1st December 2015

1 December 2015
We are most definitely on the downhill stretch, but I have to say I find this to be a very exciting time of
the year with much to celebrate and get through before we break for the holidays.
The assembly this Thursday is possibly one of the most anticipated for the year when we recognise
those students who have endeavoured to achieve their personal best and those who have achieved
academic excellence. I know this is a very difficult choice for teachers as many students in the
school strive to achieve their best every day, however having seen the recipients of the awards I feel
the selections are indeed most deserved. Mrs Mills, each year, organises and coordinates this
assembly and on behalf of all I would like to extend our thanks and appreciation for her considerable
efforts to honour and acknowledge our hard-working students.
We are also rapidly approaching the day we say goodbye to our Year 6 students. The Year 6
graduation will be on the 15 December commencing at 9.00am in the school hall. A lot of work goes
in to organising the Graduation and I would like to thank the Year 6 teachers, Ms Hwang, Mrs
Murray, Ms Dodson, as well as Mr Swann for providing support.
NASHS Graduation: Two weeks ago I attended the Year 12 North Albany Senior High School and
Albany Secondary Education Support Centre Graduation. It was fabulous to see many students who
had attended Mount Lockyer represented in the awards and as leaders in the school. Three of the
four 2015 School Leaders were ex-Mount Lockyer students, Davida Whittaker (School Captain),
Amanda Kelly and Jessica Rouse.
Congratulations to Wade Millar, who also attended Mount Lockyer, for receiving the Tertiary
Entrance Pathway Dux award. Additionally the following students who attended MLPS were
recognised:
Travis Golding Work Place Learning; and 2015 Caltex Best all Rounder;
Wade Millar as well as dux; Stage 3 Mathematics; and Stage 3 Chemistry;
Amanda Kelly Certificate 11 Visual Arts & Contemporary Crafts; and Stage 1 English;
Cameron Stone Stage 2 Mathematics;
Erell Fuentebella Food Science and Technology; and Great Southern Institute of Technology
Vocational Education Training Award; and
Jasmine Rowlands Albany Secondary Education Support Centre Citizenship Award; and
Vocational Education and Training Award.
I felt extremely proud and privileged to witness these fine young people graduate from high school
with such distinction.
Interschool Sports Carnival: Congratulations to all those students who competed in the jumps and
throws last Tuesday and the track and field Interschool Athletics Carnival on Thursday. Our students
performed very well. At the end of the day both the Junior and Senior Squads finished third
overall. The Junior Squad came second in the Handicap (Most Improved) Shield and the Seniors
won theirs. A special mention and thanks to Mr Swann and Mrs Jasper for organising and
coordinating the senior and junior competitors. Further in the newsletter there is a list of medal
recipients.
WA Education Awards: Yesterday Cherylene Simpson, Dianne Williams and I attended the
Premiers WA Education Awards as we were one of four finalists in the WA Excellence for Aboriginal
Education Award. We were not the overall winners; the honour went to Looma Community School, a
most deserved win. We were extremely proud to be representing our school community, as finalist at
the awards we already felt like winners.
It has been brought to my attention that on the weekend people are coming onto school property and
taking out plants that have been freshly planted. Our gardeners do a magnificent job in creating a
beautiful environment, I am sure you would agree our grounds are truly magnificent. We do have
security cameras but would like people living nearby to be vigilant and if you observe anyone on
school grounds over the weekends or after school hours behaving suspiciously please notify the
police.
Maxine Augustson

LIBRARY NEWS
BOOKS
As we get towards the end of the year it is important that
all books are returned to the school library as soon as
possible. If you are unsure of outstanding books, please
contact our library officers.
LIBRARY BAGS
Every year I lend out over 100 library bags to children
and inevitably these find new home elsewhere. If you
have any spare bags at home that we could use next
year, they would be much appreciated.

INTERSCHOOL ATHLETICS RESULTS

On Tuesday 24th November members of the Senior
Interschool Squad competed in high jump, long jump,
triple jump, t-ball throws, turbo javelin and 800m. It hasn't
been confirmed but it is believed that Eh Ther Gue Paw in
Year Six set a new Association record for long and triple
jump, jumping 4.87m and 9.6m respectively. At the end
of the day the Senior Squad was third overall.
On Thursday 26th November both the Junior and Senior
Squads competed at the main carnival. There were some
great individual performances but special mention should
be made of the junior teams (circleball, junior leaderball,
flag race and thread the needle) and the senior relay
teams (4 x 100m). At the end of the day both the Junior
and Senior Squads finished third overall. The Junior
Squad came second in the Handicap (Most Improved)
Shield and the Seniors won theirs. This is a tremendous
result and one that hasn't been seen for many years.
Overall Senior Champion Students were Jordan Bobby in
Year Five , Kriccia Woods and Eh Ther Gue Paw, both in
Year Six. A fantastic all round performance by those
three.
Congratulations to all of the students involved and the
staff and parents who have worked hard to have our
squads so well prepared.
For those students who are interested, Mr Swann will be
organising a Running Session on Monday, Wednesday
and Friday mornings starting at 8:40am. It is optional and
only for those students who will take it seriously.

MANAGING STUDENT BEHAVIOUR

WHAT IS BULLYING?

The key to this approach is that the child is given a choice at each step to
follow directions or face increased consequences.
Students making GOOD CHOICES are acknowledged for their efforts.
For students making POOR CHOICES the following consequences
apply ~

Bullying is when a student or group

keep picking on another student. They
try to hurt them physically or
emotionally.
The
behaviour
is
deliberate and repeated.

STEP 1
Student refuses to follow directions.
Verbal warning.
STEP 2
Student still refuses to follow directionsIn-class consequence e.g. Time Out
STEP 3
Student still refuses to follow directionsOut-of-class consequence e.g. Buddy
Class.
STEP 4
Student still refuses to follow directionsRED CARD is sent to the office.
Parents will be requested to attend
school.

SUSPENSION
Students will be immediately
suspended for verbal abuse of
staff and/or violence towards
staff or students.

RE-ENTRY FOLLOWING
SUSPENSION
Students returning from
suspension must be
accompanied by an adult and
will attend the Intervention
Centre (Room 20) where an
Individual Behaviour
Management Plan will be
developed and implemented.

A fight or disagreement between

equal students is not bullying.
HOW TO STOP BULLYING

Tell an adult, it is not dobbing to

ask for help. Both victim and
those bullying will be counselled
and supported.
Do not be a by-stander; if you
witness bullying try to stop it or
report it.
IF YOU ARE BULLYING

Step 1: Warning
Step 2: In school isolation and
counselling at recess and lunch,
parents will be notified
Step 3:
