St Raphael appears to us in the book of Tobit. In the seventh century B.C. A Jewish family had
been exiled to Nineveh by the Assyrians. The fathers name was Tobit. Tobit was a pious man who
would secretly bury the Jewish dead even if the King of Nineveh had decreed that their bodies were
to rot in the street. One day, his eyes became infected and he went blind. Years later, when his son
Tobiah had grown up he decided to send him to his cousin in another town to obtain some money.
Tobiah was unwilling to go alone but a stranger, Raphael, volunteered to travel with him. The
relative to whom Tobiah was traveling had a daughter, Sarah, who was afflicted with a terrible curse.
Whenever she married, her husband died on their wedding night. Naturally, no one wanted to
marry her so she seemed destined to remain without a husband for life. She prayed to God that he
would either free her from her curse or allow her to die. Raphael told Tobiah that God wanted him
to marry Sarah but that he had to pray and perform a special sacrifice and gave him specific
instructions as to what he should do. The relative was glad to allow Tobiah to marry Sarah but
warned him of the curse. Tobiah trusted Raphael and performed the prayer and the sacrifice and
the curse was lifted. He and Sarah were alive the next morning. When they returned to Nineveh,
Raphael instructed Tobiah on how to cure his fathers blindness. After this he revealed himself to be
an angel and returned to Heaven. Tobit lived to a happy old age able to see and Tobiah and Sarah
had many children and lived a joyful married life. Because of his ability to bring healing Raphael
has always been seen as the archangel of healing.
Gabriel of course was the angel who brought the message of the births of John the
Baptist and Jesus to Zechariah and Mary respectively. He had also assisted the prophet
Daniel in the book of Daniel. Gabriels name means mighty warrior of God.

ST. MICHAEL FALL BAZAAR
Two weeks ago I wrote a column introducing angels. I would like here to further explore this
fascinating topic. There are in fact a vast number of angels (most likely trillions upon trillions) but by
Gods wisdom and choice only the names of three of them have come down to us through sacred
scripture. Every angel has a name of course but these three are the only ones God has revealed.
They are Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. Each one merits its own description. St Michael is the
most known of all the angels. His name means Who Is Like God!? as this was the question of
challenge that he gave to Lucifer when Lucifer attempted to make himself god. St Michael led the
battle against Lucifer, defeated him and his angels and cast them out of heaven. Ever since then
Michael has been the Prince of the Heavenly Host, the supreme leader of the angels (second to God
of course). He has led the angelic forces against the powers of darkness from the beginning of time
to today. St Michael was without doubt behind the abolishment of slavery in the 19th century, the
defeat of Nazi Germany, and the fall of the Communist Empire. Pope St Leo XIII after seeing a
vision wrote the famous St Michael prayer. Let us continue to invoke his aid every day.

On August 6, 1978, 80 year old Pope Paul VI died of a heart
attack after serving 15 years as the Holy Father. The College
of Cardinals met later that month and on August 26, selected
Albino Luciani, the humble and devout Cardinal of Venice, as
the new Pope. He took the name, John Paul I, in honor of his
two predecessors, John 23rd and Paul 6th. He was 65 years old,
but in frail health. Because he would be Pope only 34 days,
history calls him the September Pope. In his brief reign, his
warmth and good humor endeared him to millions. On the
morning of September 28, 1978, his body was discovered by
his private secretary. His bed light was still on and the book,
The Imitation of Christ was open on the nightstand. He
had a strong devotion to the Mother of God. On Monday,
Sept. 28, the Church observed the 37th year of his entrance
into Heaven. The 3rd Pope for 1978, John Paul II began his 26
year reign in October of 78, concluding a momentous year
for the Church.
