ENTERPRISEDB GLOBAL SERVICES CATALOGUE

1 INTRODUCTION
EnterpriseDB (EDB) is the leading worldwide provider of Postgres software and services that
enable enterprises to reduce their reliance on costly proprietary solutions and slash their
database spend by 80% or more. With powerful performance and security enhancements for
Postgres, sophisticated management tools for global deployments and Oracle compatibility,
EnterpriseDB software supports both mission and non-mission critical enterprise applications.
More than 2,000 enterprises, governments and other organizations worldwide use EnterpriseDB
software, support, training and professional services to integrate open source software into
their existing data infrastructures.
Postgres is a powerful, open source object-relational database system with a strong reputation
for reliability, data integrity, and stability. Postgres is rapidly becoming the preferred open
source relational database for enterprises, governments, ISVs and OEMs. Many companies are
switching from well-known brand-name closed-source database solutions to Postgres.
To meet our enterprise customer needs, EDB has developed Postgres Plus Advanced Server
(PPAS) which integrates and extends PostgreSQL with advanced performance features,
additional security, enterprise-class tools and Oracle compatibility enabling organizations to
dramatically reduce their costs by utilizing open source based products effectively in their IT
infrastructures. PPAS and PostgreSQL are complemented by a set of tools for replication (xDB),
failover management (EFM) and enterprise management (PEM).
EDB has developed a comprehensive collection of services offerings to help our customers get
the maximum value from their EDB product subscriptions.
The services fall into several categories
1. Packaged Consulting Services
2. Custom Consulting Services
3. Technical Account Management Services
4. Deployment Services
5. DBA Services
Packaged Services are highly standardized and are offered through the EDB sales organization or
through qualified partners. Most of the time they do not require a separate statement of work
(SOW).
Custom Consulting Services require a more detailed understanding of the customers needs.
After a quick and focused needs assessment, the EDB Professional Services team, in close
collaboration with our sales organization, delivers a tailored SOW to the customer.
Technical Account Management (TAM) services provide the customer a named trusted advisor
to ensure successful Postgres implementations.
DBA Services focus on helping customers operate existing Postgres production implementations.
Depending on the customers needs, the services described above can be delivered by onsite
consultants or by remote teams.

2 PACKAGED SERVICES
2.1 ARCHITECTURAL HEALTH CHECK
2.1.1 DESCRIPTION
The Architectural Health Check (AHC) is a detailed review of the customers Postgres database
environment. Multiple Postgres instances will require multiple AHCs1; The AHC produces a set of
specific and actionable high impact recommendations that the customer can implement to
ensure that the system is optimally configured and tuned. Some recommendations can be
implemented within a short timeframe; others are strategic suggestions that may take longer to
realize
The AHC is based on years of Postgres experience in high performance and high availability
environments.
The AHC focuses on the following aspects:

Technical Infrastructure (OS, hardware, and database)

Indexes and tables

Tuning parameters at the OS level and the database level (memory, WAL, background
workers, logging, checkpoint, auto vacuum, etc.)

Disaster recovery planning (backups, high availability, replication, etc.)

Best practices (table spaces, maintenance, partitioning, indexing, etc.)

The AHC is a highly interactive process that takes approximately 40 hours, 2/3 of that time is
being spent reviewing the customers Postgres infrastructure. The remaining time is focused on
analyzing the data, and on the development and documentation of the AHC recommendations.
An EDB-internal peer review is conducted prior to the delivery of the final recommendation

2.1.2 DELIVERABLES
The AHC produces a detailed report covering the analysis and the recommendations (see Figure
1 for a sample section).
While a consultant may make minor changes to a running system for debugging or deriving
tuning information, actual implementation of AHC recommendations should be essayed
stepwise, with testing in between changes, and cannot be implemented during the AHC process.

Read-only Replicas or Disaster Recovery Replicas do not require a separate AHC.

