Postgres
is
rapidly
becoming
the
preferred
open

enterprises,
governments,
ISVs
and
OEMs.
Many
companies
are
switching
from
well-known
brand-name
closed-source
database
solutions
to
Postgres.
To
meet
our
enterprise
customer
needs,
EDB
has
developed
Postgres

Services
require
a
more
detailed

the
customers
needs.
After
a
quick

2.1 ARCHITECTURAL
HEALTH
CHECK
2.1.1 DESCRIPTION
The
Architectural
Health
Check
(AHC)
is
a
detailed
review
of
the
customers
Postgres
database
environment.
Multiple
Postgres
instances
will
require
multiple
AHCs1;
The
AHC
produces
a
set
of
specific
and
actionable
high
impact
recommendations
that
the
customer
can
implement
to
ensure
that
the
system
is
optimally
configured
and
tuned.
Some
recommendations
can
be
implemented
within
a
short
timeframe;
others
are
strategic
suggestions
that
may
take
longer
to
realize
The
AHC
is
based
on
years
of
Postgres
experience
in
high
performance
and
high
availability
environments.
The
AHC
focuses
on
the
following
aspects:
Technical
Infrastructure
(OS,
hardware,
and
database)
Indexes
and
tables
Tuning
parameters
at
the
OS
level
and
the
database
level
(memory,
WAL,
background
workers,
logging,
checkpoint,
auto
vacuum,
etc.)
Disaster
recovery
planning
(backups,
high
availability,
replication,
etc.)
Best
practices
(table
spaces,
maintenance,
partitioning,
indexing,
etc.)
The
AHC
is
a
highly
interactive
process
that
takes
approximately
40
hours,
2/3
of
that
time
is
being
spent
reviewing
the
customers
Postgres
infrastructure.
The
remaining
time
is
focused
on
analyzing
the
data,
and
on
the
development
and
documentation
of
the
AHC
recommendations.
An
EDB-internal
peer
review
is
conducted
prior
to
the
delivery
of
the
final
recommendation
2.1.2 DELIVERABLES
The
AHC
produces
a
detailed
report
covering
the
analysis
and
the
recommendations
(see
Figure

for
a
sample
section).
While
a
consultant
may
make
minor
changes
to
a
running
system
for
debugging
or
deriving
tuning
information,
actual
implementation
of
AHC
recommendations
should
be
essayed
stepwise,
with
testing
in
between
changes,
and
cannot
be
implemented
during
the

process.

2.1.3 SUCCESS
FACTORS
The
AHC
is
an
interactive
process.
The
EDB
consultant
needs
access
to
the
customers
DBA
team
and
the
business
owner
of
the
application
for
discussions,
questions
and
answers.
The
EDB
Consultant
will
also
run
custom
developed
and
proprietary
scripts
on
the
production
system
to
collect
performance
data,
identify
performance
problems
and
develop
recommendations.
Tuning
analysis
is
most
accurate
when
the
system
can
be
observed
under
production
loads
or
accurately
simulated
production
loads,
with
the
expected
hardware
profile
in
place.
For
some
investigation,
administrator
access
is
required.
Depending
on
the
initial
findings,
the
EDB
consultant
will
also
need
access
to
the
IT
architecture
team,
the
IT
Networking
Team
and
the
Application
Design
Team
to
develop
a
complete
set
of
recommendations.
AHCs
focus
on
systems
that
are
currently
in
production.
Customers
who
need
performance
evaluations
and
architectural
reviews
for
pre-production
systems
should
consider
a
custom
consulting
engagement.
The
standard
AHC
does
not
include
an
evaluation
of
third
party
software
for
replication,
load
balancing,
failover,
or
disaster
recovery.
If
such
tools
or
products
need
to
be
considered
then
our
sales
team
will
engage
with
the
customer
to
develop
a
custom
project.
2.1.4 ONSITE
DELIVERY
For
onsite
delivery
of
the
AHC,
the
EDB
consultant
needs
access
to
the
production
environment.
The
EDB
consultant
will
be
onsite
for
three
consecutive
days.
The
remaining
time
will
be
used
to
develop
the
recommendations,
peer
review
and
delivery
of
the
recommendations
to
the
customer.
2.1.5 REMOTE
DELIVERY
For
remote
delivery
of
DBA
Services,
the
EDB
consultant
needs
SSH
access
either
directly
or
via
VPN
to
the
production
environment.
The
remote
access
has
to
be
in
place
prior
to
the
start
of
the
project.
Delays
in
the
remote
access
will
impact
the
cost
of
the
project.

3.9 POSTGRES
DATABASE
RECOVERY
Database
Recovery
projects
help
customers
in
the
rare
circumstance
where
a
Postgres
database
has
become
corrupt.
This
can
be
due
to
a
corruption
of
the

an
intrusion,
a
file
system
corruption
or
a
faulty
backup.
EDB
has
significant
experience
in

all,
of
the
data.
3.10 POSTGRES

complexity,
such
a
project
can
be
very
short
(in
the
order
of
days)
or
much
more
involved
(several
weeks),
requiring
significant

in

It
does
not
include

and
EDB

customer

directly.

Additional

Regular

5.1.4 EXCLUSIONS
AND
CUSTOM
RDBA
SOLUTIONS
The
Premium,
Basic,
and
Monitoring
levels
of
our
RemoteDBA
service
are
designed
around
the
most
common
needs
of
our
customers.
We
offer
additional
solutions
for
DBA
Services
and
Consulting
services
for
more
individual
needs.
The
3
standard
tiers
or
RemoteDBA
Service
do
not
include
the
following,
which
extend
beyond
the
day-to-day
activities
listed
under
RDBA
SLA.
5.1.4.1 Remote
DBA
Exclusions
New
code
development:
Any
new
PL/SQL
code
re-writing
or
scripting
to
enhance
customer
application
performance
or
to
introduce
new
feature
or
any
amendments
to
any
existing
scripts,
would
not
be
carried
out
by
the
RDBA
Team.
However,
the
RDBA
will
help
deploying
any
such
scripts,
if
provided
by
the
customer.
Major
re-designs
or
re-configurations
of
the
database:
Some
example
could
be:
If
the
customer
is
deploying
major
hardware/software
changes,
which
requires
the
RDBA
team
to
setup
a
complete
new
environment
and
requires
dedicated
support
from
the
RDBA
team
to
complete
the
assigned
activities,
then
such
activities
cannot
be
carried
out
under
RemoteDBA
support.
Operating
System
Maintenance,
Hyper
Visor
Management,
VM
Management
and
Container
Management,
except
as
it
directly
pertains
to
the
database.
Query
redesign
and
rewriting.
The
query
tuning
provided
by
the
RemoteDBA
team
extends
to
the
identification
of
problem
queries
in
the
customers
application/database
combination.
If
issues
with
the
query
can
be
resolved
or
improved
through
the
creation
of
modification
of
indexes,
changes
to
server
configuration
(work_mem
for
example)
or
the
improvement
of
statistics
gathering,
these
can
be
suggested/implemented.
Where
a
query
needs
to
be
rewritten,
the
team
can
point
out
problems
areas
in
an
explain/analyze
plan,
but
cannot
own
rewriting
the
query
directly.
5.1.5 ADDITIONAL

5.2.2 REMOTE
DELIVERY
For
remote
delivery
of
DBA
Services,
the
EDB
consultant
needs
SSH

either

via

to

The
remote

has
to

prior
to
