Summary
The story is told alternately by two girls, Jennifer and
Lisa, strangers sharing a room on holiday in Belize,
Central America. The two girls do not get on. The
indecisive Jennifer, a book illustrator from London,
wants to relax, enjoy Belizes wildlife and escape from
her fianc Pete; she is tired of him and has already
been unfaithful with another man called Gary.
The flirty, chatty Lisa, however, wants to escape from
her boring life at home; taking care of her sick mother
and working in her local country pub. She feels jealous
of what she imagines as Jennifers London lifestyle
and trendy fianc. She doesnt realise that the homely
Pete just wants to settle down in the country.
Lisa is looking for a holiday romance, and sets her
sights on the handsome Ian, whose girlfriend Caroline
goes home early from Belize. Lisa does everything in
her power to attract Ians attention, particularly when
she realises that Ian likes Jennifer. However, although
Jennifer finds Ian attractive, she is wary of him and
goes off for a midnight swim with a Belizean man
called Ocean. This is typical of how Jennifer just lets
things happen to her.
Meanwhile, Pete has found out about Gary and leaves
messages for Jennifer; first of all threatening to call
off their engagement and then, when she doesnt
respond, offering her more time. Fearful of losing Ian
if Jennifer is free, Lisa copies Petes phone number out
of Jennifers diary and does her best that evening to get
into Ians arms on the beach.

the effect is spoilt when Ian uses the very same words
that Gary had used to her. She feels guilty about Pete
and runs away. That night, on the rebound, Ian meets
Lisa and kisses her during a midnight swim. To Lisas
disgust, however, he says he must resolve things with
Caroline before going any further, even though he has
already told Jennifer that he and Caroline are finished.
On a riverboat trip next day, Lisa sees Jennifer
growing closer to Ian and, in desperation, phones Pete,
convincing him to fly to Belize at once. Back in Belize
City, Mary, the tour guide, invites Lisa to visit her
Aunt Rose who gives her some motherly advice about
finding a good man.
Meanwhile, Jennifer goes out dancing with Ian. On
her way home from Aunt Roses, Lisa observes them
in a clinch and challenges Ian about his behaviour
to both herself and Jennifer. Ian admits that he is
attracted to both women. The two women abandon
him and return to the hotel.
The incident has brought them closer. Back at the
hotel, Lisa learns that her mother has remarried,
leaving Lisa free to pursue her dream of moving to
London.
The story concludes with Pete arriving in Belize.
Jennifer finishes with him and leaves the city, probably
to find Ocean. Lisa falls head over heels for Pete. She
sets her sights on capturing him and having a wild life
with him in London. The question remains whether
either girl has found a lasting solution to what she is
looking for in her life.

Jennifer finally phones Pete but gets no answer. Later,

she meets Ian on the beach. They share a kiss, but

The story ended with Jennifer staying in Belize/

with Pete in London, which he wanted to leave. It
was not certain that the girls had found the happy