2.1.3 SUCCESS FACTORS

The AHC is an interactive process. The EDB consultant needs access to the customers DBA team
and the business owner of the application for discussions, questions and answers. The EDB
Consultant will also run custom developed and proprietary scripts on the production system to
collect performance data, identify performance problems and develop recommendations.
Tuning analysis is most accurate when the system can be observed under production loads or
accurately simulated production loads, with the expected hardware profile in place.
For some investigation, administrator access is required.
Depending on the initial findings, the EDB consultant will also need access to the IT architecture
team, the IT Networking Team and the Application Design Team to develop a complete set of
recommendations.
AHCs focus on systems that are currently in production. Customers who need performance
evaluations and architectural reviews for pre-production systems should consider a custom
consulting engagement.
The standard AHC does not include an evaluation of third party software for replication, load
balancing, failover, or disaster recovery. If such tools or products need to be considered then
our sales team will engage with the customer to develop a custom project.

2.1.4 ONSITE DELIVERY

For onsite delivery of the AHC, the EDB consultant needs access to the production environment.
The EDB consultant will be onsite for three consecutive days. The remaining time will be used to
develop the recommendations, peer review and delivery of the recommendations to the
customer.

2.1.5 REMOTE DELIVERY

For remote delivery of DBA Services, the EDB consultant needs SSH access either directly or via
VPN to the production environment. The remote access has to be in place prior to the start of
the project. Delays in the remote access will impact the cost of the project.

2.3 DATABASE MIGRATION ASSESSMENT

2.3.1 DESCRIPTION
The Database Migration Assessment (DMA) is a highly proven and very systematic assessment of
an Oracle database to identify the effort necessary to migrate it to the latest release of Postgres
Plus Advanced Server (PPAS).
A DMA proceeds as follows:

Discovery
o

Select initial database(s) to assess - identify the best candidate database(s) for
initial migration targets based on technical features used, goals and
requirements, use case, and your identified database inventory. This is often
done during the pre-sales stage with the customer.

The Database Migration Assessment Tool (DMAT) is executed against the

customer schema, and results in an in initial understanding of the relative
compatibility between the customer schema and the Oracle features supported
by Postgres Plus Advanced Server (PPAS).

Using the DMAT, EDB performs a syntactical analysis of the schema to identify
any objects that may not be supported in PPAS. The objects evaluated include
Database Links, Functions, Indexes, Procedures, Sequences, Tables, Views and
Triggers.

In addition to use of the DMAT, the consultant looks for other known issues that
may not be discovered by the automated tool.

Gather details about the customer applications that access the schema to be
ported to PPAS.

Review and Plan

o

Produce and analyze the findings in the report generated from the Database
Migration Assessment Tool.

For each object that will not migrate automatically, EDB identifies if there is a
known solution in the EDB library currently a collection of over 70 proven
scripts, tools and practices.

EDB and customer discuss issues that cannot easily be revealed by automated
analysis to explore usage and potential alternatives.

Gather details about performance, uptime requirements, functional regression,

migration constraints, schedule.

Finalized Results and Plan - EDB documents the DMA findings and reviews a
proposed migration approach with the customer.

documented workarounds. These are established solutions that can apply to the
customers non-migratable objects.

A summary of the objects that require further detailed analysis to explore the
use case and viable alternatives.

Conclusions, recommendations, and next steps.

2.3.3 ONSITE DELIVERY

DMAs are most often executed remotely. We will create a custom consulting engagement for
customers requiring an onsite migration assessment.

2.3.4 REMOTE DELIVERY

Default pricing for RemoteDBA services are based on a 4 x 4 server environment, but we
adjust according to your particular needs and size of the environment to be managed.
(2)
To leverage PEM for the monitoring, the customer must provide a separate server to house
the PEM server and its database.
(3)
For backup verification the customer has to provide a separate server that can be used to
verify the integrity of the backups.
(4)
Query tuning is limited to identification of problem queries in the customers
application/database combination. It does not include query redesign or query redevelopment,
and EDB will not rewrite customer queries directly.
(A) Additional services can be purchased to enhance the Monitoring and the Basic Level Service.

