FROM THE PULPIT
“Now the green blade riseth
from the buried grain.
Wheat that in dark earth
many days has lain.
When our hearts are wintry
grieving or in pain.
Thy touch can call
us back to life again.”
This Easter hymn from The Hymnal, 1982 seems to say it all this year. Here in the Midwest United States(as in
other parts of the country) it has been an unusual winter. We have had ice storms, blizzards, warm weather, mud,
sun, fog, wind, water, lightning, thunderstorms, and whatever else you can think of. I have heard so many people
comment that they cannot wait until spring comes this year.
Lent and Easter are a lot like that. Lent is a solemn time of sober self- examination of soul and of conscience and
of habits. Just like the ice trimmed out the dead parts of the trees, a journey to the cross can rid our lives of dark
excesses and dead accumulations. Seeing the Savior on the cross can clear our foggy minds and help us focus in a
world of extreme distractions.
I can’t wait until Spring.
I can’t wait until Easter.
And then it happens…the weather and winds gets gradually warmer.
The flowers begin to pop through the ground.
The sun shines longer each day.
“Love is come again like wheat arising green.”
It will be good to journey through winter into spring and summer this year. For many reasons. It will be good to
near the end of the 40 day journey to the cross and stand at the empty tomb. For many reasons. Easter reminds us
that because Jesus rose again from the dark grave, we too will experience the freshness of eternal life. Let our
prayer be…Bring us back to life again!
