needs, and not all
strategies will be successful for all students, so you may
need to use trial and error for each individual student.
These are some strategies that have been successful in
my classroom I hope they help you and you students too!

Tips for helping difficult behaviour kids be successful

Never get mad, always
stay calm. Always look
for positive moments or
accomplishments to
compliment the
student and show you
care.

Become allies with

parents/ guardians
from day one. And find
reasons to make calls
home to give positive
updates about the
student.

Find out what the child

likes and run with it. If
the student loves
hockey, as a reward for
good behaviour play
hockey for P.E.

Document all
behaviours.

Have a spot in the classroom for the student to

put themselves in when they are feeling mad,
sad, or frustrated. Then you know they need
some cool off time and they will come back
when they are ready.

Have the student write

or draw about what's
bothering them.

Give the student choice. On a piece of paper

give the student 3 other jobs they can do if they
are frustrated or upset. This might be: 1.
Journaling 2. Silent Reading. 3. Catch up in their
Math Book. Have a meeting with the student and
decide together what the tasks are?

Behavior Management Goal Sheet

I have created this page so it is editable because each student

is so different they are all going to have different behavior they
need to work on. For example a goal might be: staying in their
seat, completing work on time, keeping hands to him/her self,
using an inside voice, not throwing things, keeping work space
tidy.
Because goals need a time frame Ive provided a space for you
and the student to revaluate the goals and whether the goal is
met or if more time is needed for the goal to be met.

Go for a Walk
Cool Off Strategy
Send the student to another teacher, the secretary,
nurse, or another employee at the school with the
letter on the next page in an envelope. You can have the
letter already filled out and prepared in advice. This just
gives the student an opportunity for a brief break, brief
break for you, and it also allows you to give the student
something that will stop the students behavior from
escalating when you notice a trigger being pulled, or
when you notice they are becoming frustrated.

Positive Behavior Sticker Charts

This strategy has been successful for many of students!

1. Each day tape the sticker chart to the students desk. For
students who feel anxious about what comes next on the
daily schedule have a quick morning meeting each day
with that student where the two of you fill out the time
section with the blocks of time the student is working on
their behaviour during.
2. At the end of the day teacher and student have a
discussion about the students behavior and put stickers
next the to the blocks of time in which the behavior was
under control or good.
3. Glue or tape the chart into the home/school
communication book. For parents to see how their childs
day was and to discuss behavior with their child at home.
4. Some of my students have arrangements with parents if
they get 4/5 stickers on each day of the week they get a
slurpee on Friday, or get to play street hockey with Dad

My Three Choices
Some students respond well to be given choice. If they are becoming
frustrated with the job they are doing choice allows them the opportunity
to change thought patterns before their behavior escalates. The key is
that the choices need to be activities that are going to be academically
beneficial. I like reading, journaling, and math catch up.
Beware that if you put in centers, computers, or time in the gym that
choice is going to be the one that the student always picks and youll
have jealousy from the other students and the student might become
behind academically.

I like to have a meeting with the student and explain the reasons for the
choices, when to use the choices, and let the student have some kind of
say in choosing the choices.
Students then get a laminated copy of the choices page.

Home and School Communication Book

The purpose of the home and school communication book is to

have a place where school staff can regularly update parents
about the childs behavior. In order this strategy to be success
you do need strong parent support at home, and you do need
to make writing in this booklet a daily routine.
I have provided various communication book pages so you can
customize your own home and school communication book.
There are pages where you can tape or glue the students
positive behavior sticker sheet for parents to see and there are
also pages where the teacher can write a short comment for
each day of the week for parents about the students behavior.

Behavior Reflection Sheet

Behavior reflection sheets should be filled out by the
student or if the student is unable to fill out the sheet,
it is to be filled out by the teacher during a discussion
with the student.
I usually fill out behavior sheets with students either
during recess or play time so its on their time not on
mine and thats part of the consequence.