5.1.1 24X7 MONITORING-ONLY SERVICE

The 24x7 Monitoring level of service provides you with a fundamental monitoring set up that no
database system should be without. Then we monitor your database in real time 24x7 and
notify your staff when any critical events occur that threaten your systems operations. Regular
status reports keep you apprised of the ongoing health of your database.

5.1.2 BASIC RDBA SERVICE

Basic RDBA subscribers get the added services of keeping your software up to date and patched,
database technical support, escalated issue management, backup verification and an
Architectural Health Check that reviews critical characteristics of your database for best
practices.
The Basic RDBA Service includes a one-time Architectural Health Check, which will be executed
remotely (see Section 2.1).

5.1.3 PREMIUM RDBA SERVICE

Premium RDBA subscribers get an assigned on-shore Technical lead, who, on top of the other
services, leads the team in capacity planning, setups for point-in-time-recovery, replication,
dev/test environments, users and security. Your Remote DBA team will tune queries, partition

tables and offer advice in many other areas for total worry free care of your database
infrastructure.

The Premium RDBA Service also includes an annual Architectural Health Check, which will be
executed remotely (see Section 2.1).

5.1.4 EXCLUSIONS AND CUSTOM RDBA SOLUTIONS

The Premium, Basic, and Monitoring levels of our RemoteDBA service are designed around the
most common needs of our customers. We offer additional solutions for DBA Services and
Consulting services for more individual needs. The 3 standard tiers or RemoteDBA Service do
not include the following, which extend beyond the day-to-day activities listed under RDBA SLA.

5.1.4.1 Remote DBA Exclusions

New code development: Any new PL/SQL code re-writing or scripting to enhance customer
application performance or to introduce new feature or any amendments to any existing
scripts, would not be carried out by the RDBA Team. However, the RDBA will help deploying
any such scripts, if provided by the customer.
Major re-designs or re-configurations of the database: Some example could be: If the
customer is deploying major hardware/software changes, which requires the RDBA team to
setup a complete new environment and requires dedicated support from the RDBA team to
complete the assigned activities, then such activities cannot be carried out under RemoteDBA
support.

Operating System Maintenance, Hyper Visor Management, VM Management and Container
Management, except as it directly pertains to the database.
Query redesign and rewriting. The query tuning provided by the RemoteDBA team extends
to the identification of problem queries in the customers application/database
combination. If issues with the query can be resolved or improved through the creation of
modification of indexes, changes to server configuration (work_mem for example) or the
improvement of statistics gathering, these can be suggested/implemented. Where a query
needs to be rewritten, the team can point out problems areas in an explain/analyze plan, but
cannot own rewriting the query directly.

5.1.5 ADDITIONAL DBA SOLUTIONS

EDB can provide DBA Solutions (onsite or remote) that use exclusively US resources or US
citizens to meet customers specific compliance requirements.

5.2 DEDICATED INFRASTRUCTURE DBA

Copyright EnterpriseDB Corporation. All Rights Reserved.

ENTERPRISEDB GLOBAL SERVICES CATALOGUE

EDB provides customers with Dedicated Infrastructure DBAs to help in the configuration and
deployment of pre-production Postgres infrastructure solutions covering all aspects of Postgres
and Postgres-related products delivered by EDB.
Dedicated Infrastructure DBAs are focused on the needs of a single customer, where they help
in the design, development, deployment, testing and maintenance of Postgres solutions.
Depending on the customer needs, Dedicated Infrastructure DBAs can be deployed at the
customer site or support the customer remotely during the customers business hours.

5.2.1 ONSITE DELIVERY

An EDB DBA joins the customers team onsite. Many customers prefer this approach as it
facilitates Postgres knowledge transfer to the customers team.

5.2.2 REMOTE DELIVERY

For remote delivery of DBA Services, the EDB consultant needs SSH access either directly or via
VPN to the production environment. The remote access has to be in place prior to the start of
the project. Delays in the remote access will impact the cost of the project.
