I almost revere Dr. Dawkins. He is a brilliant scientist and who has made important
contributions to our times. However, I don't find anything too 'unreasonable' about what Satish
says. He makes some very good points and clearly states that he is NOT sure, but that is how
he understands the nature of things. You can't talk to a philosopher and expect him to talk in
scientific terms. That is not what philosophers do.

+Zinyak eastern definition of philosophy is different from west's definition. In the east, it
is required to have embodied experience along with the knowledge but in the west it is
not the case. What west did (since 16th century) was to copy hindu/vedic high
philosophies (aka laws of nature) and called it laws of motion, gravitation, planetary
motion and quantum theories and just tried to validate it mathematically. Greeks from
pythagoras to plato also studied in the hindu civilization or India and copied hindu/vedic
math,more
philosophies and astronomy and took them to Europe. On the dumb head of

Scientists (or other intellectual types) should understand that spirituality and religion are just
poetic metaphors laypeople use to describe their experience and understanding of life and the
world they live in. This is in the same way scientists use mathematics. All languages, no
matter how strictly defined, are still just metaphors for the actual underlying 'THING'. For
example numbers, functions, equations, etc are not the THING, they are just sounds we use to
portray the idea of the thing. :)

I don't actually think that's true. As you can see in this interview, spirituality wasn't
described as a metaphor. It was described as an integrated part of reality, not a poetic
description of our experience as humans toward the reality. Spirituality is exactly as you
say, a poetic metaphor specific to an individuals culture.

kind of a silly debate...there is no contradiction here. Just a philosopher and a biologist
saying the same thing via the context of their professions...Very different backgrounds.

Agreed, the issue is Satish seems to have a lack of vocabulary, and is combining many
different aspects into only 2 categories. Which can make it a little hard to understand.
Especially with the word spiritual.

I think that is because this guy speaks about things that you dont see but you feel them
Dawkins doesnt agree with that,he needs proof :)

One of the more interesting conversations I've seen in a while.
There was a point where they clearly disagreed - on the holistic vs analytic views. Satish
argues that one cannot truly understand the nature of something by dividing it into parts and
studying them separately, because the relationships between the parts are not a hierarchy but
rather a network. This is in stark contrast to the way science is done, where knowledge is
encapsulated into theories about particular phenomena.

The discussion in the video is reminiscent of the book Intimacy or Integrity: Philosophy and
Cultural Difference by Thomas Kasulis. The book details a theory about a major difference
between a generalized European philosophical approach and a generalized South and East
Asian philosophical approach, mainly that, historically, Eastern philosophy can be
characterized by interconnectivity and relation while, historically, Western philosophy can be
characterized by coherence and integrity of units or subjects. Obviously it's a bit of an
oversimplification,
but the book does a good job of probing into the major divide in how

I'm an atheist but I agree n understand what Satish Kumar was saying. Due to the lack
scientific terminology/knowledge he couldn't explain/express very clearly what he meant by
spirit n wholistic. The word spirit according to him means unseen quality of something which
we can understand by comparing it with something we consider similar or made up of same
material for example a rock compared to another rock and not just look at one and conclude
you know everything. Similarly, all human beings have compassion, kindness, empathy etc.
but
same in everyone. And Dawkins was trying to tie everything with the same thread

Dawkins says that he wants to dissect the tree to find out exactly how it works. What is his
view towards an animal or a human, does he want to dissect them too to find out how they
work or make experiments on them? What if someone decides that he wants to find out why
does Dawkins functions this way and not another? Can that someone make the same thing
like Dawkins and dissect him alive or submit him to experiments? I am just wondering... Or
only he is allowed to do the dissecting?

Hats off Satish Kumar Garu, Your view of the universe is truly wise and all-knowing, let go the
'selfish genes'. It needs a lot of broad and open mindedness to understand what Satish garu is
saying. Am not againstRichard Dawkins, I WASa huge fan of his when I was younger. I read
his scientific books and even the 'reason-lores', back then I was a head strong atheist as I was
young and so I didn't happen to have the whole view of the 'wholeverse' but as I grew up and
accumulated and analysed much more knowledge from very many sources (not only
scientific)

Could not Satish Kumar use the word consciousness as Osho has used? It seems to be a
better word that can be less misunderstood. Very nice inquiry. I like the interview very much.
Satish Kumar is trying to explain something that can only be experiencedand understood. And
that can only come with an open heart and mind. Science may never be able to explain
consciousness or spirituality as Satish Kumar says it,because it has to be understood
individually.

The most most mind stimulating dialogue I have heard in years. I am in complete
understanding of Dawkins persistent assertion to use terms almost literally or as expressed in
western universalism. It is very difficult to understand the train of thought as propagated by
Satish Kumar through the medium of the English Language in which definitions of certain
terms like 'spiritual', 'metaphysical' etc. are used with reference to western interpretations of
the term or the usage of these terms in religious discourse such as the Bible. Though Dawkins
mightmore
not subscribe to religious faith, he understands the context of the usage of these words

I understand you and agree with you to great lenghts (I love people like Dawkins, they
really try to keep objectivity pure and shake belief systems, I applaude that). The thing is
that everything is observed by a "subjective" observer and sometimes seems to me that
science puts the necessary observer out of the equation. Objectivity is only possible
through the subjective (if this makes any sense to you...). My point is, until you have a
true compreension of "what" is doing the observation you cannot define the
objective/material
as the primary/only reality.
Reply
Mark MacKinnon 3 months ago
+P santosso, perfect objectivity is impossible. Okay. So perfect knowledge is
impossible. Sure.
But you must agree that that in no way means that we should cease our efforts to know
more and to work to eliminate our perceptual biases as we realize them.
