Jedi Journals! I'm assistant
editor Dave Land, and I'll be
your host for the next few
issues. I just want to take a
second to thank editor Bob
Cooper for giving me the
chance to lead this discussion.
I'm looking forward to hearing
from all of you Jedi fans.
Hopefully, together we'll be
able to stir up some decent
conversation regarding The
Golden Age of the Sith, the Star
Wars series, and life in general.
The Jedi Journals mailbag
has been a little vacant
recently, but I did manage to
find a few letters from diligent
Golden Age readers. Let's take
alook...

Ijust got myself a copy of The
Golden Age of the Sith #0 this
morning, I must say, it’s not
what I'd hoped. The story of the
Sith on the first two pages was
confusing, and I don’t
understand the significance of
Gav & Jori Daragon. The
sketches at the end (the best
part, in my opinion) gave me the
impression that Gav is a Jedi.
Master Ooroo was cool.
What kind of creature is he,
and why is he in that crystal
thing? [He comes from a wise
and ancient race, and that
thing is his house] I thought
the Koros system could have
been done better, even though
it is good to see it without
Krath influences. Aarrba the
Hutt is just another ina long
string of Hutts, with one
difference: he’s not evil. In fact
he may be the first good Hutt
we've ever met in Star Wars.

[What about the beautiful
Anachro from Boba Fett:
Bounty on Bar-Kooda and Boba
Fett: When the Fat Lady Swings?|
I didn’t like Memit Nadill.
He looked too much like some
Kind of stupid-looking demon.
‘The explanation of the
principles of battle meditation
was very nice, and I liked
Memiit’s lightsaber.
Now, on to the sketch
liked Gav Daragon as a Jedi,
with the lightsaber with a hip-
mounted battery pack. I thought
they would have needed
something like that back when
lightsabers first came about (I
have been tossing around some
ideas for a fan-faction story
about the first Jedi and a
backpack generator for the
lightsaber was one of my
concepts), and I also liked the
exposed jewel. These lightsabers
look even neater than the Sith
War sabers. Most of the
characters are complete
mysteries, like Ssk Kahorr,
‘Tk'lokk, Tuknatan, Sonam-Ha‘ar
(wow, does he look stupid!), and
Simus. I didn’t like Odan-Urr's
clothes in the story, but what
he's wearing on the cover and in
the sketches is awesome!
The Massassi Warrior looks
like a more evolved Massassi,
which is bad, but the Crystal
Ax is a nice touch. Naga
Sadow’s Mothership looks
pretty dumb, although it will
be nice to see him again. Will
we be seeing Freedon Nadd at
any time during this series? Are
there plans to continue this
series in another title after it’s
over, like you did with the Sith
War chronicles?
I
Jenner, I'm glad you liked
Dario’s sketches. He’s done a
great job, and we get to enjoy
him for the rest of this series!
He did a nice job on all the
character designs. I
particularly like the way he
‘was able to take a fantastic
piece of Jeditechnology like |
the lightsaber and make it
Jook rustic.
There is one thing about
Jenner’s letter that I want to
point out to future Jedi
Journals writers. I’ve got no
problem running letters that
are critical of the hard work
we do here, but if you're going
to slam something, please, I
beg you, back up your
statement. Anyone can write
in and say “Naga Sadow
sucks!” What I want to know
is why you think he sucks.
Capice? On to the next letter. ..

