The opportunity to study under

professors at the forefront of their
respective elds was a real attraction,
and after a visit to the beautiful, sunny
campus, during which I met many
of the friendly and intelligent people
who work and study there, it was
easy to conrm that Pomona was
the place for me.

While the combination of stellar

academics, small faculty-to-student
ratio, friendly student body, and a
great weather all played a role in my
decision, knowing that I was not just
another number on campus was
the deciding factor.

CURRICULUM
The College oers no special

When I was applying to colleges,

ENGAGED STUDENTS

STELLAR
FACULTY

Pomona College is for adventurous,

creative-minded students with the
drive to explore and pursue their
academic passions. Oering 47 majors
and 37 minors, a stellar faculty, small
classes and unmatched resources
supporting student success, Pomona
is widely regarded as one of the
worlds leading liberal arts and sciences institutions. Students studying
at Pomona receive an excellent education in the natural and physical
sciences, social sciences, humanities and ne arts in an academic and
residential environment rich in resources, intellectual collaboration, and
the passionate pursuit of individual interests.
The College enrolls approximately 1,560 students (with roughly 100
studying abroad each semester) and has a student-faculty ratio of 8 to 1.
The average class size of 15 oers students the opportunity to become full
participants in the learning process. High value is placed on the interaction
between teacher and student, with most classes taught as seminars. By
challenging one another and their professors, Pomona students develop
skills in analytical and critical thinking.
Pomona is also a member of the Claremont Consortium, a unique collection of ve undergraduate and two graduate institutions located sidedby-side and aording the wide choice of facilities, events and opportunities
common to larger universities.
All Pomona students are
undergraduates. No graduatelevel programs are oered,
and the College does not enroll students who have already completed a bachelors
degree or the equivalent.

Since Pomona is an entirely undergraduate

institution, there are no graduate students
competing for faculty attention. Even in your
rst year some of your classes may be taught
by some of our most senior professors. Many
of the Colleges most distinguished faculty
teach rst-year seminars, and senior science
faculty often teach introductory lab sessions.
Youll not only learn from extraordinary
professors. Youll get to know them well.
With a student-faculty ratio of 8 to 1 and
about 85 percent of faculty living within ve
miles of campus, face time isnt limited to
classroom and oce hours. Youll nd professors and students in every discipline working
closely in research, as well as interacting in a
range of casual settingsover lunch, on the
playing eld, as participants in a musical ensemble, or just strolling across campus on a
beautiful California day.

TRUE LIBERAL ARTS

A true liberal arts education is the most eective way to prepare yourself
to thrive in a changing world. With intimate classes, a strong curriculum
and deep resources, Pomona is especially well suited to provide students
both the breadth of study that builds intellectual resilience and the depth
of study needed for advancement in a specic eld.
No specic course in the Pomona curriculum is prescribed for graduation. Designed to encourage exploration while providing great freedom of
choice, Pomonas Breadth of Study Requirements include one course in
each of ve areasCreative Expression; Social Institutions and Human
Behavior; History, Values, Ethics and Cultural Studies; Physical and
Biological Sciences; and Mathematical Reasoning.
Central to this rich and empowering intellectual experience is trading
ideas with other exceptional students in an environment that encourages
collegiality, not competition. And with 90% of all classes with fewer than
30 students, it is virtually impossible to get lost in the classroom.

Our students enjoy both the advantages of a

small school, where professors teach every
class, and the opportunities and resources of
a larger university setting of more than 7,000
students. When you add the resources of the
Claremont Colleges (the 7Cs) to everything
Pomona already oers, all told you get more
classes to choose from (2,200), more students to bounce ideas o of (7,000), more
clubs to join (227 and counting)and more
dining halls to eat in (7).
Benets of being in Southern California
are harder to quantify. Where else can you
garden on a college campus in January with a
geology and environmental analysis professor; stargaze with three astronomy professors on a eld trip in Anza Borrego desert;
and create an app for a hackathon that representatives from Microsoft, Intuit, 10Gen,
Amazon, Yelp and Google will judge on-site?

organize activities and events for the students who live there. The

at all levels of fluency to converse informally in 35 languages. Oldenborg
also sponsors a wide variety of international and intercultural activities
including a guest speaker series and international lm screenings.
Pomona oers international students a supportive environment in
a community aware of many cultures and political systems around the
