Description: A unit of Reference Material (RM) 8040 consists of one bottle containing approximately 60 g of
crystalline sodium oxalate.
Substance: Sodium oxalate.
Other Designations: Sodium oxalate (disodium salt; disodium oxalate; ethanedioic acid).

2. HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION
NFPA Ratings (Scale 04):

Health = 2

Fire = 1

Reactivity = 0

Physical Hazards: None listed

Major Health Hazards: Sodium oxalate is classed as an irritant.
Potential Health Effects:
Inhalation: Short term (acute) exposure to dust may result in severe irritation or burns to the respiratory tract.
Long term (chronic) exposure may result in chronic irritation of the respiratory tract. Renal impairment may
also occur.
Skin Contact: Skin contact with dry material may result in irritation. Contact with oxalate solutions may result
in severe symptoms due to absorption resulting in hypocalcemia and renal impairment. Prolonged exposure to
oxalate solutions may result in gangrene due to localized absorption of oxalic acid.
Eye Contact: Direct contact may result in severe irritation and corneal damage. Effects depend on the
concentration and duration of exposure.
Ingestion: Ingestion of concentrated sodium oxalate may result in severe irritation of the gastrointestinal tract
with abdominal pain and tenderness, nausea and vomiting, and kidney failure. Ingestion of large amounts of
dilute solution may only result in moderate digestive upsets, but may still result in renal failure.
Listed as a Carcinogen/Potential Carcinogen:
Yes
In the National Toxicology Program (NTP) Report on Carcinogens
In the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) Monographs