Vincent Money

Dear Jedi Journals,
With a steady and confident
hand, I pen my first letter ever
to a comic-book letters column.
Never before had I felt the need
to clarify my feelings
concerning any single book ...
until now, [have been meaning
to write to Tales of the Jedi for
quite some time, and I have
finally decided to, hot off
reading Golden Age of the Sith #0.
Thave mixed feelings about this
book. I enjoyed the nutshell
introduction of the various
characters, packing quite a bit of
action and insight into a mere
twelve pages. I find it strange
that Star Wars can accomplish in
a twelve-page intro book what it
takes other comics one or more
issues to do (Prepare to go, Solo!
— yeah, whatever). The art for
the book had a very relaxing
and stylistic approach to it,
reminiscent of Tatsuya
Ishida’s work on the current
Gl Joe series you guys are
doing. It is so nice to have
such simple, yet effective,
artwork that doesn’t give you
a headache to look at. Kudos,
Chris Gossett! And the cover .
. is Chris Moeller a God? It
was beautiful. If I didn’t make
$3.25 an hour at a sweatshop,
I'd try and purchase a piece of
his work.
Believe it or not, lam not
some cheesy, lifeless fanboy or
Star Wars geek who writes in
every month to discuss
differences between the CD-
Rom Star Wars stuff and the
comic books. I just focus
mostly on the work you guys
in Oregon are doing, a few of
the novels, and of course the
movies. With this in mind, I
ask a simple question: #0 takes
place 5,000 years before the
birth of Luke Skywalker — yet
the technology in Star Wars: A
New Hope does not appear to
have advanced much since
GAOTS. Why is that? Could it
be that the Star Wars universe
experiences some form of
Dark Ages akin to the one that
afflicted Europe in the middle
of the current millennia?
I must admit, however, I
was rather disappointed in the
gimmick deal surrounding #0
issues (Image has made it
infamous). I think that it’s a
great idea to put out a small
introduction before the release
of the series, but it’s just so...
tacky. I mean, slapping
together a 12-page comic
[Vincent, my friend, if you
only knew. .. ] and selling it
for $.99 has nothing but
money and cheap,
promotional bait written all
over it. For shame! Granted, it
worked on me, but that’s still
no excuse. Dark Horse,
Lucasfilm, everyone involved
is better than that,
Otherwise, keep up the
fantastic work. I can’t wait for
the revamped Star Wars
rerelease this winter — I'll be
the first in line!
Vincent, thanks for your
engaging letter. I'm glad you
enjoyed Golden Age #0
despite the fact that you feel
it was merely a promotional
ploy. I thought it worked
rather well as a prequel to the
series. It set up the story of
Gav and Jori being alone and
facing an uncertain future —
we've all been there, haven‘t
we? Hopefully, it connected
you to them enough that
you'll want to hang around
and see how their future
turns out.
Your question about
technology not advancing
much in 5,000 years is a good
one. You've got to remember
that there have been some
advances like the lightsabers
becoming more compact and
starship pilots no longer
having to rely on beacons to
mark hyperspace jump
points. These are just two of
many technical advances that
were made. You also should
remember that there was a lot
of activity getting in the way
of scientific progress during
those 5,000 years, such as the
Clone Wars. It's kind of hard
to come up with a better
hyperdrive when someone is
waving a lightsaber in your
face. Know what I mean?

Dear Jedi Journals,
After experiencing the Tales
of the Jedi saga, | finally
decided to write you guys. All
Tcan say is wow. Give my
regards to the staff at Dark
Horse. [Thanks, Tyler!]
I'd like to see Dario
Carrasco back for the next
series. I met him at a comics
convention, and he is a great
guy. I'm looking forward to
the new series The Golden Age
of the Sith. [I hope you've
liked it so far.]
‘Are you going to do more
stories after this series? [You
can look forward to The Fall
of the Sith Empire early next
year!] If you do, wouldn't it
be great to see a story of a
female Dark Lord of the Sith?
[Hmmm. . .] Not along the
lines of Aleema, but a sterner
character who wants to bring
the galaxy to its knees. I know
it sounds familiar, but I'm
sure you guys can think of a
great plot.
‘And the one question I’m
sure you guys are asked a lot,
Why don’t you make Tales of
the Jedi into one of those
Japanimation videos? I know
I'd buy it.
Thanks for your time.
Tyler, the main reason we
don’t do a Japanimation
video is because we aren't in
Japan, and we don’t do
animation. Sorry. Although I
do agree, an animated Jedi
story would be cool if it was
done right.
Seve
Well that’s all for now!
Hope you all enjoyed this

e-mails!
